Obituary 1: 29 Mar 1933, Clinton Herald Newspaper (Source: "Obituary," John
Calvin Howard a pioneer resident of the county died at 8:30 o'clock last
evening in the home, 2230 Liberty avenue at the age of 88 years. The body will
repose in the home until Friday after which services will be held at 2:30 p.m.
in the Rockwell Mortuary chapel, the Rev. C. O. Beagle officiating. John
Calvin Howard was born March 25, 1845 in Green county, New York and came to
Iowa at an ear ly age, his parents settling in Camanche. As a youth he worked
in the sawmills of Clinton and later in the Peterson Bell box factory retiring
at the age of 75 years. He hauled the stone used in the foundation of the
first public school building in Clinton, the present Washington building. He
was one of the few survivors of the Camanche tornado of 1870 (should read
1860). He was married March 27 1864, to Julia Etta Hatfield who became the
mother of four children, three surviving, Nelson Howard, Mrs. Jessie Goddard
and Mrs. Musa Runyon, all of Clinton. Mrs. Howard died in 1877. In 1879 he was
married to Anna Miller who became the mother of six children, four surviving:
Mrs. Elizabeth Healless, Mrs. Gertrude Meinert, Mrs. Minney Cawley and Mrs.
Pearl Jeffers, all of Clinton. She died in 1892 and in 1900 he was married to
Flora Feldman, who is left with their daughter, Dorothea. There are 35
grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and two great grandchildren, one of the
great grandchildren was born this morning to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Goddard.)

services for John Calvin Howard, pioneer resident of the country, were held
this afternoon in the Rockwell Mortuary chapel, the Rev. C. O. Beagle of the
First Baptist church officiating. Six grandsons, Calvin Howard, Orsen Howard,
William Goddard, Ray Goddard, George Striley and Robert Healless, bore the
casket to its last resting place in Rose Hill cemetery, Camache. Mr. and Mrs.
Walter Goodwin of Waterloo came for the funeral)

Obituary: 19 Sep 1933 (Source: "Obituary," Nelson A Howard, a life time
resident of Clinton county, died at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon in Jane Lamb
hospital, after a six week illness. The body will repose in the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Augus Broders, 840 Fourteenth avenue, South, until noon
Thursday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Rockwell
Funeral home. Mr. Howard was born Sept 20, 1865 in Camanche, the only son of
John and Julia Howard. He married Dec 9, 1890 to Amy L Goddard who died Feb
10, 1930. To thme were born five children who are left to mourn: Mrs. Jasper
Nelson, Mrs. August Broders, Calvin Howard and Orsen Howard, all of Clinton
and Mrs. Roy Nelson, of Morrison, Ill., also thirteen grandchildren and two
great grandchlidren. There are also his stepmother Mrs. John Howard and seven
sisters, Mrs. Harry Doddard, Mrs. S.D. Runyon, Mrs George Healless, Mrs. A.E.
Meinert, Mrs. Edward Cawley, Mrs. A Jeffers and Miss Dorothea Howard. His aged
father died in March of this year.)
