Clara (Grill) Petersen (1888 - 1970)

Funeral services for Mrs. Clara Petersen were held Wednesday, November 4, 1970 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison with Rev. Harry Strong officiating. Dorothy Norman, was organist, and Mrs. Harlan Buffum, soloist, sang In the Garden and The Lord's Prayer.

Clara was the daughter of the late Claus and Henrietta (Brandt) Grill, was born on a farm in Goodrich Township January 20, 1888. She attended Country school and helped her folks on the farm.

On February 28, 1910 she was united in marriage to Fritz Petersen of Otter Creek Township. They made their home on a farm in Otter Creek Township until 1942 when they retired and made their home in Denison. To this union three sons and five daughters were born. Mrs. Clara Petersen passed away at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha Monday November 2, 1970 after a prolonged illness, at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 13 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband three brothers Herman, Louie and Willie, two sisters Alma and Elsie. She is survived by her eight children Roland and harry of Denison, Melvin of Deloit; Ruth, Mrs. Pete McGinn of Denison; Lois, Mrs. Carl Miller of Mapleton; Dorothy, Mrs. Ray Pollock of Vail; Henrietta, Mrs. Eldo Hollander of Ida Grove; Mary, Mrs. Ray Miller of Schleswig; twenty-nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, several other relatives and many friends.

Pallbearers were Douglas Hollander, Dennis Miller, Keith Petersen, Darrell Miller, Daryl Petersen, and Glenn Pollock. Interment was in the Morgan Township cemetery, Schleswig, Iowa.

Detlef Peters (1886 - 1966)

Funeral services for Detlef Peters were held Saturday, August 27, 1966 at Sinn's Funeral Home, Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. Broder Petersen was the organist accompanying a solo by Mrs. Harlan Buffum. The Hymn was Abide with Me.

Detlef Peters was born in Morgan Township March 23, 1886 to Franz Peters and Caroline Rothe. He has been a resident of Schleswig for 76 years. He was never married.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Emma and Louise and one brother, Henry. Survivors include Frank Peters, Mrs. A.C. Schwarz, Mrs. Earl Lyons and Annie Saxon. He passed away suddenly August 24, 1966. Interment was at the Morgan Township Cemetery. Pallbearers were Broder Petersen, Ed Schroeder, Fred Miller, Jens Edsen, Albert Teut and Clarence Jahde.

Dorcas (Leitner) Niewoehner (1905 - 1981)

Dorcas Niewoehner was born May 12, 1905, on a farm in Hayes Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Daniel and Alice Watson Leitner. As a young girl the family moved to a farm west of Denison, where Dorcas spent her remaining childhood years. She received her education at the Denison schools graduating from high school with the class of 1925. She was certified as a teacher and taught for many years in the area schools.

On February 12, 1941, Dorcas was united in marriage with Emil Henry Niewoehner at Blair, Neb. They made their home in this area and then moved to California for a period of two years. From California, they returned to Iowa and taught school until they returned to Route three Denison. Emil died April 12, 1981, and Dorcas continued to reside at Route three, Denison. Dorcas was taken to the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison in early November and it was there her death occurred Tuesday, Nov. 24. She had attained the age of 76 years, 6 months, and 12 days.

Including her husband, Dorcas was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Earl and Roland Leitner, and three sisters, Daisy Shives, Margaret Leitner, and Violet Denker. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Myrtle Watson of Denison and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside Memorial services for Dorcas and Emil Niewoehner were held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, November 28, at the Evangelical Cemetery at Route three, Denison, with Dr. L. Scott Woodworth officiating. Interment of their ashes was in the Evangelical Cemetery. The Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Edward H. Petersen (1904 - 1988)

Edward H. Petersen, the son of Peter and Lizzie Neimann Petersen, was born on May 19, 1904 near Manilla. He attended rural schools and mechanics school in Omaha, Neb. He worked as a mechanic, a car salesman for Ehrichs Motors and a seed corn salesman. He also worked at the Denison Hotel and for the Denison Municipal Utilities, retiring in 1974. He was an active volunteer fireman for many years.

On December 1, 1927, Edward and Mary McMinimee of Denison were united in marriage at the St. Rose of Lima rectory. This union was blessed with two daughters. They made their home in Denison. Mary passed away on Jan, 12, 1982. Edward entered the Denison Care Center about four weeks ago and passed away on February 5, 1988 at the Care Center. He attained the age of 83 years. He was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison.

Preceding him in death in addition to his wife Mary, were his parents and one brother. Survivors include his daughters, Audrey Hansen of Denison and Sharon Vandercreek of Omaha, Neb.; eleven grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and one sister, Elsie, Mrs. Oliver Boeck of Denison.

Funeral services were held at 10 AM, Monday, February 8th at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison with Father Michael T. Larkin officiating. Burial was in the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery. Mrs. Jean Cornelius provided music for the service. Rosary was recited at 8 PM Sunday at the Huebner Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers were Daniel Hansen, Douglas Hansen, Mitchell Hansen, Nicholas Hansen, Matthew Winey and Edward Gladden. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Ella ( Gregerson) Precht (1908 - 1986)

Ella M. Precht was born at Luck, Wisconsin, July 31, 1908, the daughter of Nels and Inga Nielsen Gregerson. When she was young the family moved to Defiance, Iowa, where she was raised and was educated, graduating from the Defiance High School. She furthered her education for a time at the Denison Normal College.

On August 5, 1928, Ella was married to Frank Precht at Defiance. To this union three children were born, Fred, Jean Marie and Frank Jr. The Precht's made their home in Denison where Ella was a homemaker and seasonally employed at the Iowa Master Breeder hatchery and Ella worked full-time there until they sold the business in 1966. She then operated a Tropical Fish Business in her home for several years. Frank died April 24, 1975, and Ella continued to spend her retirement years at her home in Denison.

Ella died June 26, 1986 at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 77 years, 10 months, and 25 days. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison, the Melrose Circle of the church.

Including her parents and her husband, Ella was preceded in death by one daughter, Jean Marie Mein, two brothers, Richard and Clarence Gregerson, and two sisters, Edith Jenkins and Marion Kjeldgaard.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Fred and Kathie Precht of Omaha, Nebraska, and Frank and Mary Precht of Elgin, Illinois, six grandchildren, fourteen great grand-children and one sister, Violet Noble of Omaha. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM June 28, at the United Presbyterian Church in Denison, with the Rev. James D. Cobb officiating. Music for the service was provided by Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as organist and playing How Great Thou Art and I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked.

Honorary pallbearers were grandchildren, Alan Mein and Stephen Bailey. Grandchildren serving as pallbearers included Lee Mein, Scott Mein, Dan Precht, Thomas Precht and Rob Busch. Interment was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Emil M. Peters (1894 - 1968)

Emil Marcus Peters was born March 23, 1894 in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County. He was one of eight children born to Mr. and Mrs. Claus J. Peters. He died October 8 at the court house in Denison.

Mr. Peters attend school in the public schools at Schleswig. He married Ethel May Kellogg on November 2, 1927. One son, Wayne, was born to this union.

He served as postmaster in Schleswig, and later was employed by the Farmers State Bank there. He served as deputy county auditor from 1929 to 1930. For two years he and his brother operated the Peter's Drug store in Schleswig.

He was elected Clerk of the District Court in November of 1932 and served in that office from January 1933 until the time of his death. Mr. Peters was a former president of the Iowa Clerk's Association and a past president of the Denison Kiwanis club. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Sioux City, Sylvan Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, of which he was Worthy Patron, member of the Carroll International Oder of Odd Fellows Lodge, of the Denison Chamber of Commerce and of the First United Methodist church of Denison.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel, a son, Dr. Wayne E. Peters of Middlebury, Vermont, four grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Ella Schroeder of Ida Grove and Mrs. Minnie Kolls of Bridgewater, South Dakota.

Services were held Friday, October 11 at 10:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jerold L. Irvin officiating. Honorary bearers, Crawford County Bar Association, Crawford County Board of Supervisors, Crawford County officials. Pall bearers were Clifford Foltz, Edmond Hamann, Palmer Peters, Donald Kroeger, Lawrence Hollander, and Hans Wagner. Interment was in Morgan Township cemetery in Schleswig.

Ethel (Kellogg) Peters (1890 - 1983)

Ethel May Peters was born July 7, 1890, at Galva, Iowa, the daughter of Orlando and Alice McKee Kellogg. She was raised in Galva and attended the public schools there. She furthered her education, graduating from a two year Normal Course at Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa. She then taught in the public schools at Ute, Schleswig and Galva, Iowa.

On November 2, 1927, Ethel was united in marriage with Emil M. Peters at Schleswig, Iowa. To this union one son, Wayne, was born. They made their home in Denison where Mr. Peters was Clerk of the District Court for many years and Ethel was very active in civic and church organizations.

Emil died October 8, 1968, and Ethel continued to reside at their home in Denison until July of 1981, when she moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.

Ethel entered the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on December 31, 1982, and it was there her death occurred Saturday evening, January 8, 1983. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 92 years, 6 months, and 1 day.

Ethel was a Past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge, a Past Matron of the Sylvan Chapter No. 207, Order of the Eastern Star, Denison, Iowa, and a Past Worthy High Priestess of the White Shrine. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison and a Past President of the Women's Society of Christian Service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three brothers. Ethel is survived by her son, Dr. Wayne E. Peters and his wife Natalie of Middlebury, Vermont, and four grandchildren, Lerin, David, Eric and Ross. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 A. M. Monday, January 10, 1983, at the First United Methodist Church in Denison with Dr. L. Scott Woodworth officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Mrs. Terry Magden, soloist and Glenn Rankin as organist. Casket bearers included J.R. Robertson, Darrell Kellogg, Daryl Sorensen, Edmund Hamann, Sheldon Hendrix, and Dwight Westcott. Burial was in the Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig, Iowa. Eastern Star services were held at 7:30 P.M. Sunday, January 9, 1983, at the Pfannebecker-Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison with the Sylvan Chapter No. 207, Order of the Eastern Star, Denison, Iowa conducting the service.

Helen F. (Clausen) Mason (1917 - 1967)

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Howard Mason on Monday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township with Rev. E.E. Greene officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe, organist accompanied the congregation who sane Rock of Ages and Abide with Me.

Helen Frieda, daughter of Daniel Clausen and Emma nee Mohr was born August 18, 1917, near Charter Oak. She grew up and attended school in Crawford County. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith on September 30, 1917 and was confirmed on February 28, 1932.

On February 7, 1940 she was united into marriage to Howard Mason at Denison with Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating.

She is survived by her husband, Howard, three children, Wayne and LaDonna of Omaha and Garry at home; 3 grandchildren, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Clausen of Schleswig and one sister, Clara, Mrs. Melvin Teut of Denison.

She died on Friday, October 20, 1967, at Lutheran hospital in Sioux City. She attained the age of 50 years, 2 months and 2 days.

Pallbearers were: Herman Bockelmann, Louis Bruhn, Alvin Eck, Carl Bohlmann, Richard Dorale, and Harvey Lafrentz. Interment was made in the cemetery at Soldier Township.

Herman Martens (1881 - 1967)

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 25, 1967 for Herman Martens, at the Huebner Funeral Home at Denison, with Rev. C.W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe, organist accompanied the Lutheran Ladies Choir who sang, What a Friend We Have in Jesus and Just as I Am.

Herman Christopher was born on October 22, 1881 near Westside where he also grew up to manhood.

On March 1, 1905 he was married to Sophie Wiese. They farmed in the Westside vicinity until they moved to Westside. In 1951 they moved to Spirit Lake and in 1963 they moved to Schleswig.

He is survived by four children; Mrs. Helen Hachmeister of Denison, Halver Martens of Westside, Mrs. Evelyn Martens from Schleswig, and Clifford Martens of Avoca. Also survived by two grandchildren, Verta Pugh from Decatur, Illinois and Lee Martens of Arcadia and six great-grandchildren.

He is preceded into death by his parents, five brothers, and four sisters. He entered the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on July 18 and passed away at the hospital on July 23. He attained the age of 86 years, 10months and one day.

Pallbearers were, Clayton Brotherson, Ed Neuman, Johnnie Stender, Otto Massman, John Noethe and Melvin Wilken. Interment was made at the Westside Cemetery, Westside, Iowa.

Hugo C. Moeller (1923 - 1968)

Dr. Hugo C. Moeller of San Francisco, California University of California medical Center professor, died suddenly June 1, 1968 of natural causes at the age of 44. He was a recognized authority on peptic ulcers and ulcerative colitis.

He was born on July 9, 1923 at Schleswig, Iowa, where he attended rural school and high school. He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate from Drake University, and earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago in 1948. He interned at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago in 1948. Dr. Moeller was a resident of medicine at the University of Chicago from 1949 to 1953, where he received his Ph. D. degree. From 1953-1955 he was a captain in the United States Army Medical Corps. He was in the private practice of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology presently in San Francisco.

Dr. Moeller, as a member of a San Francisco research team, was cited twice in recent years by the American Medical Association - once for research into the serious disease of ulcerative colitis, and last year for a scientific teaching exhibit. He was listed in American Men of Science and American Men of Medicine, Who's Who in the West and was a member and fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Gastroenterological Association. He also held membership in the county, state and national medical association.

Survivors include Dr. Moeller's wife, Tia, and children, Paul, Kenneth and Cathy, all of the family home, 1795 14th Avenue, San Francisco. His father, John D. Moeller of Schleswig. Two sisters, Jessie, Mrs. Walter Jaacks from Denison, Louis, Mrs. Leslie Hinrichsen of Ute; two brothers, John H. and George of Schleswig. Also nieces, nephews and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1962.

Funeral services were held on June 6th from the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiated. Mrs. Willis Jaacks sang two hymns, Beyond the Sunset and The Old Rugged Cross. She was accompanied on the organ by Mrs. John H. Evers. The honorary pallbearers were: Arlo Jensen, Harry Schau, Willis Jaacks, Thomas Flagge, Louis Moeller and Palmer Moeller. Military honors were conducted by the V.F.W. and American Legion. Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery.

Johanna (Weller) Nulle (1895 - 1981)

Johanna Marie Christine Nulle was born Dec 7, 1895 in Mills County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Emma Thies Weller. She died Jan. 8, 1981 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital, Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of 85,

Johanna was raised and educated in Buck Grove. In June of 1916, she was united in marriage to William Beermann at Denison. To this union were born two daughters. They made their home on a farm south of Denison. After Mr. Beermann's death in 1923, Johanna moved into Buck Grove.

In October of 1926, Johanna was united in marriage to Willie Nulle at Denison. They returned to the farm south of Denison. To this union were born four children, three of which died in infancy. After retiring to Denison Mr. Nulle died in 1946. Since that time, Johanna has continued to make Denison her home. For the past number of years she has been a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home. Johanna was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

In addition to her parents and her husbands, Johanna was preceded in death by three children in infancy, one granddaughter, one great granddaughter, three brothers, and two sisters.

Survivors include three daughters, Margaret, Mrs. Rudolph Hollander and Edna, Mrs. Edward Bandow, both of Denison, and Mildred, Mrs. Leon Neubauer of Ida Grove. Also by ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and five sisters, Mrs. Olga Beermann of Denison, Mrs. Frieda Voege of Manning, Mrs. Anna Rickers of Westside, Mrs. Minnie Brockmann of Carroll and Mrs. Alvina Kohlbeck of Fort Worth, Texas.

Funeral services were held Jan 10 at 1:30PM at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated at the services. Pallbearers were grandsons Duane Hollander, John Zimmerman, Donald Bandow, Randy Johnson, Tim Bubke and Kevin Neubauer. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Albert C. Jensen (abt. 1899 - 1969)

Albert Chris Jensen, age 70. of 4708 18th Avenue N.E. Seattle. Washington, died suddenly on November 6, 1969.

Mr. Jensen was born in Crawford County, Iowa and lived and farmed in Crawford County for a number of years. He worked as an auto-mechanic for four years in Denison, Iowa, before moving to Seattle, Washington in 1941. He worked as an aeromechanic for the Boeing Company in Seattle until his retirement in 1964. He was a member of the Aero-Mechanics' Union.

Mr. Jensen is survived by his wife Lucinda Jensen; one daughter, Joleen (Mrs. James R.) Barr of Seattle; two brothers, Julius Jensen of Alta, Iowa and Raymond Jensen of Ida Grove, Iowa, one sister, Amanda (Mrs. Paul) Voss of Schleswig, Iowa and two granddaughters Terry and Toni Barr, both of Seattle.

Funeral services were held in the Acacia Funeral Home, Seattle, on Monday, November 10th and were followed by cremation.

Albert J. Grell (1910 - 1979)

Albert John Grell was born Feb. 27, 1910 near Ricketts, Iowa, the son of Carl and Caroline Jurgensen Grell. He died April. 24, 1979 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 69.

Albert was raised in Ricketts where his family operated a business. He received his formal education in the Ricketts public schools. He was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On April 1, 1931, Albert was united in marriage to Violet Krohnke at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. They farmed for a short time before going into the bulk oil business in Ricketts. Later they operated a service station in addition to the oil business. In 1954 Albert entered into a partnership with his son and in 1964 , turned the balance of the business over to his son. Albert was then associated with the West Central Development Corporation in various capacities until his retirement in 1975.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Richard Gene, and a brother Edlef. Survivors include, his wife Violet of Ricketts, two sons, Deane of Wichita, Kans. and Lyle of Denver. Also by four grandchildren, Lindy, Julie, Wendy, and Cary and one sister, Mrs. Mina Moeller of Roland Heights. Calif.

Funeral services were held April 26 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ricketts. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Donald Winterrowd officiated at the services.

Albert N. Paulsen (1898 - 1962)

Funeral services for Albert N. Paulsen were held Wednesday at the United Church of Christ (E&R). A duet composed of Mrs B. J. Behrmann and Mrs Ernie Grell sang two hymns. Rev. Walter Baumgartner read the following obituary:

Albert N. Paulsen was born November 11, 1898 in Morgan Township, Crawford County. He was the son of Nicklaus Paulsen and his wife Julia, nee Eggen. He attended rural school and grew up in Morgan Township. Albert was baptized and later confirmed in the local United Church of Christ. He has been an active member in the church, having served on the Church Council and at the time of his death he was a member of the Spiritual Council. He also served on the rural school board and was a trustee of the township.

He was united in marriage to Caroline Hansen on August 22, 1922. This union was blessed with four children. Twin daughters, who died in infancy, and one son and one daughter.

Mr and Mrs Paulsen spent their entire life in the Schleswig community first on their farm west of town and in 1950 they moved to their new home in the town of Schleswig. Albert was employed by the Green Bay Lumber Co. for a number of years and spent much of his time on the farm. He enjoyed good health and died unexpectedly early Sunday morning.

He leaves to mourn his passing: His wife, Caroline, one son, Eldo of Schleswig, one daughter, Ardene, Mrs Marvin Ballantine of Fort Meyers, Florida; four grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs Ella Wiedeman of Anthon, Mrs Hilda Engelking of Schleswig, Louise, Mrs Alfred Backhaus, of Ida Grove, Vernette, Mrs Edmund Stuhr of Rice, Washington, and one brother, Carl of Arthur, Iowa, and a large number of other relatives and friends.

Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery. The pallbearers were: Morrele Else, Roger L. Johannsen, Gail Nystom, Roger Paulsen, Edwin Backhaus and Elva Wiedemann. The honorary pallbearers were: Bernhard Jensen, Frank Jensen, W. H. Jensen. Hugo Jensen, Otto Wiebers, Lenard Kastner, Frank Peters, Gilbert Kastner, Harry Bielenberg and Alfred Else.

Albert Stoltenberg (1887 - 1967)

Funeral services for Albert Stoltenberg were held Wednesday, February 1, at the United Church of Christ with Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs John H. Evers, organist, accompanied Mrs Ray Martens and Mrs Ernie Grell who sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Beyond the Sunset."

Albert, son of Anton and Margaret nee Hinrich was born December 23, 1887 at Clinton. He was married to Leone Schmidt on December 22, 1915 at Schleswig. The couple have lived in Schleswig for the past 26 years. Albert Stoltenberg died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at Denison on January 30, 1967 from injuries suffered in an auto accident on November 4th.

He is survived by one daughter Marvella Voss, one son-in-law Erwin Voss and one grandchild, Lodean. Also survived by four sisters, Dora Everhart, Margaret Stoltenberg. Alma Casper, Meda Brockle, Melia Foell and two brothers, Herman and Otto. He was a member of the United Church of Christ.

He is preceded in death by his wife Leone On November 4, 1966, two brothers, three sisters and his parents. He attained the age of 79 years, one month and seven days.

Pallbearers were: Earl Baker, Glenn Evans, Harvey Mohr, Melvin Schultz, Edlef Jurgensen and Clarence Friedrichsen. Interment made in the Morgan Cemetery.

Alfred Backhaus (1891 - 1971)

Alfred Backhaus, 80, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Sunday, October 10, 1971, at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, October 13, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ida Grove with the Rev. Alfred Pautsch officiating. Burial was in the Ida Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Backhaus was born on January 27, 1891, in Morgan Township near Schleswig. He was married to Louise Paulsen on September 3, 1914, in Schleswig. He farmed near Ida Grove before retiring.

Survivors include: the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Enid Ferguson of La Jolla, California and Mrs. Junid Guess of Ontario, California; four sons, Edwin of Sioux City, Alden of Ida Grove, Charles of Orlando, Florida and Phillip of West Palm Beach, Florida; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marie (Mrs. Herman Rusch) of Mapleton, Mrs. Dora Wiebers and Clara (Mrs. Frank Jensen) both of Schleswig.

Alfred G. Rabe (1910 - 1974)

Alfred Gustav Rabe, son of Gustav J. and Welhelmina Schriver Rabe, was born on a farm near Ute, Iowa, on December 6, 1910, and died December 5, 1974, en route to Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa having attained the age of 63 years, 11 months and 29 days.

He was baptized December 18, 1910, by Reverend A. Amstein, and confirmed by Reverend Carl A. Krog, April 13, 1924, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ute. He attended Parochial schools in Ute. He farmed with his parents on a farm near Ute until the age of 14 years. He then moved with his parents to a farm a mile east and a mile north of Ricketts, and continued farming until the time of his death.

On December 15, 1940, he was united in marriage to Eleonora Meseck at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. They were blessed with four children, two sons and two daughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Sophie (Mrs. Edlef Westphalen) and one daughter, Joleen. Survivors include his wife, Eleonora, two sons, Delbert and Milroy, one daughter, Lois, all at home, nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 9, 1974 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township, with Reverend Mark Broecker officiating. Pallbearers were DuWayne Meseck, Gailen Meseck, Deryl Hennings. Warren Hennings, Harvey Hennings. Harry Westphalen and Larry Westphalen. Interment was made in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Alfred H. Stockfleth (1900 - 1969)

Alfred Hugo Stockfleth son of Fritz and Alvena Stockfleth was born April 5, 1900 at Schleswig, Iowa. As a boy he moved with his parents to Woodbury County where they farmed and resided in the Danbury and Moville areas for several years. From 1927 until 1936 he farmed with his brothers near Soldier. He also did carpenter work. For the past ten years he had made his home with his brother Elmer near Schleswig.

He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Faith in 1921 at Ute. He had been a longtime member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church at Mapleton and was a member of the Lutheran Laymens League.

Mr Stockfleth died on Friday, February 28, 1969 at a Sioux City hospital from head injuries sustained in a car-train accident at Onawa on Wednesday, February 26, 1969. He had reached the age of 68 years 10 months and 23 days.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Hollenbeck of Sioux City and Mrs. Frank (Doris) Sorensen of Lawton; four brothers Harold of Mapleton, Alvin and Elmer both of Schleswig and Ernest of California. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 3, 1969 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church with Paster E. E. Greene officiating. Interment was at St. Clair Cemetery at Ute, Iowa. Pallbearers were Gordon Nahnsen, Merrill Gran, Wilbur Jensen, Herbert Riessen, Louis Jacobsen and Harry Andersen.

Alfred J. Gluesing (1891 - 1972)

Alfred Jurgen Gluesing, son of Reimer and Sophie (Grill) Gluesing, was born on October 31, 1891, in Hanover Township, Crawford County, and died at his home on August 7, 1972. He had been in poor health in recent months and hospitalized at the local hospital several times.

He was married to Rosa Hammer on February 11, 1914. They lived on a farm near Schleswig, then farmed for 27 years Goodrich Township and for two years in Hanover Township, before moving to Denison in 1947. Mrs. Gluesing preceded him in death on December 7, 1963.

Mr. Gluesing was baptized in early infancy and later confirmed in Zion Lutheran Church where he was a member for many years. His funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church on Thursday morning with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Hymns were sung by Henry Henningsen accompanied by Mrs. Fred Rabe who served as organist. Interment was made in the Morgan Township Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers; Louis Hinricksen, Meinhardt Jaacks, James Keating, John McClellan, Marvine Petersen and Marvin Schwenn.

Surviving are a son, Arnold and a daughter, Esther. Mrs. George Maack, both of Denison, two grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; one brother, Arthur Gluesing of Soldier, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. Leona Grill of Denison.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Rosa, two sons, Vernon, who died in the Second World War and Edwin; one daughter Ruth who died in childhood; and one child died in infancy. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Gluesing was a member of the Denison Newspapers Seventy Year Club.

Alice (Rath) Popken (1896 - 1978)

Alice Popken, nee Rath, the daughter of August Rath and Johannah nee Harders was born at Bettendorf, Iowa on May 25, 1896. At an early age she moved with her parents to Crawford County where she attended school in Nishnabotny Township.

On Feb. 9, 1921, she was united in marriage with Arthur Popken of Denison. This union was blessed with three daughters. They made their home on the family farm in Goodrich Township until 1945 when they retired and moved to their present home in Denison. Mrs. Popken was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and continued to be a faithful member of the Zion congregation. She was a long time member of the Ladies Aid.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Arthur in 1974, her parents, an infant brother and two infant grandchildren. She is survived by her three daughters, Helen, Mrs. Veron Neumann of Denison, Lorraine, Mrs. Peter Schmidt of Hemet, Calif. and Maxine, Mrs. Howard Holmes of Denison. Also surviving are six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one brother, Harry Rath of Denison.

Alice had been in failing health the past several weeks, having been hospitalized in the Denison Hospital on two different occasions. On Mar. 16, she entered the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha where she died Mar. 23 at the age of 81 years.

Funeral services were held Mar. 26 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated at the services. Music for the services was provided by Mrs. Fred Rabe, organist and Henry Henningsen, soloist. Hymns of praise included Heaven Is My Home and How Great Thou Art and Abide With Me by the congregation. Pallbearers were Vernon Haase, Edmund Haase, Leslie Rath, Raymond Ruberg, Virgil Boeck and Joseph Griffin. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Alma (Schmadeke) Schultz (1897 - 1974)

Alma Ida Schultz, daughter of Henry Schmadeke and Wanda Van Tuil Schmadeke, was born on Jan. 29, 1897, at Schleswig. She died at St. Luke's hospital, Sioux City, on Jan. 26, 1974. Funeral services were held on her 77th birthday, Jan. 29.

She was baptized in 1897 at St. Paul's Church. Hanover Township by Reverend Carl Kunge. She was educated in the Lutheran School, Denison, and confirmed in 1911 by Reverend William Frehse.

In 1919 she married Henry Schultz of Kiron at Schleswig. They had two children, Ralph, and Ellen. For 29 years they farmed near Kiron, then retired and moved to Kiron where she lived until her death. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township, and also a member of the Ladies Aid since the time of her marriage.

Survivors include Ralph Schultz of Kiron, Mrs. Harold (Ellen) Henningsen of Denison, ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Albert (Clara) Hansohn of Kiron and Mrs. Gay (Eleanor) Howrie of La Porte City, and two brothers, Edwin Schmadeke of Schleswig and Albert of Alliance, Nebr.

Funeral services were held at the St. John's Lutheran Church on Jan. 29 with Rev. Vernon Dorn officiating. Burial was at the St. John's Lutheran cemetery. Maxwell Funeral Home, Denison, was in charge of arrangements.

Alma (Kahler) Schneider (1895 - 1966)

Funeral services were held for Alma Louise (nee Kahler) Schneider March 26 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Rev. C. W. Schmidt in charge. Mrs. Schneider died very suddenly at her home at 522 North Main Wednesday afternoon March 23.

Pallbearers were Herbert Andresen, Irwin Denker, Leslie Kruger, Marvin Lackman, John Lorenzen, and John Steckelberg. Mrs. Fred Rabe, organist, accompanied the Lutheran Ladies' choir. Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery.

Alma Louise (nee Kahler) Schneider, daughter of Jurgen Kahler and Anna Dorothea nee Herrmann, was born in Cedar county Iowa Nov. 24, 1895. On Dec. 21, 1918 she was united in marriage to Henry C. Schneider. Two children. Dorothy, now Mrs. Leonard C. Fritz and Vincent were born to them. She was active in community affairs being a member of the Lutheran Ladies Aid. Eventide Auxiliary, SNAP club, Chatter club and Jolly 12.

Preceding her in death were her parents, five brothers and three sisters. Survivors are her husband, two children, six grand children, two sisters. Mrs. Ernest (Friede) Anders of Okaben, Minn., and Mrs. Helen Finke of Portland, Ore.

Alvin T. Gloede (abt. 1922 - 1966)

Private funeral services were held Monday Oct. 10 at 2:30 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral home in Charter Oak for Alvin T. Gloede, 44.

Rev. Weise of Ricketts officiated at the services. Burial was at the Charter Oak Immanuel cemetery under the direction of Huebners.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Titus Gloede, his sisters and brothers, Mrs. Carl Bohlmann, Victor Gloede, Mrs. Jack Carlyle, Evelyn Gloede, Frances Gloede, Mrs. Wallace Sunders and Mrs. Harold Frehse.

Alwine (Teut) Eggen (abt. 1879 - 1962)

Mrs. John Eggen died at the Saunders Rest Home Friday, April 20 at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 13 days.

Alwine Teut, daughter of Peter Teut and his wife Sophia nee Boysen, was born near Lyons, Clinton county, Ia. At the age of two she came with her parents to Crawford county, living with them for one year in Hanover Township, then making her home in Soldier township.

She was married to John Eggen Sept. 26, 1900, a union to which five children were born. They farmed near, Charter Oak and Mapleton until 1940 when they came to Denison where she cared for her aged mother. In 1952 they went to make their home in Charter Oak until 15 months ago when they came to live at the Saunders Rest Home.

Mrs. Eggen was baptized as a small child and later confirm in the Lutheran faith in St. John's Lutheran church of Charter Oak. Her funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran church in Denison, April 23 with Rev. C. Schmidt officiating. Interment was made in St. John's cemetery at Charter Oak. Pallbearers were Raymond Else, Paul Kuhlmann Jr., Albert Paulsen, Alva Lill, Leonard Teut and Ralph Teut.

Her death is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Haidee Petersen of Charter Oak and Mrs. Helen Kroll and a son, Harold of Ute. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Otto and Albert Teut of Schleswig; Irwin of Ricketts: two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Lill of Denison and Mrs. Stella Hermcke of Holstein. Three sisters, one brother and two daughters. Mrs. Esther Braase and Mrs. Florence Paulsen, preceded her in death.

Amanda (Hennings) Fredericks (1887 - 1967)

Amanda Dorothy (Hennings) daughter of Chris and Mary Hennings was born Oct. 5, 1887 in Charter Oak township, Crawford county. In early infancy she was baptized and later confirmed in St. John Lutheran church at Charter Oak.

She was wed to Gill Fredericks on Feb. 23, 1910 and after their marriage resided on the farm in Hanover township. Mr. Fredericks preceded her in death in 1934. In 1941 Mrs. Fredericks came to make her home in Denison until going to live at Longview Nursing home in Missouri Valley three years ago. Here she died on March 20.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Florence Petersen of Denison, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Arnada Schraeder of Denison, three brothers, John of Denison, Justus of Crofton, Neb., and Walter of Redwood, Calif..

Her husband, one son, Walter, one granddaughter, Joleen Peterson, four brothers and one sister, preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Ladies Aid for which she was a member for many years. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church on March 22 at 2 p. m. with Rev. C. W. Schmidt in charge. Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery in Denison. Mrs. Fred Rabe was organist and hymns were sung by the Lutheran Ladies Choir. William Fredericks, Harry Fredericks, Ralph Hennings, Harvey Hennings, Earl Hennings and Robert Schraeder were pallbearers. Huebner Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

Amanda (Engelking) Getzmier (1896 - 1978)

Amanda Getzmier was born on August 6, 1896 near Ricketts, the daughter of Dietrich and Jacobena Engelking. She died or Wednesday morning, July 12, 1978 at Morningside Manor, Ida Grove, at the age of 81.

Amanda was raised on a family farm near Ricketts and received her formal education in the rural schools. She was baptized and later confirmed in the Christian faith.

On June 27, 1914 she was united in marriage to Julius Peters at Schleswig. They made their home on a farm near Schleswig.

In August 1951 Amanda was again united in marriage in Minnesota to Albert Getzmier. They made their home in Sioux City, until their retirement in 1965 when they returned to Schleswig.

In addition to her parents, Amanda was preceded in death by her husband Albert, three sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include, six sons, Verdus Peters of Denison; Palmer Peters of Charter Oak ; Logan Peters of Marshalltown, Julius Peters Jr. of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Gene Peters of Des Moines and Richard Peters of Schleswig and by one daughter, Loa Lane, Mrs. Paul Daly of Leawood, Kans. Also by twenty grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one brother, Alfred Engelking of Ida Grove.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 15, 1978 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Pallbearers included, grandsons, Gary Peters, Steven Peters, Craig Peters, Michael Peters, David Daly, and Randy Peters. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Amanda K. (Lafrentz) Grell (1885 - 1971)

Amanda Katherine Grell, daughter of Henry Lafrentz and Katherine nee Jurgensen, was born on the Isle of Fehmen Germany on April 24, 1885. In early infancy she was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. At, the age of 17 she came to America, making her home for some months in Marshalltown before coming to live in Crawford county.

She married John Grell on Nov. 7, 1903 with Rev. William Frese officiating, the first wedding that Rev. Frese performed in Denison. They lived on the farm near Buck Grove, then at Charter Oak and north of Dow City and also one year near Arion.

They lived on the farm near Buck Grove and here Mr. Grell died Dec. 8, 1935. In 1954 Mrs. Grell came to Denison. She had been in ill health the past year and died at the Denison hospital on Oct. 14, 1971 at the age of 86 years, five months and 20 days.

Funeral services were held Oct. 16 at the Zion Lutheran church in Denison with Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist, accompanied by Henry Henningsen who sang two hymns. Interment was made in the Morgan township cemetery with Fred Beeck, Arnold Grell, Ernie Grell, Leonard Marquardt, Verle Massman and Henry J. Schroeder serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include the following children, Fritz of Concord, Calif., John of Denison, Helen, Mrs. Jack Lambert of of Dow City, Walter of Vail, Richard of Omaha, 27 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Dora Schroeder at Eventide in Denison. Preceding her in death was her husband, a daughter Mrs. Lydia Wittock and a granddaughter that died in infancy, a brother Henry Lafrentz and two sisters. Mrs. Margaret Beeck and Mrs Lena Miller.

Timothy J. Petersen (1959 - 1970)

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 7, 1970 for Timothy J. Petersen at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. The hymns Nearer, My God, to Thee and Be Still, My Soul were sung by the congregation and the choir respectively. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was organist.

Timothy Joseph, son of Melvin and Marcella Petersen was born on October the 9th, 1959 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital. He was baptized there by Pastor C. W. Schmidt in an emergency baptism. He grew up in this community, attending the local school. At the time of his death, he was in the 4th grade at School and in the Lutheran Sunday School. He died in a tragic accident east of Schleswig Sunday, January 4.

He is survived by his parents one sister, Susan. and two brothers, Keith and Kerry. He attained 10 years. 2 months and 25 days.

Pallbearers were Glenn Pollock, Dennis Miller, Rick Namanny, Larry Namanny, Darrell Petersen, and Douglas Hollander. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Tony G. Hansen (1891 - 1973)

Tony G. Hansen was born in Otter Creek Township on July 27, 1891. His parents were the late Peter Hansen and Louise Hansen nee Eggen.

On August 23, 1911, he married Mary Janssen and they farmed in Ida County and Crawford County until moving to Schleswig twenty seven years ago. Mr. Hansen was an officer of Farmers Mutual Insurance Co., until retiring this year from the office of vice president. He was associated with that firm for over thirty-five years. He had held numerous offices in community organizations through the years. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and remained a faithful member of the United Church of Christ until his death.

Mr. Hansen passed away on Monday, February 19, 1973, after suffering a fall in his home on Saturday, February 17. He attained the age of 81 years, 6 months and 18 days.

He is survived by his wife Mary; one son, Orville; one daughter, LaVerna Jensen; four grandchildren; five great- grandchildren; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 22, 1973, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. John Evers was the organist. Mrs. Harlan Buffum and Mrs. Don Meyer sang Rock of Ages and In the Garden. Pallbearers were: Oran Kuehl, Allen Janssen, Walter Jessen, Glenn Janssen, Richard Hansen and Walter Friedrichsen. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery.

Troy L. Lafrentz (1968 - 2006)

Troy Lawayne Lafrentz was born March 11, 1968, the son of Delbert and Rita Friedrichs Lafrentz. He died Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at his home in Deloit, Iowa at the age of thirty-eight. Troy was born in Onawa, Iowa and was baptized in Christ at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa on March 31, 1968. He was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak on May 23, 1982. He received his education in the Charter Oak -Ute Schools, graduating with the class of 1986. After graduation, Troy attended college at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, Iowa for one year. He then moved to Des Moines where he worked briefly, later moving back to the area where he worked at Farmland Foods, Inc. He retired from Farmland in 2005 due to health reasons.

On July 25, 2003 Troy was united in marriage to Bernice Gurske. The couple made their home in Deloit, Iowa.

In his spare time, Troy enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, cooking, and grilling. He was famous for his backyard barbeques and smoked foods. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan and was a member of the Deloit Fire Department. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, Cammerin and Angelea.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, William and Erna Friedrichs; his paternal grandmother, Ethel Lafrentz; and his aunt, Lavaughn Schultz. He is survived by his wife Bernice of Deloit; two step-children: T.J. Palmer, his special friend, Melanie Mink of Denison; Becky Palmer and her special friend Joel Robinson of Des Moines; two grandchildren: Cammerin Palmer of Denison; and Angelea Robinson of Des Moines; his parents, Delbert and Rita Lafrentz of Mapleton, Iowa; two brothers: Todd and his wife, Sarah of Fremont, California; Trent and his wife, Carissa of Moline, Illinois; one sister, Tricia Lafrentz and her significant other, Michael Wingfield of Phoenix, Arizona; his niece and nephew, Elizabeth Rae and Brody Troy Lafrentz; his grandfather, Harvey Lafrentz of Onawa, Iowa; and Bernice's grandmother, Janie Prott; his mother-in-law, Barb Gurske; one sister-in-law, Brenda Stephens and her husband, Bill all of Eagle River, Wisconsin; and a special family friend, Lilly Lee of Boone, Iowa; his aunts and uncles; other relatives and many friends.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 11, 2006 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Mark Hansen officiated the service. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns, Beautiful Savior and Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound. Those serving as pallbearers were: Bill Stephens, Tony Johnson, Korey Meseck and Kyle Schultz. The Deloit Fire Department served as honorary pallbearers. The family invited everyone in attendance to the Deloit Community Building for fellowship and lunch, served by Faith Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Vernace Harm (1923 - 1964)

Vernace Robert Harm, son of, William Harm and his wife, Minnie, nee Kunze, was born Sept. 27, 1923 in Goodrich Township, Crawford County.

He was married to Norma Kastner on July 1, 1945 and to this marriage four children were born. They farmed in Otter Creek Township until 1962. when they moved to the farm in Hanover Township. His death came as the result of an auto accident on Thursday night, Oct. 15, near Denison. Vernace Harm was baptized in infancy and later affiliated with the Lutheran Church by the rite of confirmation in 1938.

His funeral service was held at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison on Oct. 19 with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Interment was made in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens with the following serving as bearers. Marvin Baker, Hans Jess, Ray Kollbaum, Gilbert Nissen, Charles Siegert and Virgil Winquist.

Surviving his death are his widow, Norma; four children, all at home: Charles, Sheri, Carol and Clark; his mother, Mrs. Minnie Harm of Denison; two brothers, Irwin of Schleswig and Wilbur of Denison. His father and one sister preceded him in death.

Vernetta (Grell) Borgstahl (1920 - 1983)

Vernetta Borgstahl, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Grell, was born March 20, 1920 on a farm in Hamilton, N.D. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended Lutheran and public schools.

On June 10, 1936 she was united in marriage to Roland Borgstahl at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. This union was blessed with two sons. They made their home in Denison until 1958 when they moved to Omaha, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a infant son. Memorial services were held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Omaha on March 8 at 7:30. Funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran Church March 9 at 1 p.m. in Denison. Interment in the Morgan Township Cemetery in Schleswig. Roeder Mortuary of Omaha, Neb. was in charge of the arrangements.

Vernette (Hansen) Nehls (1925 - 1986)

Vernette Ida Lena Hansen Nehls was born on a farm near Denison in Goodrich Township on Feb. 10, 1925 and died Sept. 5, 1986 at the St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha, Ne., after a prolonged illness, at the age of 61 years, six months and twenty-six days.

She was the daughter of Charles E. Hansen and Katie Voss Christiansen Hansen. Vernette was confirmed April 2, 1939 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She attended rural schools and lived and worked with her parents and also for Max Kropf prior to her marriage to Virgil M. F. Nehls of Denison on Aug. 14, 1949.

They made their home on the farm near Denison until Virgil's death, July 11, 1976. She later moved to Denison with her daughter Kathy. After moving here she was employed at the Huebner Funeral Home. She was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid and taught Sunday School for several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Survivors include her two daughters; Diane, Mrs. Melvin Smith of Lincoln, Neb., and Kathy Sherman of Denison; one grandson, Kevin Smith and one granddaughter Lisa Sherman. Two brothers, Vernon Hansen and his wife Bette of Denison; Raymond Hansen and his wife Elvira of Denison; two sisters, Anna and her husband J, Henry Schroeder of Schleswig; and Mrs. Elsie Schroeder of Schleswig; several Cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Sept. 8, at 2 p.m, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Rev. Donald Fraker officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Willis Ahrenholtz, Wilbert Groth, Leo Lapke, Melvin Petersen, Martin Schneider and Walt Woebke. Funeral arrangements. were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Vernis L. Aldag (1923 - 2004)

Vernis Leroy Aldag was born January 3, 1923, the son of Henry M. and Louise Marth Aldag. He died, Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at the Horn Memorial Hospital, Ida Grove, Iowa at the age of eighty-one.

Vernis was baptized in Christ, February 11, 1923 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and confirmed, March 21, 1937 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Grant Township, Ida Grove, Iowa. He received his education at Hayes No. 9 School in Ida County near his home.

On May 14, 1944, Vernis was united in marriage to Marilyn Calvin. The couple made their home on a farm near Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of three children. Vernis was later married to Marlene Mussler on December 30, 1963 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.

Vernis was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and the Schleswig Community Club. He enjoyed fishing, socializing in a game of cards with friends and his involvement with the Schleswig Calf Day Celebration. In his later years, Vernis looked forward to spending his birthday and Christmas with his children and grandchildren.

Vernis was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marlene in 1986, two brothers, Walter and Louis and one sister, Edna Gronau. Survivors include two sons, Wayne Aldag of San Jacinto, California; Allen Aldag and his wife, Elizabeth of San Gabriel, California; one daughter, Nancy Aldag and her husband, Ronald of Apple Valley, California; eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Theodore Aldag of Schleswig; one brother-in-law, Vernie Gronau of Kiron; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 26, 2004 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Grant Township, Ida Grove, Iowa. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns What a Friend We Have in Jesus, Just as I Am, Without One Plea and Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound. Honorary pallbearers were: Stacy Carmody, Traci Matela, Wendy Whelan, Cheri Dunn, Kari Aldag and Lori Teper. Pallbearers were: Matthew Aldag, Grant Clausen, Scott Schultz, Jason Aldag, James Aldag and Bruce Aldag. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Vernon O. Neumann (1923 - 2000)

Vernon Otto Edward Neumann was born on June 13, 1923, the son of John and Alfreida Miller Neumann. He died at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha Friday, January 14, 2000 at the age of seventy-six.

Vernon was born near Manilla where he lived with his parents on a farm and received his education in rural schools in that area. Later they moved to a farm northwest of Denison. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and on August 25, 1946 he was united in marriage there with Helen Popken by Rev. Schmidt.

The couple made their home on the Popken farm northwest of Denison until moving to their present home in Denison in February 1973. After moving to Denison Vernon worked for Bohlmanns, the Huebner Funeral Home, and for the past nineteen years had worked at WESCO where he drove their truck and helped supervise the clients, who loved him dearly.

Vernon was a faithful life long member of Zion Lutheran Church where he ushered for many years and also served as trustee. He was a member of Zion Men's Club and Fellowship Club. He served on the REC Board of Directors for thirty-six years as Secretary-Treasurer.

He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who had a special sense of humor which everyone enjoyed. In earlier years his hobbies included motorcycle trips with friends. He enjoyed traveling and last summer spending time with family and friends at Yellow Smoke. He especially liked having coffee with friends at Ampride. He always found time to help with tasks on the farm.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Terry in infancy. Survivors include his wife, Helen of Denison; one daughter, Connie Martens and her husband, Clark of Denison; three grandsons, Cary Martens and his wife, Kellie of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Todd Martens and his wife, Candace of Deloit; Eric Martens and his wife, Terri of Denison; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Harvey Neumann and his wife, Leora of Denison; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 18, 2000 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated the services and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, Garden of the Good Shepherd in Denison. Organist Jeanette Venzke provided the accompaniment for soloist Larry Boeck as he sang How Great Thou Art and The Old Rugged Cross and for the congregational hymn I Know that My Redeemer Lives. Those serving as pallbearers were: Lowell Neumann, Timothy Martens, Carey Martens, Todd Martens, Merel Holmes and Eric Martens. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Dorcas Society and the Evening Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Viola (Boyens) Jess (1916 - 1996)

Viola Jess was born November 6, 1916, the daughter of Lorenz and Minnie Ludwig Boyens. She died at the Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View, Iowa, on Wednesday, August 14, 1996, at the age of seventy-nine.

Viola was born near Ricketts, Iowa and was baptized in Christ at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa, by Rev. Frese and later confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak. She received her education at the Immanuel Lutheran School, Soldier Township.

After her education, Viola helped on the family farm until her marriage to Fred Jess on July 6, 1936, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township. The couple made their home on a farm in Crawford County until 1955 when they moved to Colorado, where Viola was employed as a housekeeper by the University of Colorado. In 1962, the couple returned to Crawford County and made their home in Ricketts.

Viola was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ricketts, their Ladies Aid and the Senior Citizens. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who was very caring of her family. In her leisure time, Viola enjoyed fishing, playing cards and loved cooking, especially preparing a special dessert for each of her children.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband in 1985. Survivors include four daughters, Janice Peterson and her husband, Dale; Carol Domino and her husband, Burdette, all of Sac City; Jerrie Wigg and her husband, Glenn; Julie Teut and her husband, Lowell, all of Schleswig; sixteen grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren; also one sister, Irene Jensen of Ricketts and one brother, Ray Boyens of Charter Oak.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 17, 1996, at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Marlene Lee provided the organ accompaniment for granddaughter, Bambi Schrader singing, "Amazing Grace" and congregational hymn "How Great Thou Art". Those serving as Honorary Pallbearers were Patrick Laursen, Bambi Schrader, Nancy Bellcock, Jerod Petersen, Kandi Kolpin, Keri Petersen, Bridget Baer, Vicki Dehner, Tracy Kuehl, Kelli Marte and Randy Kuehl. Pallbearers were Mark Peterson, Dave Schrader, Robin Kolpin, Brandon Wigg, Kim Laursen and Brett Wigg. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. Viola M. (Osterlund) North (1923 - 2005)

Viola Mae North was born March 21, 1923, the daughter of Louie Clarence and Leta Mae Wescott Osterlund. She died Monday, March 14, 2005 at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of eighty-one. Viola was born on a farm northwest of Vail, Iowa. She received her education in a rural school near her home and the Vail Public School graduating with the class of 1939.

On August 31, 1939, Viola was united in marriage to Lorne North in Minden, Iowa. They spent a two day honeymoon at the Iowa State Fair accompanied by Lorne's parents. Viola and Lorne settled on a farm near Deloit until 1941 when they purchased a farm west of Vail. In 1968 they moved to Denison, where Lome was engaged in auctioneering and real estate business. Viola and Monica Kuehl purchased the Two Minys Clothing Store in Denison in 1967 which they operated for eighteen years before retiring.

Viola was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Vail. She was a member of the Olive Branch of Eastern Star, in Vail Iowa; the Denison Chamber of Commerce; and the Denison Country Club. She enjoyed going to Lake Okoboji, spending the summer week-ends there and wintering in Mesa, Arizona for the last twenty years. In her leisure time, she loved to golf, play bridge and going to the Casino.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband in 1999; one brother, Melvin Osterlund and his wife, Opal; sister-in-law, Margaret Mary (Muggy) Osterlund; brothers-in-law, William Bell, Howard Brantz and Harold Eggers.

Survivors include two sons, Robert North and his wife, Hazel of Pilot Mound, Iowa; Rick North of Omaha; one daughter, Janice Lea and her husband, Gene of Honey Creek, Iowa; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Robert North Jr. and his wife, Lori and their children, Mason and Morgan of Ankeny; Rosaland Zils and her husband, Rob and their son, Jacob of Buffalo, Minnesota; Randall North and his wife, Debbie and their son, Daniel of London, England; Kevin Lea of Omaha, Nebraska; Timothy Lea of Honey Creek, Iowa; Kristopher Lea and his wife, Angela and their son, Karson of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Lyndsey North of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Corey North of Omaha, Nebraska; one brother, Louis Osterlund and his wife, Pat of Vail; three sisters-in-law, Louise Osterlund of Denison; Carol Brantz of Council Bluffs, and Lois Bell of Vail; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 AM., Monday, March 21, 2005 at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail, Iowa. Dr. Richard Shaffer officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Vail Cemetery. Rev. Glenn Rankin provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Sandi Agan singing "Tell Me Why" and "On Eagle's Wings" and congregational hymns "Amazing Grace! How Sweet the Sound" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Pallbearers were: Robert North Jr., Lyndsey North, Kristopher Lea, Randall North, Corey North, Rosaland Zils, Kevin Lea and Timothy Lea. A Eastern Star Service was held at 7 P.M., Sunday evening at the Huebner Funeral Home. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch, served by the United Presbyterian Women. Virgil R. Denker (1933 - 1988)

Virgil R. Denker was born at Denison, Iowa, June 9, 1933, the son of Max and Pauline Thomsen Denker. He was baptized July 22, 1933 at Zion Lutheran Church and confirmed at the same church March 21, 1948. He was raised on the family farm northwest of Denison, receiving his education in the rural schools and the Denison High School, graduating with the class of 1951. Following his schooling and prior to his marriage he farmed with his father and worked in Omaha, Nebraska.

On November 15, 1953, Virgil was united in marriage with Phyllis Genzen at Manning, Iowa. This union was blessed with five daughters, Rhonda, Deanna, Linda, Lori, and Lisa. Since February of 1955, the Denkers have made their home on their present farm northwest of Denison. In addition to farming his own land which he dearly loved, Virgil did a lot of custom farm work.

Virgil was stricken February 11, and his death was pronounced Saturday evening, February 20, 1988, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his passing he had attained the age of 54 years, 8 months, and 11 days.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where in earlier years he had served as an usher, and was currently a member of the Men's Club. He was an avid bowler and had bowled in several leagues through the years, and was a member of the Crawford County Pork Producers, serving as a director of that group for six years.

Virgil was preceded in death by his father, Max Denker. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Phyllis Denker of rural Denison, their five daughters, Rhonda and husband John Cool of Denison, Deanna and husband Kirby Lownes of Gilbert, Iowa, Linda and husband Tony Mullenger of Denison, Lori and husband Scott Schneckloth of Manilla, and Lisa Denker of Sioux City, Iowa, eleven grandchildren, his mother, Pauline Denker of Denison, father and mother-in-law Lester and Irene Genzen of Manning, two brothers, Clarence Denker and his wife Alma of rural Denison, Elmer and his wife Joyce of Denison, and two sisters, Virgene and husband Wes Ahrenholtz of Manilla and Ruby and husband John Lorenzen of Denison. Also surviving are aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Walter H. Petersen (1910 - 1985)

Walter H. Petersen was born on November 10, 1910, Soldier Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of John and Meta Hansen Petersen. He died Saturday morning September 28, 1985 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 74.

Walter spent his formative years on a family farm in Soldier Township. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. He was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Trinity Lutheran Church, Grant Township.

Walter was united in marriage to Elsie Fredericks on March 20, 1935 at the Zion Lutheran parsonage by Rev. William Frese. Together they made their home on a farm in Hanover Township where they farmed for twenty-one years before moving to the town of Denison. Walter was later employed by Crawford County for twenty-three years before retiring 1976.

In addition to his parents was preceded in death by one son Jerry in 1945 and one daughter Joan in 1950. Survivors include his wife Elsie of Denison, and two sons, Lyle and wife Joyce of Charter Oak, and Gene and wife Eloise of Churdan, Iowa. He is further survived by nine grandchildren, three great granddaughters, one brother Richard of Charter Oak and one step-sister Mrs. Garnet Wilt of Omaha, Nebraska, as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 1, 1985, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Interment was in the SI. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery near Charter Oak. The Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist for the services with Mrs. Elizabeth Kuehl serving as soloist. Hymns for the services included How Great Thou Art and Tender Shepherd, Thou Hast Stilled. Serving as pallbearers for the services were Raymond Fredericks, Jr., Richard Fredericks, Jeff Suntken, Glenn Petersen, Larry Petersen, and Lloyd Petersen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Walter W. Plotz (1917 - 1983)

Walter William Plotz was born on a farm in Hayes Township, Crawford County, Iowa, Oct. 2, 1917, the son of William Henry and Julia Weinbrandt Plotz. He was baptized on Dec. 2, 1917 and in 1932, was confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. As a young boy his family moved to Denison where Walter attended the Zion Lutheran School for eight years and the Denison High School. After his schooling be was employed at the Tenhulzen Hatchery in Denison.

On March 7, 1942, Walter was united in marriage with Margaret Nurse at Omaha, Nebr. They made their home or a brief time in St. Louis, Mo. before Walter went to the service. He served his country for four years during World War II, serving in the United States Army Air Force. Following his discharge from the service in 1946, Walter and Margaret moved to Denison.

He learned the carpentry trade and was employed for several years with Walt Hass Construction in Denison, before he became a self-employed carpenter. Walter then owned and operated Plotz Floor Service for 15 years before semi- retiring in 1979. Since his retirement they continued to reside in Denison, spending the winter months in the warmer climates, this year in Phoenix, Ariz. It was at the St. Luke's Hospital. in Phoenix that Walter died April 8, 1983,following surgery. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 65 years, six months, and six days.

Walter was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison having taught the High School Bible Class for many years and was presently a member of the Voters Assembly. Walter had a lifelong interest in Boy Scouts and was awarded the Eagle Scout. He served as Scoutmaster for many years and served on the the Mid America Council Advisory Board of Scouting. He was also awarded the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award presented for Volunteer Scouters. He was a member of the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa, and a long-standing member of the International Streamline Royal Rovers Travel Trailer Club, having served as their International President in 1978.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Denison, one, daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Rev. Jack Mayfield of Ackley, three: granddaughters, Joe'l, Deborah and Sarah Mayfield, and one brother, LeRoy Plotz of Jefferson. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, other relatives and friend.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., April 13, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Jack D. Heck officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Robert Arnold singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" and the congregation singing "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Mrs. Fred Rabe was organist. Honorary bearers were Frank Perruzi, Sam Kracht, Richard Boeck, Russell Hyde, James R. Lodwick, and Lorne North. Pallbearers included Eldor Schwitzer, Lyle Thomas, William Walsh, Marcus Christiansen, Otto Rassmussen, and Ray Franck. Burial with Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Pfannebecker-Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

William F. Boger (1897 - ?)

William Fritz Boger, son of Fritz Boger and his wife, Ida nee Schlueter, was born in Paradise Township on Jan. 14, 1897. He was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

He married Florence Schwiesow in 1920 and they made their home in Paradise Township. They remained on the farm until 1960 when they retired to Charter Oak. Mrs. Boger preceded him in death in 1964. Mr. Boger died June 9 in Charter Oak.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. John (Mildred) Carstens of Yale, and Mrs. Caroll (Audrey) Steffen of Charter Oak and one son, Gerald Boger of Denison, ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren, five sisters, Mrs. Ella Schramm, Denison, Mrs. Hilda Kahl of Manning, Mrs. Anna Koch of Denison, Mrs. Amanda Hintz of Mapleton and Mrs. Hattie Kahl of Buck Grove. Preceding him in death were his wife, Florence, his parents, one sister, Mrs. Minnie Petersen and one brother, Herman.

Funeral services were held at, the Zion Lutheran Church on Tuesday, June 11 with Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Burial was at the Memorial Heights Cemetery. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of services.

William T. Kroeger (1889 - 1971)

William T. Kroeger, son of Peter and Nancy (Boysen) Kroeger was born on a farm in Crawford County near Ricketts on March 7, 1889. He attended rural schools and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith.

On June 21, 1910, he was united in marriage by Rev. Frehse to Catherine Dorenkamp, of Belmond, Iowa, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They made their home on a farm near Ricketts. To this union two sons and two daughters were born. In 1942 he retired from farming and they made home in Ricketts. On June 21, 1960 they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Mr. Kroeger has been in the Willow Dale Nursing Home at Battle Creek the past year due to ill health.
He passed away Sunday evening, April 18, at the age of 82 years, 1 month and 11 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Ethel, sisters Julia and Elsie and one brother Hans. He is survived by his wife Katie, one daughter, Mrs. Delores Ewoldt of Ricketts; two sons, Peter of Cedar Falls and Arlo of Denison; 7 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, one brother, Hugo of Long Beach, California; one sister Alvena, Mrs. Alvena Lohse of Schleswig; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and many friends.

William A. Asmus (1903 - 1978)

William Henry Asmus was born June 4, 1903 at Washington Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of William and Anna Schurke Asmus. He died Dec. 4 1978 at Horn Memorial Hospital, Ida Grove, at the age of 75.

Bill was raised in Paradise Township, Crawford County, Iowa on a family farm. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. During the years of his confirmation he attended the Lutheran School in Denison.

On Nov. 22, 1924, Bill was united in marriage to Gertrude Schneider at Denison. They made their home on a farm in East Boyer Township until 1939 when they moved to Schleswig where Bill was a plumber for over 20 years. In 1961 they moved to Long Beach, Calif. They continued to make their home in California until 1967 when they retired and returned to Schleswig. Bill has since continued to make Schleswig his home, where he was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son Billy, two grandchildren in infancy and two brothers.

Also by 28 grandchildren, 17 great- grandchildren, his stepmother, Mrs. Maurine Asmus of Brookings, S.D., two sisters, Elfrieda Hopp and Edna Wulf, both of , Denison, two brothers, Marvin of Clinton and Loren of Redding, Calif., four half-sisters, Arlene Miller, LaVonne Lane, Lois Teal and Mary Steraud and three half brothers, Harold, Alvin and Deweyne, all of Brookings, S.D.

Funeral services were held Dec. 26, at 2:00 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Theodore Letzring officiated at the services. Pallbearers included grandsons, Jim Schmidt, Allan Wiebers, Tony Kastner, William Berg, Randy Clausen and John Lantz. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home, Schleswig.

William A. Boyens (1908 - 1986)

William A. Boyens was born on August 1, 1908 in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Hans and Mary Johannsen Boyens. He died Wednesday morning, April 9, 1986 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 77 years, eight months, and eight days.

William spent his early years on his family's farm in Goodrich Township and later moved with them to a farm in Hanover Township. He was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He received his formal education at the Zion Lutheran School.

William was united in marriage to Elise Hildebrandt on February 11, 1931 at the Zion Lutheran parsonage by Rev. William Frese. They made their home on a farm near Buck Grove where they lived for six years. In 1937 they made their home in Denison where William owned and operated a trucking company. for twenty years. They later owned and operated Sandbar Beach Resort at Spirit Lake for twelve years. It was during this time that William also worked part time during the winter months as a maintenance man at Jo-Mart Steak House. William was also known for the construction work he did in the Denison area.

In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Herman.

Survivors include his wife Elise of Denison, one sister Minnie Schwitzer and brother-in-law Rudolph of Denison. He is further survived by his brother-in-law Emil Hildebrandt of Denison and three sisters-in-law, Ella Eggert and Minnie Boyens of Denison, and Florence Hildebrandt of Charter Oak, as well as a number of nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
