Rafferty - Mannion

Following are URL addresses for some family photos, including some that are unidentified.

As a little history, James (or, possibly John) and Elizabeth Rafferty immigrated from Ireland (before 1843) and came to Clinton, Iowa, (before 1870) via upstate New York and Canada (where their children were born).  They are buried in the Clinton Catholic Cemetery.  The Rafferty’s were a railroading family.  James was an engineer on steam locomotives.  His sons also worked on the railroad.

Their oldest son, John F. Rafferty, died in 1873 as a result of the first railroad robbery by the Jesse James gang near Adair, Iowa.  John is buried in the Clinton Catholic Cemetery. Peter lived in Clinton until his death in 1920 and is buried in the Clinton Catholic Cemetery.

Dennis married Ellen Fitzgerald in Boone, Iowa, in 1880, and or a time lived in Omaha, Nebraska, before returning to live in Boone.  They had four children.  After 1920, Dennis and Ellen moved to Rockwell City, Iowa.  They both died in 1939 are buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Boone, Iowa.

The two Rafferty daughters are pictured on the website  http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marier/Mannion/james-jr.htm

Alice E. Rafferty married Peter J. Scanlan in the early 1870’s.  They had 8 children and remained in Clinton, Iowa, where they were co-owners of Scanlan and Mooney, a grocery store at 824 3rd Street during the 1880-90’s. Alice, d. 1935, and Peter, d. 1926, and are buried in the Clinton Catholic Cemetery.

Mary Ann Rafferty married James P. Manion on March 15, 1867 in Clinton, Iowa.  They lived in Harrison, Boone County, Iowa, and later moved to Omaha, Nebraska, and Council Bluffs, Iowa.  They had six children.  They died in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area.

The first picture on the attached site appears to be one of the Rafferty daughters…which one is uncertain.
