In Civil War, fought for South. Was imprisoned at the old McDowell College in St. Louis MO, & Alton (IL) Penitentiary. Ran underground railroad; swam the Illinois River, liberating 60 men. Later was held at Keokuk, escaping after 10 days. There was a $1,000 reward for his capture, dead or alive. Democrat. Reorganized church of Latter Day Saints. |
