JAMES LAWRENCE2 CHAPMAN (JOHN1) was born 15 Mar 1816 in New Market, Shenandoah, Virginia, and died 22 May 1879 in DeWitt, IA. He married MALINDA ANN CARSON 14 Feb 1838 in New Market, Rockingham, Virginia, daughter of THOMAS CARSON and CATHERINE KINDELL. She was born 15 Jan 1822 in Shenandoah, New Market, VA, and died 19 Nov 1910 in Dewitt, Clinton, IA.
Notes for JAMES LAWRENCE CHAPMAN: He was a miller
James Chapman was listed in the Rockingham County, Virginia 1850 census, but by 1860 they had moved to Iowa as they were listed in the Clinton County census. A Post Office was established in what was called the Virginia Settlement and was called Orange. The Chapmans built a ferry bridge across the river and it was a crossing for many wagons bound for the western settlements. It was torn down in 1973. James is buried in the Smith cemetery; also know as The Virginia Settlement Cemetery. He was 63 years old when he died. The issue in the newspaper (Observer) had this write up of James when he died: James L. Chapman, living in Orange Township; who for some months past has been almost entirely
MALINDA ANN2 CARSON (THOMAS1) was born 15 Jan 1822 in Shenandoah, New Market, VA, and died 19 Nov 1910 in Dewitt, Clinton, IA. She married JAMES LAWRENCE CHAPMAN 14 Feb 1838 in New Market, Rockingham, Virginia, son of JOHN CHAPMAN and CATHERINE. He was born 15 Mar 1816 in New Market, Shenandoah, Virginia, and died 22 May 1879 in DeWitt, IA.
1. LETICIA JANE3 CHAPMAN (JAMES LAWRENCE2, JOHN1) was born 1853 in New Market, Shenandoah, VA, and died 21 May 1879 in Clinton County, IA.
Notes for LETICIA JANE CHAPMAN: Leticia was in her early 20s when she died; perhaps of rickets. She was an invalid and never walked. In the 1860 Rockingham, VA census, she was listed as dumb. She is buried in the Smith Cemetery new Grand Mound, Iowa, beside her parents.
