James Lawrence Chapman Family Outline

Generation No. 1

1. JAMES LAWRENCE1 CHAPMAN was born March 15, 1816 in New Market, Shenandoah, Virginia, and died May 22, 1879 in Smith Cemetery (aka Virginia Settlement Cemetery, Orange Township) Lost Nation, Iowa. He married MALINDA ANN CARSON February 14, 1838 in Virginia, daughter of THOMAS CARSON and CATHERINE KINDELL.

Notes for JAMES LAWRENCE CHAPMAN: James and Malinda moved from Virginia to a farm southeast of Grand Mound, and 15 miles southwest of DeWitt, Iowa, in the Spring of 1859.

James Chapman was listed in the Rockingham County, Virginia 1850 census, but by 1860 they had moved to Iowa as they were listed in the Clinton County census. A Post Office was established in what was called the "Virginia Settlement" and was called Orange. The Chapmans built a ferry bridge across the river and it was a crossing for many wagons bound for the western settlements. It was torn down in 1973. James is buried in the Smith cemetery; also know as "The Virginia Settlement Cemetery." He was 63 years old when he died. The issue in the newspaper (Observer) had this write up of James when he died: "James L. Chapman, living in Orange Township; who for some months past has been almost entirely helpless from paralysis of the lower portion of the body, died May 22, age about 64 years."

Notes for MALINDA ANN CARSON:  Malinda's death certificate listed her cause of death as "Mitral disease of the heart, with hypostatic pneumonia." She married James when she was 16 years old, and they were married for 41 years when he died. She is buried beside him the the Smith Cemetery (also known as the Virginia Settlement Cemetery) in Orange Township, Iowa. It is said she lost her mind before she died at age 88.

Not sure of the spelling of Malinda's mother's last name: Kindell or Kindall.

From: Nancy Buckley

I have been working on this side of my family tree for about a year now
(part time as I work full time and show my dogs). I don't feel as though I
have even put a dent in what I'm trying to do. I must admit, this is a
project I absolutely love doing, just wish I had more time. Hopefully by
submitting what I have found so far, someone else maybe able to help me in
my ongoing research.

There are many photos scanned into the program, I just hope you are able to
use some of them. If you require me to scan them separately from the Family
Tree Maker Program, I will gladly send them. Included are: Mary Chapman,
John M. Cook, James L. Cook, Annetta A. Cook, Arminda Francis Cook, and
Clella Mae Cook (my grandmother) among others. I have a very old photo
album with many, many photos with no identification of the people (I'm
positive they are relatives), and most were taken in the Smith Studio (De
Witt, Iowa) and Temple Studio (Clinton, Iowa).

There are also many interesting stories in the "Notes" section.

Please let me know if I can help with anything else and again, thank you for
including our family.

Regards,

Nancy Buckley
