Ida (Goerner) Seils (1899 - 1986)
Ida Seils was born on November 20, 1899, at Castana, Iowa, the daughter of Fraanz and Emma Lipsky Goerner. She died Sunday evening, June 1986, at her home in Schleswig, at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 11 days.Ida was raised on a farm east of Charter Oak. She received her formal education in the parochial school in Charter Oak and later the public school.
On August 22, 1921, she was united in marriage to Gustav Seils. They made their home together on a farm north of Ricketts. Following retirement from farming in 1951, they made their home in Schleswig. Gustav died in June of 1961. Following his death, Ida continued to make her home in Schleswig. Ida was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and the Immanuel Lutheran Ladies Aid.
In addition to her parents and husband, Ida was preceded in death by her brother Fred, two sisters, Gertrude Bahnsen and Alma Martin, two step-sisters, Martha Rickert and Clara Listamann and her half-brother Adolf Schreiber.
Survivors include one son, Loren and wife Lorraine of Charter Oak, three grandchildren, Douglas Seils, Renee Neddermeyer and Merry Petersen and six great-grandchildren. She is further survived by one sister, Martha Seils of Denison, her half-sister, Marie Dunlop of Sioux City, her step-brother Carl Schreiber of Ricketts and her half-brother Herman Schreiber of San Diego, California, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 4, 1986, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Richard Nelson officiated at the services and graveside rites. The Immanuel Lutheran Ladies Choir with Mrs. Marlene Hight as organist provided music for the services. Hymns for the services included "Asleep in Jesus" and "Be Still My Soul". Serving as pallbearers for the services were Reynold Goerner, Robert Schreiber, Erwin Riessen, Scott Hansen, DeWayne Sonksen and Gailen Meseck.

Johanna Augusta (Miller) Mohr (1883 - 1978)
Johanna Augusta Mohr was born May 18, 1883 near Schleswig, Iowa the daughter of Henry and Augusta Miller. She died May 17, 1978 at Horn Memorial Hospital, Ida Grove, the age of 94. Johanna was raised on a family farm and received her formal education in the country schools.She was united in marriage to Henry Wieck on Feb. 26, 1904 at Schleswig. Henry died in 1907.
Johanna was again united in marraige on May 18, 1909 to Peter Mohr at Schleswig. They made their home in Lyon County in 1910 and lived there for ten years. They returned to the Schleswig area farming in Ida County until 1935 when they retired and moved to Schleswig. Peter died in 1965 and Johanna has continued to make Schleswig her home.
In addition to her parents and her husbands, she was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.
Survivors include, two daughters, Rose, Mrs. Erwin Bendixen of Schleswig, Lillie, Mrs. Howard Hirth, of Ann Arbor, Mich., one son, Henry Wieck of Ida Grove and one step son, Harvey Mohr of Schleswig. Also by four grandchildren, six great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held May 20, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Pallbearers included, James Else, Dean Wieck, E.W. Claussen, Lorenz Petersen, Leonard Hollander and Herbert Rickert. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Johanna (Kvis) Jakso (1883 - 1983)
Johanna Jakso, daughter of John and Marie Kvis was born on January 20, 1883 in Porici, County Beneshov in Czechoslovakia. She died on Monday morning, February 21, 1983 at the Denison Care Centerm, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 100 years.Johanna was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical and Reformed Church. She received her entire education in the community where she was born.
In 1907 she was united in marriage to John Jakso in Czechoslovakia in the same church where she was baptized and confirmed.
Johanna and John moved to America in 1911 making their home in New York City. Later in 1915, they moved to Schleswig after Mr. Jakso accepted a position in the community where he had been sent to install electrical light plants. Since that time, the Jakso family has made Schleswig their home.
Johanna for many years worked with her husband in the office of Iowa Public Service in Schleswig. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and a member of the United Church of Christ Women's Guild. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge for many years.
Mr. Jakso passed away in 1954. Since that time, Johanna has continued to make her home in Schleswig, In the last month, she entered the Denison Care Center due to failing health.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, two sons, Henry and John, two daughters-in-law, two sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include two daughters, Henrietta and her husband Ray Manship of Van Horne, Iowa and Jeanette and her husband Ernie Grell of Schleswig. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Sharon, Mrs. Charles Hill of Carpentersville, Illinois, Charles Jakso of Van Nuys, California and Patricia, Mrs. W. Dan Benton of San Antonio. Texas, four great-grandchildren, Michelle and Marty Leedahl, Jeffery and Kenneth Jakso and two step great-grandchildren, Robert and Tia Hill as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 23, 1983, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Mrs. Rubie Kastner served as soloist with Mrs. Evelyn Johnson as organist. Serving as pallbearers were Eugene Huelsman, Richard Fredericks, Ralph Struck, Roland Struck, Dale Reese and Hans Petersen.

John A. Krueger (1888 - 1977)
John A. Krueger, son of Frederick and Caroline Heiden, Krueger was born August 25, 1888 in Stockholm Township Crawford County Iowa.He attended the Stockholm Lutheran School and was confirmed in St. John's Lutheran. He lived at home and helped his father on the farm and then moved to Deloit to make his home. He began working at the lumber yard and the elevator.
He was united in marriage to Miss Lois Ransom, October 1, 1933 in Deloit. Before he retired he was a beekeeper. They had made their home in Deloit until he entered the Eventide Home in Denison on February 16, 1977. He passed away at Eventide on August 31, 1977 at the age of 89 years and six days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother William, three sisters, Anna Judy, Alma Krueger and Emma Schlimmer.
He is survived by his wife, Lois, nieces and nephews; Edna, Mrs. Ernest Keesling of Deloit; Eston Judy of Sioux City; Wilma Reimer of Charter Oak; Duane Krueger, of Deloit; Nola Foster of Lake View; Ella Lutz of Omaha, Nebraska; Reva Riessen of Schleswig; Norman Krueger of Denison; Lola Liggett of Monticello; Arlo Schlimmer of Harpers Ferry;. Raynor Schlimmer of Cedar Falls; Ross Schlimmer of Colorado Springs; Adrian Schlimmer of Cedar Falls; Phllis Hinge of Waterloo; grand nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Services were held Saturday, September 3, 1977 at 1 p.m. Pallbearers were Duane Krueger, Eston Judy, Raynor Schlimmer, Earl Keesling and Ervin Keesling. Burial was in the Neola Township Cemetery.

John D. Moeller (1878 - 1975)
Funeral services for John D. Moeller, oldest citizen of the Schleswig community, were held Wednesday morning, August 27, 1975, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, with the Rev. Fred Moore officiating.A duet composed of Mrs. G.M. Johnson and Mrs. Ernie Grell sang " The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art". They were accompanied on the organ by Mrs. John Evers.
Mr. John D. Moeller, son of John C. Moeller and Jessie, nee Grobmann, was born on December 23, 1878, in Crawford County, Otter Creek Township. He was baptized and confirmed in Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church.
On February 24, 1909, he was united in marriage to Freda Jensen. They started farming in Otter Creek Township and resided at the same place until the time of his death.
For many years he showed cattle and received numerous ribbons and honors. The height of his ambition was reached in 1931 when he received the Grand Champion Award in the Chicago International Livestock Show with his load of Herefords.
He passed away Sunday morning, August 24, 1975, after being hospitalized one week at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. He reached the age of 96 years, 8 months and 1 day.
He was preceded in death by his wife Freda in 1962, his parents, two sons Dr. Hugo C. Moeller of San Francisco, California in 1968, George A. Moeller of Schleswig in 1971, three grandchildren, and brothers August, William, Arnold, Oscar and Robert, and one sister Dora.
Surviving are two daughters Jessie, Mrs. Walter Jaacks of Denison, and Louise, Mrs. Leslie J. Hinrichsen of Ute, one son John H. Moeller of Schleswig, six grandchildren, five great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many relatives and friends.
Honorary bearers were C. H. Gierstorf, Bart Bielenberg, George V. Else and E. W. Claussen. Bearers were Dennis Moeller, Louis Moeller, Willis Jaacks, Tom Flagge, Palmer Moeller and Arlo Jensen. Burial was made in Morgan Cemetery.

John Henry Baeth (1894 - 1993)
John Henry Baeth, age 98, of Schleswig, died Thursday, March 11, 1993, at Denison, Iowa.Services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with Pastor James Schatz officiating. Dorothy Jessen was the organist and Rubie Kastner, the soloist, singing "In The Garden" and "Rock of Ages". Burial was in Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig.
Mr. Baeth was born December 17, 1894, to Hans and Marie (Witthahn) Baeth in Otto (Otter Creek?) Township near Schleswig, Iowa. He farmed and resided in the Schleswig community, moving into the town of Schleswig in 1952. He was the sexton of Morgan Township Cemetery for seven years.
John married Josie Brockmann February 7, 1917, at Schleswig. She died in March of 1956. He married Loretta Streck in 1958 at Schleswig. He had been a resident of the Eventide Nursing Home at Denison since 1985.
He was a member of the United Church of Christ at Schleswig. He was a member of the Morgan Township Cemetery Board from 1952 until 1978. He was a past member of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Board in Schleswig and a past member of the Crawford County Federal Land Bank.
Survivors include two daughters, Lorraine Christensen of Dow City, Iowa and Lucille and her husband, Ray Jepsen of Schleswig; a stepson, Wayne Streck of Wisconsin; a sister-in-law, LaVonne Baeth of Moorhead, Iowa; six grandchildren and their spouses, Kenneth and Judy Christensen, Lois and Mike Riley, Dean and Judy Christensen, Larry and Mary Jepsen, Joan and Eldon Paulsen and Loren and Janice Jepsen; 22 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his wives, he was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, a son-in-law, Herbert Christensen, nine brothers and five sisters.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Christensen, Loren Jepsen, Orville Johannsen, Larry Jepsen, Lorenz Schultz and John Lintin. Arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter-Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.

John Jess Lorensen (1896 - 1987)
John Jess Lorensen was born on July 16, 1896, in Washington Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Jess and Anna Thoem Lorensen. He died at the Denison Health Care Center in Denison, Iowa, on April 30, 1987, at the age of 90 years, 9 months and 14 days.He was baptized as an infant and later was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Buck Grove. He spent his early years on the family south of Buck Grove. John received his formal education at the Washington Township School near his home.
John was drafted into the Army and entered the service on September 4, 1918, and was sent to Camp Dodge where he was a member of the Corps of Engineers, 163rd Depot Brigade. He remained there for two months before being sent to Camp Greenleaf, then to Oglethorpe and on to Camp Forrest, Georgia.
John married Olga Baur on November 14, 1923, and to this union three children were born: Elmer, Robert and Virginia. He worked off and on as a farmhand for 32 years as well as carpentry, plumbing and various other occupations later.
John was baptized into the Baptist faith on December 4, 1966, at the First Baptist Church of Denison, Iowa. After retirement, John lived in Denison and in 1979, he entered the Denison Health Care Center where he resided until his death.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two children, Robert and Virginia; three sisters, Anna Else, Emma and Rosa Lorensen; and two brothers, Frank and Louie (Ludwig) Lorensen.
Survivors include one son, Elmer and his wife; three grandchildren and one step-grandchild; one sister, Adelia Rosburg of Charter Oak; two brothers, Emil of Charter Oak and Herman and his wife of Jefferson; also surviving are several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday May 4, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Denison with burial in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Rev. Warren Wilson officiated at the services. Pallbearers included James Pester, Allen Rosburg, Michael Rosburg, Herman Rosburg, Dennis Rosburg and DuWayne Andresen. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

John Johannsen (1880 - 1974)
Funeral services for John Johannsen were held Saturday, February 2, 1974, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff officiating. Miss Becky Ratzlaff was the organist. Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. Gunnar Johnson sang " In the Garden" and "Rock of Ages".John Johannsen was born to Peter Johannsen and his wife Gyte, nee Hanson, on July 7, 1880 in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa.
He married Louise Backhaus February 21, 1906 and they farmed, moving to Schleswig in 1919. In 1969, his wife, Louise passed away. About a year later, Mr. Johannsen moved to Eventide Home, Denison to make his home there. A son and a daughter were born to them. Peter E. Johannsen passed away one year after his mother in May of 1970, leaving John with his only daughter, Ann.
Mr. Johannsen was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and up to the time of his death observed the partaking of the sacrament of Holy Communion regularly. He has served on the Church Council and at one time was president of the congregation. He served as Crawford County Supervisor for a couple of years in his younger days. He died Thursday, January 31, 1974 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital.
He is survived by his daughter, Ann Powers; three grandchildren, Murlin Johannsen, Charter Oak; Mrs. Vern Fish, Colorado; and Mrs. Dennis Shogren, Illinois; one brother, Hans of Ida Grove; six great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his son, four sisters and two brothers.
Bearers were. Hugo Jensen, Robert Wiebers, Burdell Jensen, Harry Backhaus, Freddie Backhaus and Wilbert Johannsen. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Joseph G. Schlimgen (1894 - 1987)
Joseph G. Schlimgen, 93, of Schleswig died Tuesday, November 17, 1987, at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Odebolt. Funeral services were held Saturday morning, November 21, 1987, at 10:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove with the Rev. R. W. Phillips officiating. Burial was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3930 and American Legion Post 645 of Schleswig. The rosary was recited by the parish Friday evening at the Christensen Funeral Home in Ida Grove.Mr. Schlimgen was born April 4, 1894, in Muenster, Texas. He had lived in the Schleswig area since 1917 and prior to that in Parkston, South Dakota. He was a veteran of World War I.
He married Ellen A. Rohwer November 26, 1919, at Ida Grove. She died January 21, 1984, at Odebolt. Mr. Schlimgen worked at the Hollander Garage in Schleswig and was Standard Oil bulk plant agent for many years. He served on the Schleswig Town Council and was a former mayor.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Katherine) Risberg of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; two sons, Theodore of Schleswig and Philip of Salem, South Carolina; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jubel F. Hedstrom (1896 - 1984)
Jubel F. Hedstrom was born on a farm north of Kiron, Iowa, April 4, 1896, the son of John and Mary Larson Hedstrom. He was raised on the family farm and received his formal education in the rural schools. After his schooling and prior to entering the service, he farmed with his family. Jubel entered the service February 25, 1918, and served in the United States Army during World War I, with much of his time being spent overseas. Following his discharge June 9, 1919, he returned to the Kiron area and farmed.On February 17, 1926, Jubel was married to Florence Johnson at her parents' farm home. To this union six children were born, Gerald, Evangeline, Bueal, Burdette, Maydelle and Evelyn.
The Hedstroms farmed in the Kiron area until retiring and moving to Kiron in 1963. Jubel died Tuesday morning, December 31, 1984, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison after suffering an apparent heart attack. At the time of his death, he had attained the age of 89 years, 8 months and 27 days. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kiron and the American Legion Post 383, Kiron.
Jubel was preceded in death by his parents, one son Burdette, one brother, Paul Hedstrom, two sisters, Ethel Meleen and Mabel Lindquist, and one half sister, Pearl Lindgren.
He is survived by his wife Florence Hedstrom of Kiron, five children, Gerald Hedstrom of Ida Grove, Evangeline Hedstrom of Fairfax, Virginia, Bueal Hedstrom of Denison, Maydelle, Mrs. Harvey Oslund of Parsippany, New Jersey and Evelyn, Mrs. Jim Moller of Denison, fourteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Ruth Bergin of Ida Grove. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 3, 1986, at the First Baptist Church in Kiron, with the Rev. Roger Anderson officiating. Music for the service was provided by Lewellyn and Wanda Larson singing "Jesus Led Me All the Way" and "Ivory Palaces", and the congregation singing "Great is Thy Faithfulness". Mrs. John W. Larson served as organist for the service. Casket bearers included his grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Brett Moller, Paul Hedstrom, Alan Hedstrom, Dawson Oslund, Brent Lindgren, Irvin Larsen, David Crippin, Douglas Lacey, Rodney Lindberg, Donald Lockman and Richard Parkes. Graveside Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 383, Kiron. Interment was in the Kiron Cemetery at Kiron.

Julius C. Suhr (1894 - 1990)
Julius C. Suhr was born Feb. 18, 1894, on a farm west of Denison. He was the son of Christian and Marie Odefey Suhr. He died May 27, 1990, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 96 years.He was Baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran Faith in Charter Oak. At the age of six, he moved with his family to a farm north west of Dow City where he received his education through the eighth grade.
As a young man he worked for a garage and filling station in Omaha and later worked for O. W. Nelson Hardware in Arion. In addition to his employment in Omaha and Arion, he was employed by the Northwestern Railroad as a signal lamplighter.
In July of 1918, he entered the Army and was stationed at Camp Gordon, Ga. In August of that year he was sent overseas to serve his country as a Courier in France and Germany. September 1, 1919, after his discharge, Julius returned home and learned the printing trade from an uncle in South Dakota. He was later employed by the Fischer Brothers Garage in Ute.
Julius was united in marriage to Selma Fischer on Oct. 4, 1921, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and their lives were blessed with two daughters. As a family, they made their home in Ute until 1927, when they moved to Charter Oak where Julius was employed by the Barney Remmes Garage. In 1930, he began farming four and one half miles west of Ute. He remained on the farm until 1958, when he retired and moved to Denison where he worked as a carpenter and painter, which he continued until retiring at the age of 79.
In May of 1976, his wife, Selma died, and in June of that year Julius moved into the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where he remained until his death.
In addition to his family, he occupied his spare time with many hobbies of which, gardening was of special interest to him. In recent years, he enjoyed making hand rolled beads. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
In addition to his wife; he was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Fred, Arthur and August; one sister, Christene Hanneman; and three grandchildren, Glenda, Rodney and Gwenda Eggink.
His survivors include two daughters, Maxine Eggink and her husband, Peter of Omaha, Neb., and Viola Rath and her husband, Lorin of Stockton, Calif.; also five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran Church at 3 p.m., Thursday, with Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiating. Interment was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Honorary pallbearers were Ben Lueigens and Herbert W. Fischer. Pallbearers included Randall P. Eggink, Ralph Marten, Herbert Koeppen, Marvin Stock, Herbert E. Fischer and Rodger D. Fischer. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner & Sons' Funeral Service at Denison.

Karen ( Steiniche) Rasmussen (1893 - 1987)
Karen, daughter of Jacobus and Anna Jensen Steiniche, was born April 11, 1893 in Gradstrup (Jutland), Denmark. She was one of 12 children in the Jacobus Steiniche family.When Karen was 17 she and her brother, Ingvart, emigrated to the United States. They lived briefly in Saginaw, Mich., with their brother, Verne, and his family. They all eventually settled in San Francisco where Karen met her future husband, Peder Rasmussen. They were united in marriage on Sept. 8, 1914.
In the summer of 1915, they moved to Omaha, Neb., where Peder was employed as a carpenter. In 1917 the family moved to Manilla, la., where Peder later established the Rasmussen Lumber Company. After Peder's death in 1954 Karen continued to live in her own home in Manilla until 1985 when she moved to the Manilla Manor Nursing Home. She died there early Friday morning, Aug. 14, 1987 at the age of 94 years, 4 months and 3 days.
Besides her husband, Karen was preceded in death by her parents; by her brothers and sisters; by a granddaughter, Connie Rasmussen; by a grandson, Warren Prosin; by a great-grandson, Kurt Martin; and by a son-in-law, Warren Prosin.
Karen is survived by her 10 children: Anna and her husband, Harold Justice, of Bella Vista, Ark.; Leo Rasmussen and his wife, Grace, of Manilla; Elna and her husband, Lucien Bender, of Bella Vista, Ark.; Mable Prosin, of Atlanta, Ga.; Otto Rasmussen and his wife, Hazel, of Manilla; Betty and her husband, Bob Harvey, of Corpus Christi, Texas; Jack Rasmussen and his wife, Ellen, of Manilla; Bob Rasmussen and his wife, Vivian, of Manilla; Doris and her husband, Kenneth Loeffelman, of St. Louis, Mo.; and Carmen and her husband, Jack Heck, of Bella Vista, Ark.; by 34 grandchildren; by 53 great-grandchildren; and by two great-great-grandchildren.

Katharina Marie (Ullrich) Kusch (1898 - 1973)
Funeral services for Katharina Kusch were held Friday, February 23, 1973 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with the Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The congregation sang "What God Ordains Is Always Good" and "I Know My Redeemer Lives".Katharina Marie Ullrich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Ullrich, was born in Schleswig, Germany on August 6, 1898. She came to Schleswig, Iowa in 1923 and was married to Ernst Kusch in 1924. She lived in this community most of the time.
She died Monday, February 19, 1973 at her home at Oceanside, California where she had moved because of failing health. She attained to 74 years, 6 months, and 13 days.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ernst who died in 1965 at Schleswig, and two sons Fritz and Lucas.
Survivors include five children, Ernst Kusch of Omaha, Nebraska, Edna Paris of Oceanside, California, Esther Hawley of Decatur, Illinois, Joan Schwartz of North Platte, Nebraska and William of Oceanside, California and six grandchildren. Laura Alvina Dorothea (Jetter) Volquartsen (1899 - 1996)
Laura Alvina Dorothea Volquartsen was born September 10, 1899, on a farm in Iowa Township, Crawford County, Iowa, to Johann and Caroline Bohnsack Jetter, and died Wednesday, March 27, 1996, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison. She was ninety-six years old.While still an infant, the family moved to a farm in Greely Township, Shelby County. Here she was baptized on November 10, 1900, by Rev. Martens of the Lutheran Church. Laura received her education in a rural school in Greely Township.
On April 26, 1924, she was united in marriage with John L. Volquartsen at the Methodist parsonage in Carroll, Iowa. He passed away November 21,1973, in Harlan, Iowa. The Volquartsens moved to Arion shortly after their marriage where Mr. Volquartsen was foreman for the Northwestern Railroad. Later, due to his work, they moved to Woodbine where they lived for a number of years before returning to Arion.
Mrs. Volquartsen worked at various jobs in and around Denison during her lifetime. She loved gardening and her flowers. Her mother taught her how to crochet and quilt and many a relative and friends were recipients of her gifts. Laura loved to travel and had visited many places from east to west coast. She was very devoted to her parents, brothers and sisters, always helping in time of need.
The Volquartsens had no children of their own, but raised her nephew, Duane Jetter, who was a baby when his mother passed away. Mrs. Volquartsen was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, six brothers: Johnny, Henry, Louie, Bill, Herman, and Alvin Jetter, four sisters: Emma, Marie Wendt, Amanda Larson, and Minnie Zahn.
She is survived by her brother, Carl and his wife Mary Jetter of Sioux City, her foster son, Duane Jetter of Boone, two sisters-in-law, Marianna Maupin of Denison and Evelyn Jetter of Wall Lake, cousins, and many nieces and nephews, along with a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 30, 1996 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Larry Lemke officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Sherry Ketelsen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Asleep in Jesus" and congregational hymn "Amazing Grace". Honorary pallbearers were: Verle McCutcheon, Arnold Detlefson, Darrell Ketelsen, John L. Garrett and Merlyn Schnoor. Pallbearers were: Vernon Greder, Robert Jetter, Philip Ferrone, Roger Jetter, Daniel Jetter and Joel Maupin. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence Donald Johns (1898 - 1979)
Lawrence Donald Johns was born April 25, 1896 at Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Cecil and Alice Wiggs Johns. He died Feb. 5, 1979 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 82.Lawrence was raised in Mapleton where he attended the public schools. He apprenticed under his father in Mapleton for the barbering profession. At the completion of his training he established a barber shop and home in Schleswig.
On June 18, 1927, Lawrence was united in marriage to Edna Ehler at Mapleton. They made their home in Schleswig until the early 1950's when they moved to Denison. Later upon their retirement Lawrence returned to Schleswig. For the past number of years he has made his home in Denison. Lawrence served in the U.S. Army during World War I. He was a member of the Schleswig American Legion.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Survivors include, his wife Edna of Denison, one daughter, Joan, Mrs. Richard Carl of Harlan and two grandsons, Curtis and Bruce.
Funeral services were held Feb. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Pallbearers and full military rites were provided by the Schleswig American Legion and V.F.W. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Lena Wilhelmina (Rosburg) Goslar (1898 - 1989)
Lena Wilhelmina Goslar, the daughter of Adolph and Elizabeth Stammer Rosburg, was born on March 31, 1898, near Ricketts, Ia., and died on May 18, 1989, at St. Lukes Medical Center in Sioux City at the age of 91 years. Lena grew up on the family farm, attended a rural school and finished her education in the Immanuel Lutheran School in Soldier Township.She helped on the family farm and on Dec. 12, 1917, she and Edward Goslar of Charter Oak, were united in marriage at St. John's Lutheran parsonage in Charter Oak. This union was blessed with nine children. Edward and Lena lived in the Berne and Ute area all their married life. They retired from farming in 1955, but continued to live on the family farm. Edward died on Dec. 16, 1988, and Lena continued to live on the farm.
Lena was baptized as an infant and on March 31, 1912, was confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and loved the out-of-doors: her garden and flowers. She also enjoyed crocheting.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Edward; a number of brothers and sisters, several in infancy; one daughter, Audrey Klockgether; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; one great-grandson and one son-in-law, Alfred Sievers.
Survivors include her children: Lola Mae and her husband, Herbert Sievers of Ute, Wilma Sievers of Kiron, Phillip Goslar and his wife, Leona of Ute, Irma and her husband, La Vera Wessel of Ricketts, Lois Jean Goslar of Ute, Edward C. Goslar and his wife, Lois of Ute, Shirley and her husband, Norman Gosch of Ute and Ronald Goslar and his wife, Lou Anna of Ute. Also surviving are a son-in-law, Henry Klockgether of Charter Oak; 26 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one sister, Maria Leeper of Mapleton; one sister-in-law, Selma Rosburg of Charter Oak and one brother-in-law, Otto Goslar of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Vicar Carl Eckhoff officiated at the services with interment in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery at Charter Oak. Mrs. Judy Eckhoff was organist and Mrs. Angela Gebhardt was soloist. Selections were "Amazing Grace" and "I'm But a Stranger Here." The congregational hymn was "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." Honorary pallbearers were Richard Sievers, Gary Goslar, Steven Wessel and Gregg Wessel. Serving as active pallbearers were Larry Sievers, Myron Sievers, Mark Goslar, Randy Wessel, Chad Goslar, Todd Klockgether, Timothy Goslar and Brad Gosch. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak.

Leo Adolph Bruhn (1899 - 1989)
Leo Adolph Bruhn was born Nov. 3, 1899, to Peter and Maria Fick Bruhn. He was baptized in the year 1903, and confirmed in 1916 at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Charter Oak, la.On Nov. 29, 1925, he married Helena Brohm at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Mapleton. To this union was born one son, Dale, and a daughter, Corinne. They farmed for many years in Soldier Township near Ricketts until 1965. They then moved to Manning, where they managed the Manning Plaza Nursing home, retiring at the end of the year, 1974, moving to Mapleton, Jan. 1, 1975.
He was presently a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church at Mapleton. He faithfully and willingly served his church in such capacities as a member of the Board of Elders, Board of Trustees and property committee.
Leo is survived by his wife, Helena; his son, Dale and his wife, Ruth; and his daughter, Corinne and her husband, Robert Friedrichsen of Marshfield, Wis.; nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; a brother, Irwin of Denison; ! and a sister, Mrs. Hilda Brockman of Mountain Home, Ark.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Kathy; five brothers and two sisters. Leo died at the age of 89 years, 11 months and 17 days on Friday, Oct. 20, 1989, at Mapleton, la.
Funeral services were held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church at Mapleton with Pastor Les Kimball officiating. Musical selections were "Nearer My God To Thee," "Ten Thousand Times Ten Thousand" and "The Strife is O'er" by Mrs. Norma Jean Dose, organist and the congregation singing. Pallbearers were grandchildren: Alan Bruhn, Byron Bruhn, Evan Bruhn, Gary Beardmore, Rodney Friedrichsen and Bryan Friedrichsen. Honorary pallbearers were grandchildren: Cindy Kuehl, Debra Woodward, Terry Friedrichsen and Cathy Beardmore. Interment was in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Mapleton. Walter Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Leona K. (Gluesing) Grill (1893 - 1988)
Leona K. Grill was born May 9, 1893 in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Ia., the daughter of Reimer and Sophia Grill Gluesing and died Jan. 28, 1988 at the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in Manilla, at the age of 94.Leona was baptized in infancy, and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith at an early age at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where she was a life long member.
On Feb. 16, 1916, Leona was united in marriage to Henry Grill and the Lord blessed them with five children: Raymond, Adela, Marvin, Arlo and Ruby.
Leona was a devoted wife, a loving mother and a Christian who gave of her life in making others happy. On August 13, 1949, her husband Henry died, and Leona remained in her home in Denison until November of 1980, when ill health forced her to move to the Manilla Manor in Manilla where she resided until her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Marvin (in infancy); her husband, Henry; two brothers, Alfred and Arthur, both of Denison; and one sister, Martha (in infancy).
Survivors include two sons: Raymond and his wife, Hazel of Canon City, Colo., and Arlo and his wife June of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters: Adela and her husband, Conrad Carlton of St. Louis, Mo. and Ruby Grill of Dayton, Ohio. Also surviving are two granddaughters: Michele, Mrs. Robert Adair of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Maridee, Mrs. John Hammond of Phoenix, Ariz. Five great granddaughters: Debra, Killeen and Annie Adair of Albuquerque, N.M., and Karie and Erin Adair of Phoenix, Ariz.; several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Reverend Kurt Kaiser, Pastor at Zion officiated the service with grave side rites recited at the Morgan Township Cemetery. Mrs. Darold Kahl served as organist for Henry Henningsen as soloist singing "Nearer My God To Thee," "Be Still My Soul" and "How Great Thou Art." Serving as pallbearers were: Fred Clements, Russell Hyde, Jim Hyde, Robert C. Reimer, George Maack and Clyde McCollough. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Leonora Cecilia (Stender) Miller (1890 - 1974)
Leonora Cecilia Miller, nee Stender, passed away at 6:15 a.m. May 11, 1974, at Willow Dale Nursing Home, Battle Creek, Iowa, where she had made her home for the past months. She attained the age of 83 years, 5 months and 13 days.The daughter of the late August and Emma nee Dohrmann, Stender, she was born to them on November 24, 1890.
She married Willie Miller on May 31, 1911 and they farmed in the Schleswig area. Mr. Miller passed away in 1959. Besides being preceded in death by her husband, she was also preceded by one sister and three brothers. She was a longtime member of the United Church of Christ.
Survivors include her daughters, Mrs. Edwin Hargens, Mildred, and Mrs. Arthur Schultz, Melita; two grandsons, Marlowe and Lloyd Schultz and two great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 14, 1974, at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig, Iowa, with Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff officiating. Miss Becky Ratzlaff was the organist and accompanied Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. G. M. Johnson as they sang "Heaven is My Home" and "Nearer My God to Thee". Bearers were Allen Janssen, Herbert Miller, Marlowe Schultz, Frank Jensen, Lloyd Schultz and James Stern. Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig.

Leo William Hopp (1895 - 1975)
Leo William Hopp, son of Carl Hopp and his wife Henrietta Wittkopp,was born in Charter Oak Township June 1, 1895 and died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Sunday, January 26, 1975. He attained to 79 years, 7 months and 25 days.He was married to Caroline Rix December 29, 1915, by Pastor Runge. The couple farmed for a number of years and retired to Schleswig in 1947. For 20 years he continued to sell seed to the farmers. He was active in community services, being a member of the town council for a number of years. He was very active in the Lutheran Church. He served as financial secretary and also as president of the congregation. He held membership also in the Men's Club, the Aquila Priscilla Guild, and the Voters' Assembly. He was both baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by one daughter Gladys and one grandson Eugene. The family consisted of five brothers and four sisters.
He is survived by his widow Caroline; four children, Mildred, wife of Elmer Bohlmann of Schleswig, Edwin Hopp of Charter Oak, Loren Hopp of Hudson, Wisconsin and Lavina Krenmeyer of Seymour, Illinois; sixteen grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, January 28, 1975, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with Rev. F.A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The Immanuel Lutheran Ladies Choir sang "Asleep in Jesus" and the congregation sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Pallbearers were: Byron Bahrenfus, Paul Briggle, Edgar Meseck, Vernon Bielow, Alven Hopp and Harold Schrieber. Interment was made in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Lewis Chris Schmidt (1891 - 1976)
Lewis Chris Schmidt, son of Henry and Bertha Wilke Schmidt, was born on a farm in Goodrich Township on June 27, 1891, and died Jan. 26, 1976, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital, at the age of 84 years, 6, months, and 29 days. Mr. Schmidt was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended rural schools.On Jan. 21, 1914, he was united in marriage to Frieda Schurke in Denison. They settled on a farm. Mr. Schmidt was a trustee of Otter Creek Township, where he farmed until retiring in 1964, at which time they moved to Denison. Mrs. Schmidt died Oct. 21, 1968. He continued to live in his home in Denison until about a year ago when he entered Eventide, due to ill health.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Frieda, two brothers, George and Robert, and a sister, Emma (Mrs. Wm. Schurke).
Survivors include his sons, Arlo and Virgil, both of Denison, four grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Reverend Robert Maschke officiating. Pallbearers were Lodean Schmidt, Jimmy Schmidt, Walter Miller, Harry Petersen, Octavus Grill, and Kenneth Thams. Interment was made in Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig, with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Lillian Emma Katherine (Ruberg) Walde (1897 - 1984)
Lillian Emma Katherine Walde was born on a farm in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, April 23, 1897, the daughter of Johannes and Minnie Hinrichsen Ruberg. She was baptized June 9, 1899, and on April 16, 1911, was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. With exception of four years living in or near Deloit, Lillian was raised in Goodrich Township and received her education in the country schools.On July 3, 1917, Lillian was married to William Walde at Denison. They made their home on farms in East Boyer Township all of their working years. They retired from the farm in 1956, and moved to Denison. William died in February of 1973, and Lillian continued to reside at her home in Denison.
In November of 1982, Lillian moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where she had since resided. Lillian died Sept. 26. 1984 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 87 years, five months and three days. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and a member of the Ladies Aid of the church.
Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter, La Donna Walde, one son Walter Walde, one grandson, Barry Walde, one great grandson, Peter Sjaastad, and two brothers, Henry and John Ruberg.
She is survived by 11 children, Raymond Walde of Denison, Helen, Mrs. Kenneth Hinze of Sidney, NE, Ruby, Mrs. Paul Jahn of Denison, Edward Walde of Albuquerque, NM, Wilma Walde of Denver, CO, Lillian, Mrs. Arden Fastenau of Aurora, CO, Leonard Walde of Vail, Virgil Walde of Denison, Gladys, Mrs. Phil Hagny of Gettysburg, SD, Marilyn, Mrs. Max Yoakum of Des Moines, and Marlene Brudenell of Tallahassee, FL, one daughter-in-law, Leona Walde of Denison, 33 grandchildren 31 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, five sisters-in-law, Minnoe Moeller of Denison, Hattie Wulf of Denison, Rose Larson of Kiron, Irene Smith of Carroll, and Erna Ruberg of Denison, and one brother-in-law, Max Walde of Denison. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Jack D. Heck officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Henry Henningsen singing, "In The Garden" and "What God Ordains Is Always Good" and the congregation singing "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist.
Honorary bearers included grandsons Neal Walde, Dale Walde, Ronald Jahn, Corby Walde, Mark Brudenell, Andrew Yoakum, and Steve Walde. Pallbearers were grandsons, Russell Walde, Dennis Jahn, Arnie Walde, Roger Walde, James Brudenell and Matthew Hagny. Interment was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Pfannebecker-Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Loretta Christine (Schmidt) Miller (1892 - 1989)
Loretta Christine Miller, the daughter of Hans and Marie Hinricks Schmidt, was born on October 17, 1892 at Charlotte, Iowa and died on June 8, 1989 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of 96 years.Loretta attended school in Schleswig and made her home with her sister and her husband, Dr. and Mrs. Walter Schultz for a number of years.
On March 16, 1921, she was united in marriage to Henry Petersen. They lived on the farm now occupied by the Ralph Dierenfield family. On January 3, 1930, Henry passed away. After the death of her husband, Loretta sold the farm and her household goods and moved to town. Loretta bought the home now occupied by Mrs. Selma Fredericks and lived there for 21 years. She spent some time with her mother, Mrs. Marie Schmidt, in Omaha, and with her brother and his wife, Ernie and Rose Schmidt.
On July, 7, 1936, Loretta was married to George Miller In Omaha. They lived in the home now occupied by Mrs. Fredericks. On February 15, 1951, Mr. Miller passed away. After her husband's death, Loretta sold her home and moved into the Boock Apartments and then into the Suhr Apartments. In October, 1978, she entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, where she made her home until her death.
Loretta was Baptized and later Confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Charlotte, Iowa. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig for over 50 years and sang in the Choir which was directed by Mrs. Wetzler.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husbands, four brothers, and two sisters. Survivors include nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 12, 1989 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Rev. Harold E. Schaible officiated at the services with interment in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Serving as pallbearers were Dr. Richard Schultz, Dr. Kris Birusingh, Larry Clausen, Mark Janssen, Walter Petersen and Erwin Voss.

Louie Frank Stier (1896 - 1989)
Louie Frank Stier, 92, son of Martin and Charrolette Stier was born Aug. 25, 1896, in Soldier Twp., Crawford County, la. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Twp.He married Freda Krueger on Dec. 20, 1916. This union was blessed with three children. They farmed in the Crawford County area till 1942. They moved to Denison, where he worked for the city in Denison and Dow City till 1956. They then moved to Omaha, Neb., where he collected tolls at the Mormon Bridge until its closing.
Funeral services were held April 17 (1989) at Mount Olive Church in Omaha, Neb., with graveside services at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison.
Preceding him in death was his wife Freda, one daughter, Leona, one son Arthur, and one granddaughter, Elaine.
Survivors include one son, Ervin of Crescent; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren. Serving as pallbearers were, Phil Stier, Alvin Stier, Lester Krueger, Mark Boyens, Scott Boyens and Randy Thompson.

Louie F. Strissel (1889 - 1985)
Louie F. Strissel was born on January 17, 1889 in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Herman and Augusta Wick Strissel. He died Thursday morning, October 17, 1985 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 96. Louie spent his formative years in Crawford County, he received his formal education in the Crawford County schools.Louie entered the United States Army on February 25, 1918 in Denison. He was assigned to the 357th Infantry in France during World War I. On June 16, 1919 he was discharged from the Army at Camp Dodge. Following his military service, Louie lived for a number of years with the Albert Strissel family. He later worked for the State of Iowa at the nursery in Ames for eleven years. Louie made Denison his home during his retirement years. He entered the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison on July 19, 1979 due to failing health.
Louie was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He was a charter member of the V.F.W. Ninus L. Hunt Post 2504 in which he served for fifty years.
In addition to his parents, Louie was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Bill, Herman, and Albert, two sisters, Caroline Krumvide, and Augusta Mayfield, and step-brother Frank Sydow.
Survivors include one step-brother Carl Sydow of Omaha, Nebr., one niece and several nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 19, 1985, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Interment was in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery near Charter Oak. The Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist for the services with Henry Henningsen serving as soloist. Hymns for the services included "I'm But A Stranger Here" and "Asleep in Jesus." Serving as pallbearers for the services were Dennis Huebner, Fred Strissel, Henry Henningsen, Joe Curnyn, Marvin Lackman and Walter Thies. Louie Richard Kastner (1895 - 1985)
Louie Richard Kastner was born on March 15, 1895 in Crawford County, Ia. the son of Edward and Lena Friedricksen Kastner. He died on Saturday, Nov. 15, 1986. at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Ia. at the age of 91 years and eight months.Louie spent his early years on a farm near Schleswig. He attended country school and graduated from Schleswig High School. He then attended the Denison Normal and Business college.
On Feb. 6, 1918, Louie was united in marriage to Lydia Ida Thiede in Schleswig. Together they settled on a farm in Morgan Township where they lived until 1940 when they moved to Schleswig. In February of 1957 Lydia passed away.
In June of 1958 Louie was united in marriage to Helen Wellendorf at the United Church of Christ parsonage. Louie was a life long member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. He was very interested in community affairs and held many offices. He was elected to the county A.A.A. Committee in 1933, when the farm program was organized, and served on that committee until 1944. He then was elected as secretary of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Ass. Louie held that position until 1965 and then became treasurer of the Association until retiring in 1976.
Louie was preceded in death by his first wife, Lydia, two sons Orville and Burness, one daughter Lois Knief, two brothers, Robert and Gilbert Kastner.
Survivors include his wife Helen; one son-in-law Cyrenus Knief of Kiron. Two step daughters; Marian, Mrs. Ervin Harm of Denison and Norma, Mrs. Edward Reham of Sioux City. One step daughter-in-law Mrs. Shirley Kastner of Kiron. also surviving are seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and twelve step grandchildren, twenty five step great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1986, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Darrell T. Bailey and Rev. Alfred Rinne officiated at the services. Serving as organist was Mrs. Evelyn Johnson, and Mrs. Pam Bailey served as soloist. Serving as pallbearers were Robert Kastner, Ronald Kastner, Gayle Knief, Gary Knief, Melvin Miller and Steve Jepsen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig, Iowa.

Louise (Mildenstein) Martens (1894 - 1994)
Louise Martens was born at Danschendorf, Germany, October 11, 1894, the daughter of Nicholas and Elise Christina Blismer Mildenstein. She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism when she was an infant at Danschendorf and confirmed in her Christian faith there when she was 16 years of age.Louise was united in marriage with Emil Martens in 1912 at Danschendorf, Germany. They made their home in Germany and their union was blessed with two daughters, Alouise Ann and Maria Dorothea.
The Martens family came to the United States of America in 1923 and settled in Schleswig, Iowa until 1934 when they moved to Denison. In 1937 they moved to Alameda, California where Mr. Martens died in 1938. Louise continued to reside in Alameda where she maintained her beautiful flower gardens at her home and was employed as a seamstress for a prominent designer. While residing in Alameda she was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and enjoyed the ladies sewing group of the church. Louise spent countless hours, both professionally and in her leisure time enjoying her gifted talent of sewing, crocheting and knitting.
In 1980 Louise returned to Iowa and made her home with her daughters, Ann in Denison and Dorothea in Waterloo. Her greatest joys in her later years was the companionship of her family and her poodle, little Princess.
Since May 12, 1993 Louise had resided at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison and it was there her death occurred Friday evening, March 11, 1994. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 99 years and 5 months. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Including her parents and her husband, Louise was preceded in death by six brothers, Johanes, Henry, Herman, Nicholas, Emil and Hans Mildenstein, two sisters Emma Kluever and Greta Beker and one grandson, Howard Ehlert.
Those who remain to cherish her memory include two daughters, Alouise Ann Quandt of Denison and Dorothea and her husband, Dr. Richard Winegarden of Waterloo, Iowa, 15 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Louise's funeral ceremony was held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 15, 1994 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. Philip E. Bloch officiating. Music for the ceremony was provided by Henry Henningsen singing "Be Still My Soul" and "How Great Thou Art" and the congregation singing, "I'm But A Stranger Here". Karen Kahl served as organist. Pallbearers included Gene, Gary, Robert, Richard, Steven and David Quandt, Jr. The committal ceremony and interment was held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Louise (Thomas) Ludeman (1890 - 1989)
Louise Thomas Ludeman was born on April 24, 1890, in Tonech Schleswig - Holstein, Germany, the daughter of Jacob and Anne Moller Thomas. She died on Saturday, Jan. 21, 1989, at her home in Denison at the age of 98 years.Louise was raised and educated in Germany. She was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Germany. On Jan. 8, 1915, she was united in marriage to Henry Ludeman in Germany. Henry and Louise came to the United States in 1929, and settled on a farm near Denison. To this union three children were born.
For a short time Louise and Henry helped other farmers in the Denison area. They then purchased a farm near Denison, and operated their farm until 1965 at which time they retired and moved to Denison.
On two different occasions they went back to Germany to visit their relatives and homeland. She was a very strong woman who enjoyed her home, and continued to do her own housework until the time of her death. Louise was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
In addition to her parents; Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, who died on July 10, 1978; two daughters: Anita Rath who died on June 29, 1988, and Magda Sahl who died on Oct. 27, 1988; one son-in-law, Werner Rath, who died on Dec. 27, 1985; also three brothers, two stepbrothers, and two stepsisters, all of whom died in Germany.
She is survived by one son, Ernest and his wife, Violet of Nevada; one son-in-law, Leslie Sahl of Denison; thirteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, twelve great-great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 23, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services with interment in the Lutheran Cemetery. Mrs. Darold Kahl was organist for Larry Boeck as soloist. Selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross." The congregational hymn was "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." Serving as pallbearers were Everett Miller, Kenneth Sahl, Wayne Sahl, Robert Rath, LaVern Ludeman and Terrance Ross. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Louise Wilhemina (Jensen) Woodruff (1897 - 1974)
Louise Wilhemina Jensen, daughter of Peter H. and Louise Mueller Jensen was born in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, April 20, 1897. She attended the Goodrich No. two school.In 1917 she married F. A. Woodruff. They had one son, Harry. They made their home on the farm in Goodrich Township until 1969 when they moved to town.
Mrs. Woodruff died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital Saturday, June 29, 1974.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, seven sisters, Mrs. John (Lena) Dokwiller, Mrs. Sam (Anna) Christiansen, Mrs. John (Minnie) Sachau, Mrs. Henry (Hannah) Dethmann, Mrs. John D. (Freda) Moeller, Mary and Emma and four brothers, Henry, Charles, Louie, and Peter.
Mrs. Woodruff has been a member of the Zion Lutheran Church since 1938.
She is survived by her husband, F.A. Woodruff.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 1 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, with Rev. Robert Maschke officiating. Burial followed at the Oakland Cemetery. The Maxwell Funeral Home, Denison, was in charge of arrangements.

Louis Henry Jepsen (1891 - 1976)
Louis Henry Jepsen, Denison, son of Jurgen and Cecelia Sonnichsen Jepsen, was born July 1, 1891, on a farm in Goodrich Township and died March 18, 1976, in Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 84 years, 8 months and 17 days.Mr. Jepsen was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township. He attended the St. Paul's Lutheran parochial school. Upon finishing school he helped his mother on the farm.
In Sept. 1912 he was united in marriage to Margaret Seehausen of Schleswig. Four children were born to this union. They made their home on a farm in Goodrich Township until 1930 when they moved to Denison. Mr. Jepsen was employed by Stark Bros. Nursery as a salesman. He also raised fruit trees and garden produce.
Mrs. Jepsen died Oct. 17,1956. In 1958 he married Tena Schneller in Sioux City. They made their home in Denison. In 1960 Mr. Jepsen retired. Mrs. Jepsen died Feb. 27, 1976.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Margaret, and his wife, Tena, one daughter, Delores, three brothers, Emil, Jurgen and Ted, and one sister, Dora Zage.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruby (Mrs. Reynold Groth) of Carroll, Hattie (Mrs. Arnold Gluesing) of Denison, one son, Louis Jr. of Dow City, two step-daughters, Anna (Mrs. Boyd Frazier) of Denison, and Margaret (Mrs. Edwin Maki) of Walled Lake, Mich., five grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, one brother, John, of Crestline, Ohio, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Huebner Funeral Home, at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 20, with Reverend Robert Maschke officiating. Pallbearers were Raymond Crilly, Delaine Vogt, Marvin Zage, Dennis Schirck, Larry Gluesing, and Charles Erlbacher. Interment was made in Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig, with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Lula C. (Plough) Jahn (1893 - 1975)
Lula C. Jahn, daughter of Henry and Ida Christiansen Plough, was born July 3, 1893, at Denison, and died at her home in Denison, Saturday, Dec. 6, 1975, at the age of 82 years, 5 months and 3 days.Mrs. Jahn was a life long resident of Denison. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and attended the Denison school.
She was united in marriage to Otto Jahn on Nov. 6, 1912, at Charter Oak. Three children were born to this union, Esther, Erma and Eileen. Mrs. Jahn operated the first nursing home in Denison. Mr. Jahn died March 7, 1969.
Survivors include her daughters, Mrs. Esther Champion of Omaha, Nebr., Erma (Mrs. Gordon Aldag) of Schleswig, and Mrs. Eileen Peters of Denison, 12 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren, two sisters, Inge (Mrs. Chris Rudloff) of Mitchell, S.D., and Edna (Mrs. Lional Leonard) of Scottsville, Calif., other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Andreas, Henry, Edward, Fred and Lorenz, and four sisters, Adela, Ida, Pauline, and Hertha.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the Zion Lutheran Church with Reverend Robert Maschke officiating. Pallbearers were Edward Champion, Richard Champion, Martin Champion, Emmett Champion, William Aldag and Ronald Aldag. Interment was made in the Morgan Township Cemetery with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Margaret (Pearson) Weberg (1898 - 1991)
Margaret Pearson Weberg was born on April 17, 1898, in Denison, Iowa, the younger daughter of Thomas E. and Eva Adelle Pearson. After graduation from Denison High School in 1916, she attended the Baptist College in Des Moines, receiving her B.Di degree. She taught in Dallas Center, in Denison and in a government school in Balboa, Panama Canal Zone. She loved teaching third graders and especially enjoyed her teaching in the Canal Zone.After returning from Panama, Margaret was united in marriage with Bryan Weberg on August 5, 1925. They made their home on a family farm south of Kiron. The senior Weberg family had moved to Denison so that their four sons, Earl, Ralph, Bryan and Carroll could receive a better eduction than the rural school of that day could give them.
Margaret was an inspiration to her husband in his local and state soil conservation work, REA, World War II War Board and Agricultural Adjustment Act office. In 1952 the couple moved to Kiron. Bryan died in 1982 and Margaret continued to reside in Kiron.
Since 1985 she had been a resident at Eventide Lutheran Home In Denison. Her death occurred there Tuesday, April 23, 1991. She attained the age of 93 years and 6 days.
Margaret was active in the Kiron Baptist Church as choir director, Sunday School teacher, and in various offices and committees. She also held membership in the Eastern Star, Farm Bureau, Garden Club, American Legion Auxiliary, and was a member of the Kiron School Board.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Bryan Weberg, one brother, Townsend Pearson and one sister, Laura Pearson.
Those left to cherish her memory in their hearts include two daughters, Lois Buchanan of Phoenix, Arizona, and Lynn Sandquist and her husband Ronald of Woodbury, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Val Buchanan and his wife Julie, Robin Buchanan, Jill Jahn and her husband, Ron, Ann Mathies and her husband Jim. Garrett, Tim and Tonya Sandquist; and seven great-grandchildren, Brendan, Jaime, Jeana and Brittany Buchanan, Chasen and Cassie Mathies and Jacy Jahn. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 26, 1991, at the Kiron Baptist Church in Kiron, with the Rev. Larry W. Odle and Rev. Brian Perry officiating. Comfort in music was provided by organist Roby Larson. Serving as casket bearers were Val Buchanan, Brendan Buchanan, Garrett Sandquist, Tim Sandquist, Jim Mathies and Ron Jahn. Interment was in the Kiron Cemetery at Kiron.

Marie Emily (Kuhlmann) Schultz (1897 - 1982)
Marie Emily Schultz was born on June 25, 1897 in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Henrietta Marten Kuhlmann. She died Nov. 6, 1982 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 85.Marie was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. She spent her early years on a family farm near Charter Oak. She received her formal education at a rural school near her home and at St. John's Lutheran School.
On Feb. 6, 1918, Marie was united in marriage to Herman Schultz at St. John's Lutheran Church. Together they made their home on a farm in Paradise Township. After retiring from the farm in 1944, they moved to Charter Oak. Herman died in 1957 and since that time Marie has continued to make Charter Oak her home. Marie was a life long member of St. John's Lutheran Church, St. John's Ladies Aid and also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Marie was preceded in death by one daughter Vernet, one grandson, four brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include, three daughters, Marcella, Mrs. Robert Harbaugh of Charter Oak, Ruth, Mrs. Leslie Reincke of Denison and Marilyn, Mrs. Norman Kuehl of Denison; one son Charles Schultz of Lake View and one son-in-law, Fernon Wessell of Chico, Calif. Also surviving are seventeen grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Nov. 9, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated at the services. Mrs. Paul Clausen served as organist with St. John's Lutheran Choir sing hymns, For Me To Live Is Jesus and Nearer My God To Thee. Pallbearers included, Norman Kiepe, Vernon Kuhlmann,Gerald Kuhlmann, Lorenz Schultz, Gerald Pedersen and Beryl Garrett. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Marie Katherine (Jetter) Wendt (1892 - 1976)
Marie Katherine Wendt, daughter of John and Caroline Bohnsack Jetter, was born on a farm in Crawford Co. near Manilla, Nov. 11, 1892 and died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1976 at the Eventide Home for the Aged where she has made her home for the past 9 years. She reached the age of 83 years 3 months and 17 days.Mrs. Wendt attended rural schools, and helped her parents on the farm and worked on various jobs until her marriage to Henry Wendt of Charter Oak, on Jan. 15, 1913. To this union two daughters were born.
They made their home on farms near Charter Oak and Denison until moving to Denison in 1934. Mrs. Wendt was employed at Aulds Green House for several years after they moved to Denison. Mr. Wendt died May 31, 1959.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Henry, one daughter Caroline, one granddaughter, four brothers Johnnie, Louie, Herman, Alvin and three sisters, Emma, Amanda arid Minnie.
Survivors include one daughter Louise, Mrs. William Andresen of Denison, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Laura Volquartsen of Arion, three brothers, Henry Fort Dodge, William of Wall Lake and Carl of Baltimore, Maryland.
Funeral services were held at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Tuesday, March 2, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Robert Maschke officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and Henry Henningsen sang, "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "God Will Take Care of You". Pallbearers were Marvin Wendt, Francis Hagerman, Ivyn Lund, Darrell Andresen, Dale Andresen and Harold Auld. Interment was made in the Lutheran Cemetery. Huebner Funeral Home in charge of services.

Marie Margaret (Greder) Asmus (1897 - 1996)
Marie Margaret Asmus was born May 9, 1897, the daughter of Jacob and Augusta Carstens Greder. She died at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa on Sunday, March 31, 1996 at the age of ninety-eight.Margaret was born in Sioux City, Iowa and lived with her parents on a farm near Buck Grove. After receiving her education at a rural school near her home, she was employed at a creamery in Buck Grove for a number of years.
On October 31, 1931, she was united in marriage to Henry Asmus at the Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. The couple made their home in Buck Grove for two years, before moving to the Asmus family farm east of Buck Grove. Henry passed away in 1961 and Margaret sold the farm and moved to Arizona to be close to family. She later returned to Iowa and lived in Manilla for several years, subsequently moving to an apartment in Denison before entering the Denison Care Center in July of 1991.
Margaret was a loving and devoted wife and a caring mother and grandmother. In her leisure time she enjoyed crocheting, knitting and gardening. Margaret was a member of the Kingdom Hall in Denison.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Mahnert and Henry Asmus; one son, Robert E. Mahnert, three sisters, Mary Greder, Alice Jensen and Meta Carstens; two brothers, Bernhard and Emil Greder, and one step-grandson, William Steinkuehler.
Survivors included a step-daughter, Alvera Steinkuehler and her husband, Alvin of Dunlap; one brother, Harry Greder and his wife, Doris of Omaha; two grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; twenty-one step great-grandchildren and forty-one step great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 3, 1996 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Elder Donald Crane officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Oakland Cemetery. Alice J. Crane provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Cindy Heideman singing "Life Without End - At Last". Pallbearers were: Lloyd Carstens, Gilbert Carstens, Robert Schunter, Gary Carstens and Dr. Mack Greder. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Marie (Rath) Rohwer (1889 - 1900)
Marie Rohwer died on Monday morning, Jan. 8, 1990 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, la. She was 100 years of age. Marie was born on Sept. 12, 1889 in Denison, the daughter of William F. and Anna Christensen Rath.She graduated from Denison High School in 1906 and attended the University of Iowa. She taught in the Schleswig School System for six years and during World War 1, she was employed by the United States Government in Washington, D.C,
In 1919, she was united in marriage to Julius Rohwer. This union was blessed with two children, Dorothy and Patricia. The Rohwers resided in Schleswig all during their marriage where Mr. Rohwer was president of the Farmers State Bank, Mr. Rohwer died in 1971 and Mrs. Rohwer continued to live in her home in Schleswig until September of 1988 when she moved to Eventide.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Dorothy Rohwer Broadhurst in 1983.
Mrs. Rohwer was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Crawford County Hospital Auxiliary and the Altar Society of the Sacred Heart Church in Ida Grove.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Hurlbut and her husband, Dave; nine grandchildren: John Hurlbut of Boston, Mass., Steven Hurlbut, Geoffrey Hurlbut and Sally Hurlbut Byrd, all of New Jersey, John and Peter Broadhurst, Anne and Katie Broadhurst of Hartford, Conn., and Sarah Broadhurst of Clearwater, Fla. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren; one sister, Irma Rounds of Pittsfield, Va.; one brother, William Rath of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and a host of friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. Thursday, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove. Celebrant was Fr. Alfred McCoy. Mrs. Barbara Pfaltzgraff was organist. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig.

Martha M. (Luitjens) Lackman (1899 - 1992)
Martha M. Lackman was born on a farm in Goodrich Township, north of Denison, Nov. 3, 1899, the daughter of Herman and Elsaba Laumbach Luitjens. She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism Jan. 7, 1900, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and confirmed into her Christian faith there Mar. 28, 1915. Martha was raised on the farm and received her formal education in the Milford Number 9 rural school.On Jan. 12, 1920, Martha was united in marriage with Henry Lackman at her parents' farm home by Pastor Frehse. Their union was blessed with two children, Marvin and Helen. They made their home on a farm in Milford Township and later farmed and lived on other farms in Crawford County. In 1959 they moved to Denison. Henry died Jan. 3, 1975, and Martha continued to reside in Denison where she enjoyed her card clubs and attending the Senior Center for meals and fellowship.
In February of 1989 Martha moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. Since January 30, 1991 she has resided at Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids, where her death occurred Friday evening, Jan. 3, 1992. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 92 years and two months. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison and the Ladies Circle there.
Including her parents and her husband, Martha was preceded in death by four grandchildren, Marilyn, Ralph, Sally and Richard Lackman; one brother, Henry Luitjens and her son-in-law, Gerald Bull.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son and his wife, Marvin and Anna Lackman of Denison; her daughter, Mrs. Helen Bull of Coon Rapids;one granddaughter and her husband, Janice and Sami Mirza of Longwood, Florida and two great grandchildren, Farah and Shaun Mirza of Longwood, Florida. Also surviving are other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 6, 1992 at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa with Dr. Edward R. Peterson officiating. Music for the service was provided by the congregation singing three hymns with Glenn Rankin serving as organist. Selections included "Abide With Me," "Amazing Grace" and "Just A Closer Walk With Thee." Casket bearers were Sami Mirza, Elmer J. Lorenzen, Martin Schneider, Kenneth Aldag, Earl Olsen and Fred W. Schnoor. Interment was in the Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Funeral services for Martha P. Quade were held January 6, 1973, at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig, Iowa, with the Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. John Evers was the organist. Mrs. Harlan Buffum and Miss Janet Buffum sang "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "In the Garden".Martha P. Quade was born to August and Lena Ericksen on October 20, 1891 in Hayes Township, Ida County. She was baptized at home on November 3, 1901. She was confirmed on March 25, 1906 by Rev. Hansen at the Evangelical Free Church.
She was married to Edward Quade on February 21, 1912. They farmed around Boyer and in Minnesota. Mr. Quade died in 1962. Mrs. Quade was a housekeeper for John Johnson for many years.
She died suddenly at her home on January 3, 1973; of a heart attack. Mrs. Quade was preceded in death by her husband, one son Lester, who died in 1922, three brothers and one sister.
She is survived by one daughter, Alvera, Mrs. Clarence Reincke; son-in-law, Clarence Reincke; one granddaughter, Jolene; one great-granddaughter, Renae; one brother, Helmot Ericksen of Cedar Falls, Iowa; three sisters, Lillie, Mrs. Hugo Brodersen of Schleswig, Selma, Mrs. Fred Christiansen of Arthur and Ella, Mrs. George Riessen of Denison.
Pallbearers were Vernon Christiansen, Harry Ericksen, Eldor Petersen, Melvin Schultz, Ralph Reincke and LeRoy Brodersen. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Mary Elizabeth (Janssen) Hansen (1891 - 1979)
Mary Elizabeth Hansen was born on February 24, 1891, at Grant Township, Ida County, Iowa, the daughter of Ommo and Fredricka Lubber Janssen. She died on Tuesday afternoon, May 15, 1979, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa at the age of 88.Mary was raised on a farm in Grant Township. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home. She was baptized on March 1, 1891, and later on April 8, 1906 was confirmed at Grant Township.
On August 23, 1911 Mary was united in marriage to Tony Hansen. They farmed in Crawford and Ida Counties until the fall of 1945 when they moved to Schleswig. While living in Schleswig, Mary and Tony celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband in 1973, her parents, four brothers and one sister.
Survivors include, one daughter Laverna Jensen of Schleswig, one son Orville and his wife Irene, four grandsons and six great-grandchildren. Also by one sister, Mrs. Anna Friedrichsen of Odebolt and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Friday, May 18, 1979, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig, Iowa. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Norman Friedrichsen, Walter Friedrichsen, Walter Jessen, Oran Kuehl, Roy Janssen and Allen Janssen.

Matthaeus Hans Wilken (1892 - 1970)
Funeral services for Matt Wilken were held Wednesday, November 25, 1970, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, with Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. G. M. Johnson was organist and Mrs. Harlem Buffum and Mrs. Don Meyer sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "The Lord Is My Shepherd."Matthaeus Hans Wilken, son of Heinrich Wilken and his wife, Margaret Jurgens, was born on June 28, 1892 at Fehmann, Germany. He came to the United States in 1909.
On February 26, 1916 he was married to Wilhelmina Wohlert in Ida Grove. They lived on a farm two miles west and one-fourth mile south of Schleswig until 1948 when they moved to Schleswig.
Mr. Wilken died at his home on November 23, after a lingering illness. He attained to 78 years, four months, and 25 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Frederick, who died in infancy, three brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his wife, Wilhelmina, one daughter, Margaret, and two sons Johannes and Nick, all of Schleswig, one brother Carl of Denison, two sisters, Dora Speth of Davenport and Maggie, Mrs. Emil Mildenstein.
Pallbearers were: Hans Fick, Hugo Jensen, George Else, Alfred Schoenfeld, LeRoy Bumann, and Harlan Buffum. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Mia Vogt (1899 - 2002)
Mia Vogt was born May 15, 1899, the daughter of Matthias and Margaretha Kiefer Vogt. She died Sunday, January 6, 2002 at the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of one-hundred two.Mia was born in Kirchberg/Hundsrueck, Germany and was baptized in the Roman Catholic Faith. She received her education in Germany and after completing her education, Mia worked in an office and as a saleslady.
In October 1928, Mia immigrated to the United States and made her home in Schleswig, Iowa. She went back to Germany for a visit in 1934 and Mia and her sister attended the Passion Play in Oberammergau. Mia returned for two more visits to Germany in 1964 and in 1972.
Mia worked for the Briardale Store in Schleswig for twenty-nine years. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove for twenty-nine years and the Altar Society. For ten years she made her home at the Hohenzollernheime Retirement Apartments, before moving to Eventide on September 15,1989.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters. Survivors include a great niece, Susan Wright and her husband, Bill and one great-great-nephew, William W. Wright of Hayward, Wisconsin; special friends, Heniz and Stella Behnke of Schleswig.
Mass of Christian Burial was held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 8, 2002, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig, Iowa with Fr. David Hemann serving as Celebrant of the Mass and grave side rites at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Those serving as pallbearers were: Walter R. Huebner, Charles Ball, and Andrea Boyer. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Milda Ellen (Hoffeins) McCracken (1898 - 2001)
Milda Ellen, daughter of Peter Joachim and Emma Doris Schade Hoffeins, was born August 14, 1898, at Manilla, Iowa. She grew up in Manilla and graduated from Manilla High School in 1916. Milda then worked at Kerr Store, in a millinery shop where she made hats, and then the Milwaukee Depot in Manilla.On January 20, 1920, Milda was united in marriage in Manilla with her high school sweetheart, Newt McCracken following his return from World War I. Three children were born to this union. Milda and Newt farmed south of Manilla until retiring in 1960, when they moved into town. In 1986 Newt and Milda reigned as Manilla Centennial King and Queen.
After Newt died March 25, 1993, Milda was able to remain in her home until 1995, when she became a resident of the Manilla Manor. Throughout the years Milda was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Manilla, participating in Ladies' Circle and Bible study. She was a charter member of the Home Community Club, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, a Gold Star Mother and a faithful Red Cross blood donor. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting and volunteering at the Manilla Manor.
On Wednesday, January 10, 2001, Milda died at the Manilla Manor in Manilla, Iowa. She was 102 years, 4 months and 27 days of age.
Besides her parents and husband, Milda was preceded in death by two sons, Donald McCracken and his wife Helen; and James McCracken; a sister Anna Hoffeins; four brothers: Hans, Harry, William, and Rudolph Hoffeins; and a son-in-law Robert Patterson.
She is survived by her daughter Lorraine Patterson of Spencer; a daughter-in-law Ruth McCracken of Florida; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and by nieces, a nephew, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2001 at the United Church of Manilla in Manilla, Iowa with Reverend Brian Sherman officiating the service and interment held at the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla, Iowa. Gretchen Hagedorn served as organist. Those serving as casketbearers were James McCracken, Jon McCracken, Jay McCracken, Peggy McCracken, Susan Wulf, Shelley Anderson, Thomas Patterson, and Kay McCann. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for fellowship and lunch at the church. The Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla was in charge of arrangements.

Minna K. (Aldag) Linke (1891 - 1984)
Minna K. Linke, 93, of Ute, died Friday, July 13, 1984, in a nursing home in Omaha after a long illness.Services were at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 17, in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ute. The Rev. Robert Leege officiated. Burial was in Grant Township Cemetery near Schleswig. A prayer service was at 7:30 p.m., Monday, July 16, in the Walter Funeral Home in Ute.
Mrs. Linke, the former Minna Aldag, was born January 29, 1891, to Henry and Sophia (Prosh) Aldag in Ida County and was raised near Schleswig. She married Fred Linke January 15, 1912, at Schleswig. They farmed near Schleswig until 1921, when they moved to Ute. He died March 10, 1971. She moved to Omaha shortly after his death.
Mrs. Linke was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ute and the Ladies Aid of the church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, two daughters, one sister, three brothers, and one great-grandchild.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. John (Mabel) Gosch of Ute, and Mrs. C.K. (Lois) Waltermeyer of Omaha; two sons, Harvey of Princeton, Missouri, and Delano in Oregon; one brother, Theodore of Denison; one sister, Mrs. Ella Grell of Denison; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson .
Pallbearers were Raymond Gosch, Adam Gosch, William E. Knight, Aaron Gosch, Ronald Pullen, and Wayne E. Knight
