Anna Marie (Hamann) Miller (1890 - 1974)

Anna Marie Hamann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Hamann, was born Dec. 23, 1890 in Washington Township, Crawford County, where she grew to womanhood. Baptized in childhood, she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

She was married to Emil Miller and they had four children. They farmed in Goodrich Township until 1931 when they came to live in Denison. She had been in poor health the past year and after being hospitalized, went to reside with her husband at Eventide. Here she passed away on Friday afternoon, June 14 (1974).

Surviving are the husband, Emil Miller; four children, Mrs. Warren (Esther) Keller of Whittied, Calif., Vernon of LeMars, Mrs. Earl (Dorothy) Folk of Clearwater, Florida and Mrs. Bernie (Garnet) Jorgensen of Manilla, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, a brother, August Hamann of Council Bluffs and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Nehls and Mrs. Ida Harder of Denison. Her parents and a brother, Karl Hamann, preceded her in death.

Her funeral service was held at the Zion Lutheran Church on Monday afternoon, June 17, with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Robert Maschke served as organist and Henry Henningsen as soloist. Burial was at the Lutheran Cemetery.

Anna (Hoeck) Matzen (1888 - 1979)

Anna Matzen was born August 28, 1888, in Germany, the daughter of Hans and Dora Jessen Hoeck. She departed this life Friday evening, July 6, 1979, en route to the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove having attained the age of 90 years, 10 months and 8 days. Anna was raised in her native land and received her education there.

On May 12, 1911, Anna was united in marriage to Heinrich Matzen in Schleswig, Holstein, Germany and they made their home there. They were blessed with the birth of one daughter, Erna. Anna assisted her husband in their Seed and Nursery Business for forty years in Germany. After the First World War, they built their own Greenhouse and acquired land on which they grew their seeds. They carried on many experiments in which they developed many new varieties of vegetables and flowers.

Anna and her husband came to America in 1937 for a visit and the marriage of their daughter. On July 25, 1951, Anna and her husband came to the United States again and made their permanent home in Schleswig.

Heinrich died March 25, 1952. From that time on Anna made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Detlefsen. For the past three years Anna had resided at the Colonial Manor in Odebolt.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and several brothers and sisters. Anna is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Erna and Hans Detlefsen of Schleswig, two grandchildren, Guenter and Erike, five great-grandchildren, one brother, Johannes Hoeck and one sister, Minna Hansen both of Germany.

Funeral services were held at the Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, 1979, with the Rev. Gary Clark officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Mrs. Dorothy Norman as organist. Pallbearers included Astor Swenehart, Jeffrey Ragsdell, Harry Maxwell, Dan Pfannebecker, Ralph Pfannebecker, and Marvin Neubaum. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig.

Anna Johanna (Abbe) Miller (1892 - 1982)

Anna Johanna Miller was born on March 20, 1892 in Grant Township, Ida County, Iowa, the daughter of Theodore and Mary Tange Abbe. She died on Monday morning, November 8, 1982, at the Horn Memorial Hospital, Ida Grove, Iowa, at the age of 90.

Anna was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township. She spent her early years on a family farm. Anna received her formal education in the rural schools near her home. She was raised by her step mother, Mary Honz Abbe after her mother's death.

On March 5, 1913, Anna was united in marriage to Harry Miller at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township. Together they farmed in Ida County near Schleswig. In 1944 they retired from the farm and moved to Schleswig. After Mr. Miller's death in 1964, Anna continued to make Schleswig her home. Anna was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a member of its Ladies Aid where she held many offices. Later she became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Anna was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry and John and one in infancy.

Survivors include, two daughters, Dorothy, Mrs. Ben Korner of Schleswig, and Alvera, Mrs. Robert Laubengayer of Madison, Wisconsin. Also surviving are three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 11, 1982, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery at Grant Township. The Rev. Paul Wiegert officiated at the services. Music for the services was provided by Mrs. Leroy Hight organist with the Immanuel Ladies Choir singing "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "I'm But a Stranger Here". The congregation sang "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Pallbearers included Gene Laubengayer, Wayne Korner, Alvin Stockfleth, Ray Bruhn, Allen Janssen and Andrew Clausen.

Anna Sophia Volkmann (1896 - 1994)

Anna Sophia Volkmann was born November 28, 1896, the daughter of Emil and Agnes Petersen Volkmann. She died at the Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa on Friday, February 4, 1994 at the age of ninety-seven years.

Anna was born on a farm near Schleswig, Iowa and received her education in a rural school near her home. After completing her education, she worked on the farm with her sister and her sister's husband.

She was baptized in Christ on February 20, 1898 and confirmed in the Christian faith on March 20, 1910 by Rev. W.R. Wetzler at the Friedens Evangelical Church in Schleswig. She is a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.

In 1978, Anna moved to an apartment in Schleswig and then in November of 1993, she fell and subsequently moved to the Morningside Care Center.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Velma, Edna and Christina; two brothers, Jacob and Herbert and two infant siblings.

She is survived by one great-niece Jolene Whiteing and her husband, Jim and three great-great-nieces, Renae, Cynthia and Katie Whiteing all of Schleswig; other nieces and nephews and one brother-in-law, Adelbert Firnhaber of Fort Dodge.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, February 7, 1994 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. James Schatz officiating the service and graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Evelyn Johnson provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Barb Buffum singing "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Pallbearers were: Richard Scheuring, Ronald Schneller, Vernet Soenksen, James Whiteing, Jerry Neeson and Allen Schultz. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Anna (Harm) Ullrich (1895 - 1991)

Anna Ullrich was born Jan. 8, 1895 in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of August and Mathilda Listamann Harm. She died Sunday, July 28, 1991 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at that age of 96 years.

Anna was brought up on the family farm and was baptized April 28, 1895. She received her education in a rural school near her home and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith, April 4, 1909. After completing her education, Anna remained at home and helped her parents on the farm and worked in her home sewing for other families.

On Feb. 19, 1919, Anna was united in marriage to Henry Ullrich. The couple settled on his family farm four miles south of Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of three children.

Her principal interest was the devotion she had for her family and cared for their needs with diligence. She occupied her spare time working with her flowers in addition to her vegetable garden, crocheting, and enjoyed social events with family and friends. She was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, and a member of Zion's Ladies Aid.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry; one grandson, Dennis Ewoldt; one son-in-law, Kenneth Namanny; and two brothers, Martin and William.

Survivors include her three daughters: LaVerna Ewoldt and her husband, Albert of Denison, Betty Pedersen and her husband, Donald of Manilla, and Dorothy Namanny of Denison; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Pastors Kurt Kaiser and Philip E. Bloch officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. Larry Boeck served as soloist accompanied by organist Karen Kahl. Solo selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "Just As I Am" with the congregation singing "I Know that My Redeemer Lives." Pallbearers were: Scott Namanny, Bruce Namanny, Donald Ullrich, Kevin Pedersen, Dean Ewoldt and Dale Ewoldt. The Huebner Funeral Home of Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Annie (Steckelberg) Miller (1897 - 1988)

Annie, daughter of Max and Anna Lamaack Steckelberg, was born Aug. 20, 1897, near Irwin, Ia. She attended country schools in the Irwin and Manilla area.

On March 1, 1922, Annie was united in marriage with Otto J.C.F. Miller. Three children, Melvin, Viola and LeRoy were born to this union. Annie and her husband farmed in East Boyer Township, Crawford County for many years.

Otto died on March 4, 1971; Annie moved to Manilla later that same year. In the fall of 1979 she moved to the Manilla Manor Nursing Home where she died on Monday morning, July 11, 1988, at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 21 days. Annie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church at Manilla and of the Priscilla Guild. She was the last remaining charter member of the SNAP Club, having been a member for 55 years. She also served as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a Gold Star Mother.

Besides her husband, Annie was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Melvin during World War II; a granddaughter, Jessica Steckelberg; sister, Ida Hilbert; and by six brothers: George, Henry, Charlie, Maxie, Frankie and Walter Steckelberg.

Annie is survived by her daughter, Viola Steckelberg of Denison; her son, Leroy Miller and his wife, Sandy, of Harlan; by seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Minnie Hollander of Early and Florence Lapel of Manning; a brother, John Steckelberg of Denison; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 13 at 2:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Manilla, with Pastor Glenn Wiechmann officiating. Marlene Jahn was vocalist accompanied by Bonnie Lorenzen, organist. Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery at Manilla with her grandchildren serving as pallbearers: Marty Miller, Dirk Miller, Kimberly White, Larry Steckelberg, Steve Steckelberg and Connie McKown. Honorary pallbearer was her granddaughter, Becky Buell.

Arnada I. (Hennings) Schraeder (1893 - 1993)

Arnada I. Schraeder was born at Charter Oak, Iowa, September 6, 1893, the daughter of Chris and Mary Reese Hennings. She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at Charter Oak, Iowa, October 1, 1893 and confirmed in her Christian Faith there by the Rev. Amstein on April 8, 1906. She received her education in Charter Oak and in Denison after her family moved there in 1908.

In June of 1915, Arnada was united in marriage with Carl Hansen by the Rev. Frese in Denison. Their union was blessed with six children, Clifford, Helen, Madonna, Addis, Gilbert, and Curtis. They farmed in East Boyer Township until 1930 when Carl died.

In 1933, Arnada was united in marriage with Charles Schraeder in Denison. They made their home in Denison where their union was blessed with three sons, Murle, Robert, and Dennis. Charles died in 1948 and Arnada continued to make her home in Denison where she was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and a member of the Zion Ladies Aid since 1945. Her greatest source of pride was her family and she especially enjoyed preparing meals and baking for them.

Since January 31, 1986, Arnada had resided at the Denison Care Center in Denison and it was there that her death occurred Wednesday morning, January 27, 1993. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 99 years, 4 months, and 21 days.

Including her parents and two husbands, Arnada was preceded in death by four sons, Gilbert, Curtis and Addis Hansen, and Dennis Schraeder, three grandchildren, Joseph Carl Speake, Ladonna Christiansen, and Ted Christiansen, one great grandson, Jeff Lingle, seven brothers and two sisters.

Those who survive to cherish her memory include five children, Clifford Hansen and his wife Doris of Des Moines, Iowa, Helen Speake and Madonna Christiansen, both of Denison, Murle Schraeder of Peoria, Arizona, and Robert Schraeder of Denison, two daughters-in-law, Audrey Hansen of Denison and Marlys Schraeder of Crete, Nebraska, 35 grandchildren, 65 great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 30, 1993, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. Philip E. Bloch officiating. Music for the service was provided by Henry Henningsen singing "I'm But A Stranger Here, Heaven Is My Home" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and the congregation singing "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Karen Kahl served as organist. Casket bearers were grandsons, Jerry and Steve Speake, Randy, Michael, David, James, and Bob Schraeder, Jr., Richard, Dan, Douglas, Mitch, and Nick Hansen. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Arthur C. Schwarz (1898 - 1981)

Arthur C. Schwarz was born on December 21, 1898 in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Frederick and Fredericka Kroeger Schwarz. He died on Saturday morning, May 23, 1981 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa at the age of 82.

Arthur was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He spent his early years on a family farm in Hanover Township. He received his formal education at St. Paul's Lutheran School near his home. Later he graduated from Schleswig High School.

On September 6, 1922, Arthur was united in marriage to Dorothea Peters at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Arthur was employed with Green Bay Lumber Company for 45 years. Due to ill health he was forced to retire in the early 1960's.

In addition to his parents, Arthur was preceded in death by one son Harold in 1946, three brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include, his wife Dorothea of Schleswig, one daughter Artis, Mrs. Robert Christiansen of Schleswig, two grand-daughters, Kay, Mrs. Neal Wilken of Schleswig and Miss Mary Jo Christiansen of Omaha, Nebraska and one great grand-daughter Jessica.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 26, 1981 at 2:00 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Theodore Letzring of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Leonard Hollander, Walter Petersen, Arthur Hollander, Raymond Schmidt, Roland Struck, and Hugo Dahms.

Auguste Katherine (Langenbuch) Heiden (1897 - 1978)

Auguste Katherine Heiden was born September 15, 1897 at Manchester, England, the daughter of Albert and Juliane Langenbuch. She died November 20, 1978 at Bishop Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 81.

Auguste was raised in England where she received her formal education. At the age of 17 she came to the United States with her mother and her brother. They made their first home in Crawford County, Iowa. Auguste worked as a secretary for the Denison Public Schools and later as a bookkeeper for a Denison Garage.

On August 23, 1933 she was united in marriage to Louie Heiden at Omaha, Nebraska. They made their home on a farm near Denison. They later left the farm and moved to Denison. Louie died in 1949 and since that time Auguste has made her home in Denison.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Albert. Survivors include relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held November 22, at 2:00 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetary. The Rev. Jack Heck of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe and Henry Henningsen provided the music for the service. Pallbearers were E.A. Raun, Joe Griffin, Robert Boeck, Charles Boeck, Robert Paup and Walter Kruthoff. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison.

Austin C. Saunders (1892 - 1981)

Austin C., son of Frederick James and Ruth Mary Theobald Saunders, was born Jan. 31, 1892, near Manilla, Iowa. He attended the Manilla schools.

On July 3, 1913, he was united in marriage with Mary Catherine Sowles in the Methodist Church in Denison. This union was blessed with nine children. Austin and his wife farmed near the Manilla community for many years, except for three years at Cedar Falls and six years at Fort Calhoun, Nebr. They retired to live in Manilla in 1958. He has spent the last nine months at the Eventide Home in Denison, where he died June 14, 1981, at the age of 89 years, four months and 13 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Robert; four brothers and one sister.

Austin is survived by his wife, Catherine and the following children, James of Greenville, Tex., George of Storm Lake, Harold of Janesville, Howard of Walnut, Velie of Manning, Mrs. Howard Sabel (Ruth) of Storm Lake, Eugene of Manilla and Mrs. Kenneth Jorgensen (Virginia) of Storm Lake, 26 grandchildren and 47 great grandchildren. Austin was a member of the United Methodist Church in Manilla.

Funeral services were held June 16 at 2:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Manilla. Officiating was Rev. Donald Jones. Vocalist was Kay Rutherford and Barbara Agan, organist. Pallbearers were Keith Saunders, Stanley Saunders, Dan Jorgensen, Randy Saunders, Thomas Sabel and Terry Saunders. Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery.

Herman Otto Thams (1887 - 1961)

Funeral services for Herman Thams was held Tuesday at the United Church of Christ (E&R). Two hymns were sung by the quartette composed of Mrs Ray Martens, Mrs I. M. Canada and Mrs Ernie Grell. Rev. Walter Baumgartner read the following obituary:

Herman Otto Thams, son of Jurgen and Cathrina Thams, nee Henningsen, was born near Boone, Iowa, on September 8, 1887. He passed away on the 13th of May, 1961 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital. Herman O Thams was baptized on July 9, 1888 by the Lutheran pastor J. B. Guenthner of Boone, Iowa. Through confirmation, he united with the Lutheran Church at Denison.

On December 15, 1909 he was united in marriage to Paulina Schroeder by the Rev. Mr Wetzeler. To this union one son was born. Mr Thams grew up near Boone. When his father died in 1890, his mother and family moved to Crawford county. They settled on a farm, southeast of Schleswig, in Goodrich township. Herman Thams continued to farm after the death of his mother and resided on the same place until his death.

For the past year, Mr Thams has been confined to his home most of the time. On Friday, May 5th he entered Crawford County Memorial Hospital. He suffered a stroke on Sunday morning, and with the best of medical care, his condition became serious, early Saturday and he passed away Saturday evening at 8:30.

Surviving are: his son, Kenneth and daughter in law, one grandson Allen, one sister Minnie Thams, and other relatives and friends.

His wife preceded him in death December 1, 1956. One brother, John, and two sisters, Mrs Marie Koenk and Mrs Emma Johannsen also preceded him in death.

Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery. The pallbearers were: Eldo Hollander, Raymond Henningsen, Allen Johannsen, Elmer Gierstorf, Art Bohlmann and Magnus Wellendorf.

Louisa M. (Reinking) Teut (1898 - 1984)

Louisa M. Teut was born on July 13, 1898 in Grant Township, Ida County, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Emma Henrichsen Reinking. She died Dec. 14, 1984 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 86.

Louisa was raised on a family farm. She received her primary education in the rural schools near her home. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township.

On October 29, 1919, Louisa was united in marriage to Albert Teut at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Together they farmed in Soldier Township until 1941 when they moved into Schleswig. Mr. Teut died in 1979. Louisa was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid. For many years she taught Sunday School in her church.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Louisa was preceded in death by one daughter, Elaine and one brother Edward.

Survivors include, one daughter, Joan, Mrs. Gordon Nahnsen of Schleswig, two grandchildren, Neal and Lori, one brother Carl Reinking of Spring Lake, Mich., and one sister, Mrs. LaMorne Iwen of Rock Rapids.

Funeral services were held Dec. 17, at 10:30 A.M. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. The Rev. Richard Nelson officiated at the services. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Mrs. Leroy Hight served as organist. The congregation sang The Lord Is My Shepherd and I'm But A Stranger Here. Pallbearers were Bill Brockmann, Richard Frank, Donald Clausen, Donald Teut, Leonard Teut and Ervin Neddermeyer. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Mary (Andresen) Theedt (1899 - 1984)

Mary Theedt was born on March 28, 1899 in Germany the daughter of Andrew and Luci Ingwensen Andresen. She died Oct 20, 1984, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 85.

Mary came to the United States at the age of 13 with her parents and two brothers. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Germany.

In 1916, Mary was united in marriage to Herman Ladwig. Together they made their home on a farm in Hanover Twp. Later they moved into Denison.

On March 10, 1944, Mary was united in marriage to Detlef Theedt in Omaha, Neb. They made their home in Denison. After Mr. Theedt's death in 1981, Mary continued to reside in the community where she was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mary was preceded in death by one son, two daughters, two grandchildren and one brother.

Survivors include, one son, William Ladwig of Denison, two daughters, Anna, Mrs. Ervin Crouch of Cicero, Ind. and Hellen, Mrs. Lewis Puck of Denison, 20 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother Louie Andresen of Charter Oak, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Oct 24, at 1:30 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Jack D. Heck officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist with Henry Henningsen as soloist. Hymns included, "Nearer My God To Thee" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." Pallbearers were Glen Ladwig, Bill Ladwig, Larry Ladwig, Gary Ladwig, Michael Wold and Leroy Jacobsen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Otto Hans Teut (1889 - 1971)

Funeral services for Otto Teut were held on Monday, May 17, 1971 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with Rev. F.A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The congregation sang "The Lord's My Shepherd" and the choir sang "I'm But A Stranger Here".

Otto Hans Teut, son of Peter Teut and Sophia nee Boysen, was born in Soldier Township October 14, 1889. He grew up in that community. He was married to Edna Naeve on August 20, 1912. The couple farmed for over 30 years 8 miles west of Schleswig. In 1943, they retired in Schleswig.

For 20 years Otto was custodian of the Schleswig Park. He was school secretary of Soldier Township for 16 years. One of his hobbies was custom carpenter work. He became ill last week and died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Friday afternoon, May 14. He was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his widow Edna, two children: Lucille, wife of George Kuhlmann of Charter Oak and Lenhardt of Schleswig, six grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren, his brother Albert of Schleswig and his sister Stella Hermiche of Holstein.

He was preceded in death by one daughter Luverne, wife of Raymond Kuhlmann of Charter Oak, who died on Christmas Eve 1955, two brothers and seven sisters. He attained to 81 years, and 7 months.

Pallbearers were: Lowell Teut, Robert Fritz, Wayne Elwell, Wayne Miller, Allan Kuhlmann and Ronald Kuhlmann. Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery.

Walter W. Thies (1924 - 1987)

Walter W. Thies was born June 25, 1924 in Milford township, Crawford County, Ia., the son of William Thies and Maria Noelck Thies. He died on Nov. 2, 1987 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 63 years.

Walter attended the McGaren school graduating from the 8th grade. He then worked with his father on the home farm.

On Aug. 27, 1944 he and Joyce Holman of Denison were united in marriage at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. To this union four children were born. After marriage they settled on the home farm. They farmed for 17 years. In 1961 Walter started working for the Co-Op in Denison, a job he held until retiring in 1980. They continued to make their home on the farm. Walter was a past president of the Izaak Walton League, was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and a honorary member of the FFA.

In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by two sisters: Emma Vetter and Ella Thies and one granddaughter, Lori Ann Thies.

Survivors include his wife Joyce of Denison; sons: Larry Thies and his wife, Mary, of Denison, Donald Thies and his wife, Vivian, of Denison; daughters: Linda and her husband, Steve Culver of Redmond, Wash., and Darlene and her husband, Richard Taylor of Littleton, Colo.; twelve grandchildren and three sisters: Edna Sampson of Walnut, Bertha Neumann of Denison and Mrs. Marvin, (Anna) Lackman of Denison.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Reverend Kurt Kaiser officiated.

Warren Earl Tyler (1921 - 1989)

Warren Earl Tyler, the son of Samuel and Emma Lou Shaler Tyler, was born on March 1, 1921 at Riceville, Iowa, and died on January 8, 1989 at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa at the age of 67 years.

The Schleswig V.F.W. Post No. 3930 served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were LeRoy Bumann, Marvine Petersen, Myron Schwinger, Bill Koll, Bill Hinderaker, Harlan Harper, Merwin Barnes and Robert E. Fye. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig, Iowa.

Warren grew up in Riceville, Iowa and attended school there, graduating with the class of 1938. He attended the University of Iowa at Iowa City, Iowa for one year; transferring to Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, Iowa. His education was interrupted when he served his Country with the Army in the South Pacific. He received his discharge in 1946 and entered Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa in the school of Veterinary Medicine. He received his degree as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1950 from Iowa State University.

On June 25, 1949, Warren Tyler and Betty Jean Searcy of Cresco, Iowa were united in marriage at the Baptist Parsonage in Centerville, Iowa. This union was blessed with four children. They made their home in Radcliffe where Dr. Tyler established a Veterinary practice, which he maintained until 1969. He then became a Federal Veterinarian for the U.S.D.A., and they moved to Schleswig, Iowa. Dr. Tyler retired from that position in 1983 but they continued to make their home in Schleswig. Dr. Tyler was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and the V.F.W. Post No. 3930 of Schleswig.

Preceding Warren in death were his parents. Survivors include his wife Betty of Schleswig; His children: Samuel Wayne Tyler and his wife Susan of Emerson, Nebraska; Coleen Kay and her husband Arthur Dorman of Clarendon Hills, Illinois; Ralph William Tyler and his wife Ann of Onalaska, Wisconsin and Joel David Tyler and his wife Mary of Cushing, Iowa. Also surviving are six grandchildren; one brother Sanford Tyler of Chester, Iowa and one sister, Lois Tyler of Casper, Wyoming.

Otto Thul (1887 - 1965)

Soldier Township - Otto Thul, a long time resident of Soldier Township, died at his home Feb. 25 (1965), after a two month illness.

He was born Jan. 4, 1887 in Germany. He came to America in 1910 and two years later returned to Germany and returned with his fiance, Emma Maempel. They were married in New York City, Feb. 16, 1912. They resided in Illinois for some time then on a farm near Schleswig and in 1947 moved to the present home. He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran church in Mapleton.

Survivors include his wife, six sons, Helmut and Emil of Schleswig, Otto R. of Albuquerque, N. M., Henry, Storm Lake, Harry, Sioux City, and George of Danbury; two daughters, Mrs. John Dose and Mrs. Leo Treiber of Danbury, 28 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a sister and three brothers in Germany.

Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Matthew's Lutheran church in Mapleton. Burial was in Mt. Hope cemetery in Mapleton.

Edwin Herbert Jochimsen (1906 - 1990)

Edwin Herbert Jochimsen was born July 12, 1906 in Nishnabotna Township, the son of Henry and Emma Niebauer Jochimsen. He died May 28, 1990, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 83 years.

The formative years of his life were spent on the farm, and he received his education in a rural school near his home where he lived with his parents. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by Rev. C.W. Schmidt. As a young man, Edwin continued his farming career in both the Manilla and Charter Oak areas.

He was united in marriage Oct. 11, 1933, to Esther Spack at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. This union was blessed with two sons. In 1966, Ed retired from farming and he and Esther moved to Charter Oak where he worked for the town of Charter Oak until his retirement in the early years of the 1980's. He was a caring and loving husband and father who worked hard providing for his family. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, and a member of the National Lutheran Layman's League.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Claus and Louie; and two sisters, Freda and Lillie.

Survivors include his wife, Esther; and two sons, Virgil and his wife, Nancy of Brimingham, Ala., and Ronald and his wife, Cathy of Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two brothers, John of Denison and Herman and his wife, Ida of Manning.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Thursday, at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, with Pastor L. C. Gebhardt officiating. Interment was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mrs. L. C. Gebhardt was organist. The St. John's Ladies Choir selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." The congregational hymn was "Heaven is My Home." Serving as pallbearers were Mark Spack, Rick Spack, Dallas Lile, Leroy Joens, Merlin Joens and Abe Gronau. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Service at Charter Oak.

Edwin Merinus Schmadeke (1906 - 1993)

Edwin Merinus Schmadeke, son of Henry Schmadeke and Wanda Van Thuil was born at Schleswig, IA on July 8, 1906 and passed away at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on March 12, 1993 at the age of 86 years.

Edwin spent his boyhood years on a farm near Schleswig and was baptized at the Hanover Lutheran Church in 1906 and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in 1921. He held continuous memberships here.

He worked on farms in eastern Iowa for sometime in addition to owning and operating a restaurant in Maquoketa, IA for a short time with his sister, Eleanor. When he returned to Schleswig he was employed as a mechanic. Edwin was called to active duty in the armed forces in the latter part of 1941. He served his country in the states, and overseas in Germany, France, Italy and Sicily with the 11th Evacuation Hospital Unit until his discharge in 1945.

He returned to Schleswig and was employed as a mechanic. He later began operating the Skelly Station, and subsequently went into partnership with the station, Skelly Fuel Business and a corn sheller for a number of years. Following this, Edwin became custodian for the elementary school building, a position he held for six years. After retiring from those duties, he worked part-time for two summers as greens-keeper at the Schleswig golf course, before completely retiring. He enjoyed gardening as a hobby until his later years.

Edwin was united in marriage to Dorothy Hansen on June 25, 1950. They made their home in Schleswig and were blessed with a son and a daughter.

He entered the Veterans Hospital in Omaha in February of 1988, and was subsequently taken to the Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake. From there, he was transferred to the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison on May 11th. In January of this year, he was admitted to the Crawford County Memorial Hospital. Edwin was a member of the local Legion and V.F.W. Posts of Schleswig. He served as commander of the V.F.W. Post for three years, was a member of the local fire department and served one term on the city council.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Schleswig; one son, Bruce and his wife, Anna of Marcus, IA; and one daughter, Janice and her husband, Stephen Christy of Grand Prairie, TX. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Christa Schmadeke, Megan Christy and Kyle Christy; one sister, Eleanor Howrey of Cedar Rapids; his mother-in-law, Minnie Hansen of Holstein, IA and other relatives.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 16, 1993 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, IA. Pastor Donald Wagner officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Nearer, My God, to Thee." Pallbearers and Military Honors were: V.F.W. Post 3930 and American Legion Post 645, Schleswig, IA. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Schleswig.

Eleonora W. Huebner (1905 - 1988)

Eleonora W. Huebner was born Dec. 30, 1905, the daughter of Otto William and Emma Pautsch Huebner, and died Oct. 20, 1988, at the age of 82 years. She was born on the family farm in Hanover Township where she spent her youth and attended rural schools. In 1924, she moved with her family to Denison where she remained for her entire working career.

In 1936, Eleonora was hospitalized for one and a half years with tuberculosis but was blessed with a full recovery and returned to Denison to work with the family in the restaurant business before entering a career in the insurance industry in 1941. She was one of the earliest women to have entered this career, and as a result of her determined efforts, won many top awards with State Farm, including: top life insurance sales person of the year, in Iowa, as well as other significant awards throughout her twenty-nine years of service with State Farm.

After her retirement from State Farm Insurance Company in October of 1969, she moved to Spirit Lake, where she enjoyed having family visits and vacations. She spent more time with her family, and in recent years, wintered with each of her nieces and nephews.

In August of 1988, she made the bold move to Omaha, Neb., where she lived until her death. The Lord blessed her life with good health and she as able to remain active throughout her life with cooking, baking, card clubs and golf. Her Christian happiness was of special importance to her throughout her life, and was a past member of Zion Lutheran Church of Denison, Immanuel Lutheran Church of Spirit Lake, and currently a member of Pacific Hills Lutheran Church in Omaha.

Eleonora will be remembered for her many accomplishments and her diligence, but most of all by those who loved her and who were loved by her, we shall remember her kindness and generosity, her love and affection, and the happiness and joy she has given us, and are grateful that our lives have been resplendently enriched with the affectionate memories that will live in our hearts forever.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Ben; two sisters, Ruth, and Clara Davis; and one foster sister, Dorothy Kuhlmann.

She is survived by two brothers, Walter and his wife, Judith of Denison, Mark and his wife, Rita of Omaha, Neb.; one sister, Esther Guy and her husband, Harold of Spirit Lake; a sister-in-law, Edna Else and her husband, George of Mesa, Ariz.; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 24, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor J.W. Ristvedt and Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services, with interment in the Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Mrs. Darold Kahl was organist and Henry Henningsen, soloist. Selections were "My Hope is Built On Nothing Less and "The Lord's Prayer." Congregational songs were "Onward, Christian Soldiers" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Trumpet accompanist was Scott Meyer. Honorary pallbearers were Dale Huebner, James Davis, Phillip Rattenborg, Tom Sullivan, David Lubow, John Carlson, Jeff M. Huebner, Walter R. Huebner and Dennis Huebner. Serving as pallbearers were Charles J. Pollak, Arnold Gallagher, Robert Reimers, Harold A. Paup, Robert W. Paup and Kenneth Paup.

Elizabeth ( Kruthoff) Lueck (1906 - 2000)

Elizabeth Lueck was born on a farm three miles southwest of Denison, Iowa, July 24, 1906, the daughter of William and Christina Alter Kruthoff. She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism September 15, 1906 at Zion Lutheran Church and confirmed in her Christian Faith there March 28, 1920. She was raised on the farm and received her education in the rural school near her home and at Zion Lutheran School in Denison. Following her education she stayed on the farm assisting where needed.

On August 22,1929, Elizabeth was united in marriage with Harry Lueck at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Frehse performing the ceremony. Their union was blessed with four children, Betty, Kenneth, Donna and Anna. They made their home on the farm six miles south of Denison where she was a busy homemaker raising their family and assisting her husband when needed. In addition to farming they started a seed corn business. For a time, during those years, Elizabeth and the youngest two children lived in Arizona to improve the health of their youngest daughter. They later moved to Denison where they continued to run the seed corn business and started the Firestone Store. Returning to farm life they purchased a farm near Buck Grove and built a home there later retiring to Buck Grove.

Harry died December 25, 1974. Following her husband's death, Elizabeth moved to Denison where she enjoyed her hobbies of walking, knitting, crocheting, bowling and playing cards. During those years she enjoyed trips to visit family in California, Hawaii, Arizona, Washington, D.C. Wyoming and South Dakota. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Zion Ladies Aid and Evening Guild. Other memberships she enjoyed included the American Legion Auxiliary and Denison Senior Citizens. In earlier years she enjoyed fishing at their cabin on Little Spirit Lake in Minnesota.

Due to failing health Elizabeth moved to the Manilla Manor, Manilla, Iowa in May of 1994 and it was there her death occurred Tuesday evening, October 3, 2000. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 94 years, 2 months and 9 days.

Including her parents and husband. Elizabeth was preceded in death by two daughters, Donna Knittel and Anna Lueck, and four brothers, John, Conrad, Raymond and Walter Kruthoff.

Those who remain to cherish her memory include one daughter, Betty and husband, William Caress of San Clemente, California, one son, Kenneth Lueck and wife, Barbara of Denison, one son-in-law, Marvin Knittel of Kearney, Nebraska, ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren, one sister, Anna Dethmann of Denison, one sister-in-law, Marie Kruthoff of Denison, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Ella E. (Klink) Schultz (1909 - 1985)

Ella E. Schultz was born on June 10, 1909, in East Boyer Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Rudolph and Emma Peterson Klink. She died Sunday evening, September 8, 1985, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 76.

Ella moved with her family at an early age to a farm in Stockholm Township. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home.

Ella was united in marriage to Edgar Schultz on March 5, 1941, in Denison. Together they made their home on a farm near Schleswig. Edgar died in 1963. Ella continued to make her home on the farm following Edgar's death.

In addition to her parents and husband, Ella was preceded in death bv one son Dale, and two brothers Otto and Walter.

Survivors include two sons, Arlo and Lyle of Schleswig, and one daughter Betty, Mrs. Rev. Michael Sharp of Logan, Iowa. She is further survived by one granddaughter Melissa Lynn Sharp, one brother Meinhard Klink of Denison, and a half-brother Albert Peterson of Wall Lake, Iowa, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 11, 1985, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Richard Nelson and Vicar Dr. John R. Stephenson officiated at the services and graveside rites. The Immanuel Lutheran Ladies Chorus with Mrs. Marlene Hight as organist provided music for the services. Hymns for the services included "The Lord is My Shepherd" and "How Great Thou Art". Serving as pallbearers were Randy Klink, Robert Klink, Ronald Klink, Larry Kastner, Burdell Dorale and Sylvester Greder.

Ella (Harder) Fischer (1902 - 1994)

Ella, daughter of Adolph and Dora Linde Harder, was born June 22, 1902, near Denison, Iowa. She attended rural schools near her home, and Lutheran school in Denison. As a young woman Ella worked as a hired girl for farmers and worked in hotels, including the Park Hotel in Manning.

On September 9, 1925, Ella was united in marriage with Herman Fischer. They farmed south of Manning for 43 years, moving to Manning in 1969. Last fall Ella and Herman were privileged to celebrate their 68th wedding anniversary.

Ella had been in failing health for several days, and was hospitalized in Manning and then at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, where she died on Friday morning, February 25, 1994, at the age of 91 years, eight months and three days.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Rudolph and Otto Harder; a sister, Meta Petersen; a son, Carl, in infancy; and a grandson, Allan Fischer.

Ella is survived by her husband, Herman, of Manning; by two children: Earl and his wife, Helen, of Harlan, and Lois and her husband, Mike Greder, of Denison; by six grandchildren: Sandra and her husband, Dan Nelson, of Harlan; Karla and her husband, Scott Nollen, of Solon, Iowa, Ralph Greder and his wife, Barbara, of Denison,Gary Greder and his wife Julie, of West Jordan, Utah, Vicki and her husband, Larry Szasz, of Abilene, Texas and Karen and her husband, Brian Engleman, of Hawarden Iowa; by 16 great grandchildren; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Ella was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and held membership at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Ever since Ella was a girl she enjoyed crocheting, tatting and other hand work, and baking.

Services were held on Monday, February 28, 1994 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Manning, Iowa with Pastor Robert Riggert officiating. Music was provided by Fern Jensen as organist and the congregation singing: "Rock of Ages", "Nearer My God To Thee" and "Savior, Again To Your Dear Name". Interment was in the Manning City Cemetery, Manning, Iowa. Pallbearers included Dan Nelson, Ralph Greder, Gary Greder, Brian Engleman, Larry Szasz and Corey Nelson. Ohde Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ella Anna (Moeller) Heiden (1900 - 1977)

Ella Anna Moeller, daughter of Adolph and Elizabeth Ketelsen Moeller, was born April 22, 1900 at Manilla, Iowa. She attended rural schools near Denison.

She was united in marriage to Jay Conrad Heiden and the couple made their home on a farm south of Denison. To this marriage was born one son, Glen.

Ella died in her home on Dec. 31, 1977, She was a long time member of the United Presbyterian Church of Denison and was very active in Melrose Circle of the United Presbyterian Women's Association. She was also a member of the Garden Club, World War I Veterans, the Legion auxiliary and the Farmer's Union Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, three brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Eileen Heiden; grandsons Bill, Jerry, Jay and John, and granddaughter Patricia. She is also survived by two great-grandsons Jason and Quentin and great-grand-daughter Angela, by one brother, Herbert Moeller of Denison, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Elsie Moeller of Des Moines, by other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Jan. 3, 1978 at 11 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church, Denison, with Rev. James D. Cobb officiating. Mrs. Connie Zenk was soloist and Mrs. Nancy Miles, organist. Pallbearers were Bill Heiden, Jerry Heiden, Jay Heiden, John Heiden, Neal Moeller and Darrell Moeller. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery. Maxwell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ella (Segebart) Ladehoff (1909 - 1993)

Ella, daughter of Ernest and Augusta Krauel Segebart, was born Jan. 23, 1909 in Crawford County, near Vail, Ia. She attended the rural schools near her home.

On Jan. 23, 1929 Ella was united in marriage with Henry Detlef Ladehoff. They lived and farmed in localities near Arion, Vail, and Denison. In 1939 the family moved to Manilla where Ella's husband was employed by the Milwaukee Road. He died in 1962. Ella continued to make her home in Manilla and spent much of her time employed outside the home. She worked at the Manilla Manor Nursing Home, Longnecker's Produce, Ocoma Foods in Harlan and Carroll, the Candy Kitchen in Manilla, and she did babysitting. She was active in the Trinity Lutheran Church and especially enjoyed Bible Study. Ella also held membership in the VFW Auxiliary.

Ella became ill Thursday morning, Feb. 25, 1993 and was taken to Manning General Hospital where she died later that day at the age of 84 years, one month and two days.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents; a great-granddaughter, Kaelyn Odendahl; a grandson, Tim Rutherford; two brothers: Ernest and Bennie Segebart; and the following sisters: Emma Bock, Annie Poleske, Lena Ladehoff, Frieda Natzel, Elsie Ladehoff, and Matilda and Marie in infancy.

Survivors include her children: Arlene and her husband Duane Wegner of Manning; Rita and her husband Cal Lustig of Huntington Beach, Calif.; Esther and her husband Bob Zehrung of Northglenn, Colo.; Betty and her husband Tom Scott of Westminster, Colo.; JoAnn and her husband Leroy Rutherford, of Lakewood, Colo.; Lorraine and her husband Tom Wolfe of Loomis, Calif.; Darlene and her husband, Bruce Warnke of Carroll and Robert Ladehoff of Carroll; 29 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren; a brother, Herman C. Segebart of Coronado, Calif.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services were held Monday, March 1,1993 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Manilla, Ia. with interment at Nishnabotna Cemetery, Manilla. Officiating the services was Pastor Glenn Wiechmann. Organist was Bonnie Lorenzen who played "Amazing Grace", "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" and "The Church's One Foundation". Pallbearers were Roger Wegner, Mike Segebart, Gary Odendahl, Dean Wegner, Jeff Corbin and Jim Richardson. The Ohde Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ella (Detlefsen) Thomsen (1906 - 1998)

Ella Thomsen was born September 7, 1906, the daughter of Gustav and Emma Hildebrandt Detlefsen. She died at the Denison Care Center, Thursday, March 19, 1998 at the age of ninety-one.

Ella was born on a farm in Hanover Township, Iowa east of Charter Oak. She was Baptized in Christ January 19, 1907 by the Rev. Wm. Frehse and later confirmed in the Lutheran Faith, April 22, 1922. As a child, she lived with her parents on farms in Hanover and Goodrich Townships and began her education in rural schools near her home. In 1921, Ella moved to Denison and completed her education in the Lutheran Parochial School graduating therein 1922. After completing her education, Ella worked at the Jacobsen Bakery for four years and the Balle-Brodersen Department Store for three years.

Ella was united in marriage to Andrew Thomsen, February 27, 1929, by Rev. Wm. Frehse, in the Lutheran Parsonage. The couple settled in Denison Township, farming there for seven years before moving to Denison. They were blessed with the birth of five children.

On October 15, 1993, Ella moved to the Denison Care Center. In her leisure time, Ella enjoyed crocheting and socializing with her family and friends as a member of various card clubs. She was a devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and a member of their Dorcas Society. Ella was dedicated to her family as a loving wife, mother and grandmother and cared for her family with diligence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Andrew on March 5, 1986; one sister, Rosa; and two grandchildren.

Survivors mourning her passing are: three sons, Donald and his wife, Marilyn of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Kenneth and his wife, Bette Anne of Beaverton, Oregon; Loren and his wife, Sadie of Kansas City, Missouri; two daughters, Sharon Petersen and her husband, Robert of Armstrong, Iowa; Carol Schultz and her husband, Roger of Des Moines, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Pauline Denker of Denison; one brother-in-law, Eddie Evers; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, March, 23, 1998 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiating the service and grave side rites at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for Soloist Henry Henningsen singing, "How Great Thou Art" and "On Eagles Wings" with the congregation singing, Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound. Those serving as pallbearers were: Camron Thomsen, Michael Petersen, Scott Thomsen, Clarence Denker, Derald Evers and Edward Ransom. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Ellen Dorothy (Odefy) Bechen (1909 - 2001)

Ellen Dorothy Bechen was born April 12, 1909, the daughter of Fred and Adele Lapel Odefy. She died Thursday, May 31, 2001 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-two.

Ellen was born on a farm near Vail, Iowa. As a young child she moved with her family to Castalia, South Dakota, where she received her education in a rural school near her home. In the early 1930s, Ellen returned to Iowa with her family.

On January 6, 1934, Ellen was united in marriage to Leo Bechen at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa. The couple settled on a farm in the Charter Oak and Ricketts area. In 1972, they retired and moved to Charter Oak. Ellen entered the Denison Care Center in April of 2000.

Ellen was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak and their Altar Society. She was also a member of the Hanover Neighborhood Sewing Club. Ellen was a very loving and caring mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed by her family. She enjoyed cooking and baking, especially apple pie. Ellen also loved attending family gatherings, embroidering, crocheting, quilting and China Painting.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1985, four sisters, Lydia Bechen, Erma Vogt, Hilda Comstock and Leona Odefy, two brothers, Alvin Odefy and Arno Odefy in infancy.

Survivors include one son, Ladean Bechen and his wife, Mary Ann of Ida Grove; two granddaughters, Cindy Hesse and her husband, James of Moville; Nancy Denker and her husband, Dennis of Denison; three grandsons, Nick Bechen of Omaha; Dr. Gene Bechen of Terra Haute, Indiana; Steven Bechen and his wife, Amy of Moville; sixteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Vera Mesenbrink and her husband, Francis of Manilla; one sister-in-law, Rosalia Odefy of Denison; other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 4, 2001, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Fr. Richard Ball served as Celebrant of the Mass and grave side services held at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Charter Oak, Iowa. Phyllis Kragel served as organist for soloist Angela Bechen as she sang "Be Not Afraid". Those serving as giftbearers were her great-grandchildren. Those serving as Lectors were Nancy Denker and Cindy Hesse. Those serving as pallbearers were: Nathan Hesse, Steve Bechen, Nick Bechen, Aaron Bechen, Jesse Denker, and Gene Bechen. A Legion of Mary Rosary was held at 6:30 p.m., and a Wake Service was held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 3, 2001 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak, Iowa. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of the arrangements.

Mearl Orval Myers (1883 - 1963)

Mearl Orval Myers, son of Myron and Sarah Dillivan Myers was born April 11, 1883 near Deloit in Milford township. He was the first of a family of five children. He received his education in the rural schools of Milford township.

On Dec. 18, 1904, he was united in marriage to Bessie Winans. Following their marriage they farmed in Milford township for ten years and then moved to Deloit. He then attended Omaha Barber college and after completing his training he opened a barber shop in Deloit and was a barber there for 33 years.

In March 1905, he was baptized and confirmed into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was an active church worker and on Oct. 15, 1916, he was ordained a teacher in the church. On June 1, 1924 he was ordained an Elder in Deloit. Three years later he was elected Pastor of the Deloit church, a position he faithfully filled for 33 years. During his Pastorage he was District Sunday School Superintendent for a number of years.

Besides his church activities and barber duties, he was active in Community affairs, serving as a member of the town council, treasurer of the Deloit school for many years and a trustee for Milford township for seven years.
He had been in failing health for the past two years and was hospitalized on May 20, where he died on June 28, at the age of 80 years, two months and 17 days.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother, Lacy and one sister, Mrs. Stella Imes and a brother in infancy.

He is survived by his wife, Bessie, one daughter, Margaret, Mrs. Warren Bock of Le Mars, one sister, Mrs. Cloe Newcom of Cameron, Mo., two nephews, Lowell Newcom of Kidder, Mo., Mearl Newcom of Oklahoma, two nieces, Mrs. Milton Childress of Denison and Mrs. Clayton Turner of Carthage, Mo.

Funeral services were held in the R.L.D.S. church in Deloit, June 30 at 2 p.m. E.R. Butterworth officiated. Mrs. Darwin Cose, soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Dorothy Norman, pianist. Pallbearers were, Curtis and Darwin Cose, Mearl Graham, Sr., Lonald Patchin, William Slechta and Elroy Hansen. Interment in the Deloit cemetery.

Mike Molony (1888 - 1968)

Mike Molony, son of Mike Molony and Bridget Ayers Molony was born Jan. 3, 1888 on the farm south of Denison where he lived his entire life with the exception of 3 years when he was first married and moved to another Molony farm.

He had been hospitalized on various times since last November. He was operated on in Clarkson Hospital in Omaha on May 3. Two weeks later he was transferred back to the Denison Hospital and died June 19 (1968).

On Nov. 29, 1911 he was married to Selma Otto at Denison. To this union seven children were born. One daughter, Ruth died at the age of 15. Mrs. Molony died Oct. 14, 1959.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Selma, daughter Ruth, his parents Mike and Bridget Molony, an infant brother and sister and brothers John, William, Dan and Joe and sisters Catherine and Sadie.

Survivors include his six children Nellie, Mrs. George Pieper; Eileen, Mrs. Roy Johnson; Grace, Mrs. Warren Hass; Kathleen, Mrs. Cyrenus Petersen; Inez, Mrs. Jack Richey, and one son Joe, one sister, Mrs. Margaret Champion and one brother, Paul, and 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 22, at 10 A.M. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with Father Jerome Koenig officiating. Altar boys were Tom Jones, Tom Curnyn and Mitch Hansen. Burial was in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery with the following pallbearers: Joe Curnyn, Russell (Gus) Hickey, Emmett King, Wilhelm Johannsen, James Collins.

Peter H. Mohr (1879 - 1965)

Funeral services for Peter H. Mohr, who died April 4th (1965) at the Crawford county memorial hospital were held on April 7th at the United Church of Christ. Mrs Ray Martens and Mrs Ernie Grell sang, "Abide with Me" and "Nearer My God to Thee." They were accompanied on the organ by Mrs John H. Evers. Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiated.

Mr Mohr was born in Scott county, Iowa on August 1, 1879.

He married Olga Wellendorf on February 17, 1904. She died on December 23, 1904. On December 23, 1905 he married Johanna Miller Wieck. They lived in Otter Creek township for one year, then moved to Clinton county, near Larchwood in 1910. They lived there for ten years moving to Ida county in 1920, where they lived on the farm for 17 years before moving to Schleswig in 1937. He worked as a carpenter for 11 years and was a county roads foreman for eight years before retiring.

Mr and Mrs Mohr observed their golden wedding on May 18, 1959. He was a member of the United Church of Christ and was a member of the church board for eight years.

He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Lillie, Mrs Howard Hirth of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Rosa, Mrs Erwin Bendixen of Schleswig; a son, Harvey of Schleswig and a step-son Henry Wieck; four grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery. The honorary pallbearers were: John H. Evers, Ed Riessen, E. W. Claussen, Frank Jensen, Ole Wigg, Lorenz Petersen, Otto Keller and Otto Teut. Pallbearers were Harold Schultz, H. H. Jess, Herbert Wellendorf, Harry Wellendorf, John Ehler and Raymond Ehler.

Raymond Detlef Martens (1905 - 1968)

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 24, for Raymond D. Martens at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, with Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. John Evers, organist accompanied Mrs. Don Meyer and Mrs. Ernie Grell who sang "My God and I" and "Lead Kindly Light".

Raymond Detlef, son of John Martens and Adelia nee Schumann, was born on February 16, 1905 at Manning, Iowa. He was united in marriage on October 1, 1929 to Evelyn Martens. They farmed near Manning the first few years, then they moved to Westside until 1951, then moved 3 miles south of Schleswig, from here they moved to Schleswig in August of 1967.

Mr. Martens passed away at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, September 21 (1968) after a lingering illness. He attained the age of 63 years, seven months and five days. He was a member of the United Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, one daughter, Verta, wife of Gene Pugh and three grandchildren, one sister, Lydia Wiedeman of Sac City, two brothers, Walter of Manning and Willis of Hyattsville, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers were: Otto Massman, Charles Stuhr, Hugo Wilhelm, Henry Petersen, Bernhard Jensen and Louis Schmadeke. Interment was made in the Morgan Cemetery.

Renata Emma (Alberts) Maack (1921 - 1964)

Funeral services were held Thursday, November 26 1964 for Mrs August Maack at St. Luke's Lutheran Church at Ricketts with Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating.

Renata Emma, daughter of Carl Alberts and his wife Louise nee Schwnake, was born in Dodge County, Scribner, Nebraska on June 16th 1921. The Albert family moved to the Charter Oak vicinity in 1936. On December 12, 1945, she was married to August Maack by the Rev. Clarence Pauling of Ida Grove. The Lord blessed the couple with two children Maureen and Dean.

Renata has been in ill health for the past four years and died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Thursday afternoon, November 26th. She was preceded in death by one stepdaughter Arbie who died in 1957.

She is survived by her husband August of Charter Oak. Two children: Maureen and Dean at home. Three step-children: Janice, wife of Carl Schreiber Jr. of Schleswig; Myron of Ute, and Ruth, wife of Cletus Broich of Wall Lake. Three brothers: Walter of Fremont, Nebraska; Melvin of Hooper, Nebraska and Dennis of Dassle, Minnesota. One sister: Gladys, wife of Leonard Wiegel of Schleswig.

She was a very faithful member of St. Luke's Lutheran church. For many years she was an active member of the Ladies Aid Society. She attained unto 43 years, 5 months and 10 days.

Music was by Mrs Leo Bruhn, Organist. Hymns were: "Jesus Saviour Pilot Me" and "There is an Hour of Peaceful Rest." Pallbearers were Larry Alberts, Robert Alberts, Earl Hiller, Ronald Maak, Arlo Schoenfeld and Larry Wiegel. Interment was made in the St. Clair Cemetery at Ute, Iowa.

Sophia Doris (Mesenbrink) Naab (1910 - 1983)

Sophia Doris Naab was born on a farm in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, April 7, 1910, the daughter of Henry L. and Anna Lorenzen Mesenbrink. She spent her early years on the farm and received her grade school education in the rural schools of Crawford and Calhoun Counties. She then attended the Denison High School.

On July 18, 1926, Sophia was united in marriage with Charles Naab at Denison. They made their home on farms in Goodrich Township until 1951 when they retired from farming and moved to Denison. After moving to Denison, Sophia was employed at the Red Lantern Steak House for several years retiring in 1972. Charles died Jan. 24, 1976, and Sophia continued to reside at her home in Denison.

On Jan. 9, of this year, Sophia entered the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison and on Jan. 16, she was transferred to the Bishop Clarkson Hospital in Omaha. It was there her death occurred Jan. 17, 1983. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 72 years, 9 months, and 10 days. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

Sophia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother, Henry Mesenbrink, three sisters, Alma Moyer, Anna Zierka, and Mathilda Meeves, and one grandson, Brent Perkins.

She is survived by three daughters, Ruby (Mrs. Gene) Bagwell of Denison, Donna (Mrs. Albert) Perkins of Greensboro, N.C., and Linda (Mrs. Bill) Greene of Ames, six grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, one brother, George Siebert of Wisconsin, and three sisters, Frieda (Mrs. Francis) Lingle of Denison, Mrs. Rose Berner of Denison, and Mrs. Lillie Johannsen of Sterling, Ill. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Jan. 19, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Jack D. Heck officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" and the congregation singing "Rock of Ages" and "Beautiful Savior". Mrs. Fred Rabe was the organist. Pallbearers included Robert Carlson, Robert Paup, Vernon Watje, Reynold Gehlsen, Ronald Paulsen, and Larry Berner. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Pfannebecker-Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Virgil M.F. Nehls (1917 - 1976)

Virgil Martin Nehls, son of August and Elma Mundt Nehls, was born in Crawford County, Oct. 7, 1917 and died Sunday, July 11, 1976, at Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, Nebr., at the age of 58 years, 9 months and 4 days.

Mr. Nehls was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and received his education in rural schools and the Denison High school. In 1942, he entered the United States Army, serving overseas until May of 1945. In August, 1945 he was discharged and returned to Denison.

On Aug. 4, 1949 he was united in marriage to Vernette Hansen at Denison. They made their home on a farm in the Denison area.

Mr. Nehls was preceded in death by his mother and one brother, Roland.

Survivors include his wife, Vernette, two daughters, Diane (Mrs. Melvin Smith) of North Platte, Nebr., and Kathy, at home, his father, August Nehls of Denison, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, in the Zion Lutheran Church, with Reverend Robert Maschke officiating. Pallbearers were Larry Schmidt, Kenneth Steckelberg, Vernie Schmidt, Herman Meiners, Robert Juhl and Wilbur Chaney. Graveside military services were conducted by American Legion Post No. 8 of Denison. Interment was made in Crawford Heights Memory Garden with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Wiebke (Boyens) Maack (1875 - 1962)

Charter Oak - Mrs. Wiebke Maack, the daughter of Henry and Maria Johannsen Boyens, was born Dec. 24, 1875 in Schleswig Holstein, Germany in the town of Bergenhusen. She was also baptized there. In the year 1880, at the age of five, she came to America with her parents and was later confirmed in Denison by Pastor Stroburg.

On Feb. 18, 1896 she was married to Johannes Thun. To this union were born three children, Hilda, Hanna and Anna. Her husband died Oct. 4, 1905.

Later she married August Maack on March 2, 1908. They had four children, August, Martha, Herman and Lydia. There were also three stepchildren, Henry, Edna and Louis. Mr. Maack died in 1936.

Her membership in St. John's Lutheran church dates back to January 1939. For many years she was a member of the Ladies Aid Society of the congregation.

After years of illness she died Oct. 20 (1962) at the age of 86 years, 10 months and 26 days.

Survivors are the following children: Hilda, Mrs. Arthur Schoenfeldt, Hans Thun of Charter Oak; Anna, Mrs. Carl Hiller of Charter Oak; August Maack of Ricketts, Martha, Mrs. Walter Watke of Arion; Herman Maack of Denison, Lydia, Mrs. Eddie Eggert of Denison; the step-children, Henry Maack of Schleswig, Edna, Mrs. Art Naab of Charter Oak, and Louis Maack of Charter Oak; 17 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran church at Charter Oak. Words of comfort by Rev. O. R. Schlegelmilch. Comfort in music by William Ziesemar, organist. Pallbearers were Earl Hiller, Myron Maack, Ronald Maack, James Nemitz, Arlo Schoenfeld and James Watke. Interment was in Morgan township cemetery in Schleswig.

Wilhelmina Christina (Hamann) Nehls (1889 - 1977)

Wilhelmina Christina Nehls was born on October 27, 1889 at Washington Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of August and Anna Hamann. She died on August 2, 1977, at St. Anthony Regional Medical Center, Carroll, Iowa, at the age of 87.

As a young girl she was raised on the family farm in Crawford County, and received her education in the rural schools of the area. She was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith.

On April 26, 1911, Wilhelmina was united in marriage to Wilhelm Nehls at Denison, Iowa. Together they lived and worked on their farm in Nishnabotna Township. In 1940 they retired from the farm and moved to Denison. Wilhelmina and Wilhelm celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary before Wilhelm died in August, 1972.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Wilhelmina was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Survivors include: one daughter, Edna, Mrs. George Else of Schleswig; one son, Edwin of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. Also by one brother August Hamann of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 5, 1977, at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery also at Denison. The Rev. Gary Hoffstetter officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Edmund Haase, Clarence Koester, Bernie Jorgensen, Milford Lochmiller, Vincent Schneider and Walter R. Huebner.

William F.H. Nehls (1885 - 1972)

William F.H. Nehls, the son of Martin Nehls and his wife, Hanna nee Lochmiller, was born January 8, 1885 in Washington Township, Crawford County, Iowa. He was baptized in early youth and later confirmed in the Lutheran Faith.

On April 26, 1911 he was married to Wilhelmina Hamann and after their marriage they resided on the farm in Nishnabotna Township where Mr. Nehls was active in many civic and school affairs. At the age of 21 he served as Township Clerk at Buck Grove, School Director in Nishnabotna Township, REA Director, Secretary and Treasurer of the Manilla Lumber Yard, and he helped plant the evergreens around the Manilla Cemetery. In 1940 they came to live in Denison, and he worked for the Huebner Funeral Home for 10 years.

He was taken to the local hospital on July 13, where he passed away on August 4. Surviving his death are his widow, Wilhelmina Nehls; one daughter Edna, Mrs. George Else, of Schleswig, Iowa; and one son, Edwin of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two step grandchildren and five step great grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, August of Denison and two sisters Mrs. Rosena Renken of Lincoln, California and Mrs. Adehlia Joens of Carroll.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Rudolf and Barney, and one sister, Mrs. Emma Heiden.

Funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran Church at Denison on August 7, with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Hymns were sung by Henry Henningsen with Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as accompanist. Interment was made in the Lutheran Cemetery with the following acting as the pallbearers: Edmund Haase, Bernie Jorgensen, Clarence Koester, Milford Lochmiller, Virgil Nehls and Vincent Schneider. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Elmer Carl Schultz (1903 - 1986)

Elmer Carl Schultz was born on Oct. 3, 1903 in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Otto and Emma Huebner Schultz. He died May 17, 1986 at the Bishop Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebr., at the age of 82 years, six months and 14 days.

Elmer was raised on a family farm near Charter Oak. He was baptized on Nov. 8, 1903 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 1, 1917 at the St. John's Lutheran Church at Hanover Township. He received his formal education in the rural school near his home, St. John's Lutheran School in Charter Oak and later the Charter Oak High School.

Elmer was united in marriage to Adela Thies on Feb. 10, 1929 at St. John's Lutheran church in Charter Oak. Together they made their home on a farm near Charter Oak. Elmer retired from an active farming career in 1978. Elmer and Adela moved to Charter Oak in December of 1983.

In addition to his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by two brothers August and Louis, and one sister Marie Thies.

Survivors include his wife Adela of Charter Oak, one son Loren, and wife Carol of Denison, and one daughter Nadien of Omaha, Nebr. He is further survived by three grandchildren, one brother Herb Schultz of Sioux City, and two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Kuhlmann of Charter Oak, and Mable, Mrs. Herbert Kroll of Rodondo Beach, California, as well other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on May 20, at 1:30 p.m. at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter oak. Interment was in the St. John's Cemetery near Charter Oak. The Rev. Nathan Wasewitz and Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated at the services and graveside rites. The St. John's Ladies' Choir with Mrs. Darlene Clausen as organist provided music for the services. Hymns by the choir included Be Still My Soul and Behold A Host Arrayed In White. The recessional hymn for the services was Lift High The Cross. Pallbearers for the services were Alan Schulz, Arlyn Schulz, Lyle Schulz, Jim Schultz, James Schultz, and Herb Kuhlmann. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Elmer E. Greene (1909 - 1990)

The Rev. Elmer E. Greene was born February 25, 1909, at Marble Rock, Iowa, the son of Frank and Lena, nee Nieman, Greene. He was baptized and confirmed while the family lived In Canada. He attended grade school in Canada and was graduated from the Nashua, Iowa, High School, and from Concordia Seminary, Springfield, Illinois in 1936, after he vicared at Spring Fountain, Iowa, from 1934-35.

Rev. Greene worked under Synod's Candidate Fund from 1936-37 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sioux City, Iowa. He was ordained in May of 1937 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Buck Grove, Iowa.

On June 29, 1937, Rev. Greene was united in marriage with Mabel, nee Scheel, of Sioux City, Iowa, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sioux City. They were blessed with four children, Robert, Ruth, Marlene and Sheryl.

Rev. Greene organized Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Dow City, Iowa, and served the Buck Grove and Dow City parishes from 1937-1941. He then served at Trinity Lutheran, Jefferson, Iowa, 1941-1943; Bethlehem Lutheran, Sutherland, Iowa, 1943-1951; Peace Lutheran, West Bend, Iowa, 1951-1957; St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Mapleton, Iowa, 1957-1974.

He retired in 1974 and continued serving Immanuel Lutheran, rural Charter Oak, Iowa, which he had served as a vacancy while living in Mapleton and retired from there in September of 1989. In June of 1987 Rev. Greene and Mabel celebrated his 50th Anniversary In the ministry and their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

The Greene's had resided in Denison since 1974, and it was there at his home that Rev. Greene died Thursday morning, July 26, 1990. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 81 years, 5 months, and one day.

During his ministry of 52 years, Rev. Greene has served in various Iowa District West offices including; Circuit Counselor, District Youth Board and Social Services, District Walther League President from 1946-1948, and District LWML Counselor for eight years. Locally he was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Lutheran Laymens League, member and past president of the Denison Golden "K" Kiwanis Club and Lt. Governor of Division 12 of Kiwanis; past president of AARP, Pastoral Advisor of Eventide Auxiliary; and Volunteer Crawford County Hospital Auxiliary.

Rev. Greene was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Mable Greene of Denison, Iowa, one son Rev. Robert Greene and wife Jean of Round Rock, Texas, three daughters and their husbands, Ruth and Rev. William Couch of Knoxville, Tennessee, Marlene and Rev. Marvin Otto of North Little Rock, Arkansas, and Sheryl and Rev. Walter Anderson of Beaverton, Oregon, 14 grandchildren, one brother, Harry Greene of Nashua, Iowa, and two sisters, Mrs. Grace Bean of Nashua, Iowa, and Mrs. Myrtle Isley of Seattle, Washington. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 30, 1990, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Those conducting the services included the Rev. Dr. Richard G. Kapfer, Proclaiming Minister, the Rev. Kurt R Kaiser, Liturgist, the Rev. Philip E. Block, Lector, and Crucifer, Matthew Gosch. Martha Block served as Trumpeter and Karen Kahl as organist. The vocal selection for the clergy and congregation was "For All The Saints Who From Their Labors Rest". Congregational hymns were "Jerusalem Thou City Fair and High" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Honorary Escorts were attending Clergy and wives and the Denison Golden "K" Club and wives. Casket bearers included Mark Couch, David Greene, Steven Greene, Lawrence Greene, Linn Culley, and Wayne Young. Interment was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Elmer H. Wellendorf (1908 - 1997)

Elmer H. Wellendorf was born on a farm in Hayes Township, Ida County, Iowa, January 1, 1908, the son of Emil and Mary Brockman Wellendorf. He was raised in Ida County where he received his education being graduated from the Ida Grove High School.

On September 15, 1930, Elmer was united in marriage with Ruby Annette Winey at Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with five children, Virginia, Clarice, Glen, Robert and Donald. They made their home on a farm near Kiron later moving and residing in the Ida Grove area. In 1941 they moved to a farm northwest of Deloit, Iowa where he had since resided.

Ruby died January 20, 1975 and Elmer continued to reside on the farm until March 19th of this year when he entered the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa. Elmer was an advocate of education and had previously served on the Deloit School Board, having served as their president and was on the board when the Deloit School consolidated with the Denison and Kiron Schools. Hobbies that occupied his time included reading, keeping up with current events, watching sports and, in earlier years, he enjoyed fishing. Family was of utmost Importance to Elmer and he cherished his visits with his children and grandchildren.

Elmer died Tuesday morning, April 8, 1997, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 89 years, 3 months and 7 days.

Including his parents and his wife, Elmer was preceded in death by two brothers, Mangnus and Fred Wellendorf.

Those who remain to cherish his memory include five children, Virginia and her husband, Raymond Slechta of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Clarice Wellendorf of Davenport, Iowa, Glen Wellendorf and his wife, Edrie of Denison, Iowa, Robert Wellendorf and his wife, Judy of Elkhorn, Nebraska and Donald Wellendorf of Dallas, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ella Schelldorf of Holstein, Iowa and Iona and her husband, LaVerne Thraen of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 11, 1997, at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa, with family friend, the Rev. Joseph P. Boysen officiating. Music for the service was provided by Larry Boeck singing, "My Faith Looks Up To Thee" and "Lift High The Cross" with Ann Voggesser serving as organist. Serving as pallbearers were his grandchildren, Timothy, Randall and Kirk Slechta, Brian Wellendorf, Glenda Bielenberg, Kitty Caporale, Dennis, Daniel, Douglas, Robert II, Ronald, Bradley and Keri Wellendorf and Lisa Richards. Interment was in the Deloit Cemetery at Deloit, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Elna (Miller) Garbe (1909 - 2000)

Elna Garbe was born October 5, 1909, the daughter of Martin and Agnes Stender Miller. She died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, Sunday, January 9, 2000 at the age of ninety. Elna was born near Schleswig, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on December 19, 1909 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak and later confirmed at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. She received her education in a rural school, near her home and the Schleswig Community School.

After completing her education, Elna helped her family until her marriage to Herman Garbe on December 12, 1937 at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. The couple settled on a farm owned by Martin Millers where they farmed until 1976, when they retired and moved to Schleswig. In the early 1990's the couple moved to Denison.

Elna was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. She was a loving and caring wife who loved the farm life, where she helped with milking cows and other farm work. In her leisure time, Elna enjoyed knitting and tatting.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Herbert Miller. Survivors include her husband, Herman Garbe of Denison; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, January 12, 2000 at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L. C. Gebhardt officiated the service and grave side services held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great thou Art". Those serving as pallbearers were: Jeremy McMinemee, Louis Hargens Jr., Dennis Backhaus, Robert Meyer, John Dorfler and Mark Lewis. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Elsa Amanda (Beeck) Jepsen (1905 - 1999)

Elsa Amanda Jepsen was born July 13, 1905, the daughter of Christian and Anna Lafrentz Beeck. She died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, Thursday, April 29, 1999 at the age of ninety-three. Elsa was born in Burgauf Fehmarn, Germany and was baptized in Christ on September 17, 1905 by Rev. Bielenberg and later confirmed on March 27, 1920 by Rev. Schultz at the St. Nikolai Evangelical Lutheran Church in Burgauf Fehmarn, Germany.

She came to America in 1922 and lived with her sister, Dora in Schleswig for two years, before her marriage to Edward R. Jepsen on September 24, 1924 at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison, Iowa by Rev. Frehse. The couple settled on the family farm east of Charter Oak and later purchased a farm northwest of Charter Oak. They remained living on the family farm until they retired and moved into Charter Oak in 1970. Elsa moved to Eventide in March of 1993, due to failing health.

Elsa was a devoted member of St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, their Ladies Aid and the Charter Oak Clubetts. She was a very loving and caring mother and grandmother. Elsa loved crocheting, working in her vegetable and flower gardens and spiritual music. In her leisure time she enjoyed polka music and socializing in a game of cards.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edward in 1973, one daughter, Delores in 1929, one great-grandson, Austin Jepsen in 1994, one son-in-law, Bob Flink, one brother, Fred, and two sisters, Dora Jepsen and Anna Heinrick. Survivors include three sons, Edward F. Jepsen and his wife, Dorothy of Charter Oak; Arnold Jepsen and his wife, Florence of Schleswig; Freddie Jepsen and his wife, Shirleen of Charter Oak; three daughters, Norma Henningsen and her husband, Mario of Denison; Leanna Hopp and her husband, Donald of Charter Oak; Marjorie Flink of Lincoln, Nebraska; twenty-five grandchildren and forty-three great- grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Lillian Beeck of Denison; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, May 3, 1999 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa, Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig, Iowa. Art Beeck provided the service music of "Going Home" and "On Eagles Wings" and congregational hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee". Those serving as pallbearers were: Christian Johnson Jr., Dan Henkenius, Dennis G. Jepsen, Rodney Flink, John Jepsen and Troy Hopp. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.
