Hannah M. (Schouten) Duncan

Hannah Marie Schouten was one of three children of James Schouten and Mary Ann Nessle of Halfmoon, Saratoga Co., NY. She, along with her two siblings; William Nessle Schouten and Phoebe Jane (Jennie) Schouten, encountered happy moments, grief, and sadness.

The Schouten family migrated from New York when Hannah was four. They lived in Arcola, Illinois for a spell, but after Hannah married Joseph Porter Duncan.( 05 Oct 1870 ), they decided to travel further west to a new land-Iowa. After travelling by covered wagon, they settled about six miles west of the small town of Denison. Seven children were born into the union of Hannah and J.P.Duncan.

This memoir is about Hannah's family, life, and the difficult journey they encountered. She speaks of singing Lincoln campaign songs, the movement west, railroad expansion, world war, depression, prairie fires and Indians. As she nears the end of her journey, she finds achievement, meaning, and peace in her life.

Hannah was my great grandfather William Nessles Schouten's sister. She represents strength, integrity, and a wonderful spirit. She lived during a great time in history and surely demonstrated great courage to all who knew her.
