Willow Township Cemetery

Willow Township

A Special Cemetery in Native Prairie Land

The Willow Township cemetery is located on the east side of Street 130 and one quarter mile south of Ave P. The cemetery is owned by Willow Township and the Crawford County Conservation Board manages the native prairie at the cemetery.

Glenn Pollock, a Crawford County native, who lived in Omaha, visited the Willow cemetery sometime in the mid 1980s. He saw the cemetery covered in native prairie vegetation. He explained the natural area he had found to the Willow Township trustees, The Nature Conservancy, and the Crawford County Conservation Board. The Willow Township trustees agreed to permit the County Conservation Board to manage the cemetery as a prairie. (Source: DesMoines Register, May 28, 1989)

The Willow Cemetery is owned by the township, but the Conservation Board has the surface permission for the native prairie. The native prairie is in the area of the cemetery where there is no known burials. The cemetery is mowed during the year and encroaching brush is removed.

The deed for the land was transferred on 22 March 1881 from William E. Austin to the Willow Township for the five acres of land in the SW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Sec 22 in T83, R41 for the sum of $50.

The cemetery is divided into two parts with the north 2 1/2 acres being the native prairie and south 2 1/2 acres being the platted and maintained cemetery known in the record book as Division B. The platted portion contains 150 blocks which measure 16 feet by 16 feet and originally would hold 8 graves.

The, blocks, which are now shown on the listing of burials, begin with number 1 in the north east corner of the platted section and go west to number 10; then the next set begins just south of 10 with number 11 and returns east to number 20; and continues in this back and forth style until ending with 150 near the gate into the cemetery in the southwest corner.

A number of the stones are or are becoming unreadable in part and several stones are totally unreadable. The written cemetery records include the names of the lot owners. Most of the entries in the written records are from someone walking the cemetery in the 1980s and recording the stones as well as several lists of names from the court house death records or family member statements.
