R., depots 14 miles apart, in Crawford county, of which it is the judicial seat, 65 miles northeast of Council Bluffs, 135 northwest of Des Moines, and 424 northwest of Chicago. It is lighted by electricity, has telephone facilities, an excellent system of water works, a normal college completed at a cost of $35,000, 7 churches, good public schools, a public library, an opera house, 3 banks and 3 newspapers. It was first laid out in 1867, became the county seat shortly afterwards and was incorporated as a town in 1875. Ships grain, butter, eggs, poultry, flour and live stock. Tel., W. U. Exp., Am.
