John Schmolfeldt, one of the prominent farmers of Clayton County, was a son of John and Louisa Schmolfeldt, nee Nicmann natives of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, where they died. John was born in that country on March 14, 1815. He came to Clayton County in 1852, and located on his present farm in this township. It consists of 190 acres, on sections 16 and 17. His land is well improved, and his residence one of the finest in the county. He was married in 1852 to Mary, daughter of Joachim and Anna (Kohn) Wendt, natives of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. By this union there were five children, one living - John, born April 10, 1860; Henry, Minna, Doris and William are deceased. They all died in six weekís time. Mr. and Mrs. Schmoldeldt are members of the Lutheran church. He votes the Democratic ticket. source: History of Clayton
