a company of eighty-six men. This company was turned over to Mr. Louthan, and with the 102 men, he marched to St. Joseph, Missouri.
At the time of the great excitement about homestead land in Audubon County in 1871, he with his family removed to that county, where he became the proprietor of the Pioneer Harness Emporium.
Henry Hervey Louthan was born July 16, 1849 in Hancock County, Tenn., and died December 27, 1934 near Grand River, Iowa, son of James H. and Mary (Hatfield) Louthan. He was married in 1878 to Rachel Ernestine Smith, born September 22, 1859, died April 19, 1936 near Grand River, daughter of William and Mary (McConnell) Smith. They became the parents of five children: Herve; William; Mary Esther m. Charlie L. Davis; George; and Martha m. Jessie C. Dinnel.
Charlie L. Davis was born September 18, 1875 and died November 30, 1954, son of Joseph Henry and Sarah Jane (Reynolds) Davis, settling in the old Tennessee area near Doyle Township. He married in 1903 to Mary Esther Louthan, born August 22, 1884, died April 30, 1971, the daughter of Henry Hervey and Rachel Ernestine (Smith) Louthan. They had eleven children: 1.-Vera Ferne m. (1) Miller, (2) Baker. 2.-Clifford m. Merle Loretta Hatfield; Eva Pearle m. (1) Smith, (2) Carl Hattberg; 3.-Atha Ernestine m. Lawrence Campbell 4.-Geretta Rose m. Harold Kirkpatrick; 5.-Rex Arthur m. Hazel Munyon; 6.-Olive May m. McGarvin; 7.-Dale m. Earlene Munyon; 8.-Florence Marie m. (1) Morgan, (2) Wallace; 9.-Grace Pauline m. Elmer Daugherty; 10.-Roy Lavene m. Mildred Barton; 11.-Hazel Louise m. Burton Peterson.
Jonathan Ohio Jones b. Oct. 14, 1878 Doyle Twsp., son of Thomas B. and Eliza J. (Ladd) Jones m. Apr. 12, 1903 to Ava Boles, b. 1884, daughter of William and Emma (Emley) Boles. Jont, as he was called, was a very succesful farmer, farming most of his life in Doyle Twsp. He operated and managed the Rees Jones land and the undivided part of the Thomas B. Jones land and estate until his retirement. They had two daughters: Ruby (1905-1969 m. May 14, 1943 to Lowell Jackson; and Norma (1909-1971) m. Roy Mendenhall. After his wife's death in 1936, m. Ferry Simmerman.
Iry Rees Jones b. May 24, 1885 Doyle Twsp., d. Dec. 13, 1964 at Bakersfield, Calif., son of Thomas B. and Eliza J. (Ladd) Jones, m. May Saffell, July 24, 1907. Born Oct. 12, 1886, d. Jan. 30, 1945, she was the daughter of Marvin and Rachel (Keller) Saffell. He farmed in earlier years in Doyle Twsp. then left Iowa for Bakersfield, Calif., where he became Pres. of the Gundlack Plumbing and Sheet Metal Co. They had four children: Leron b. 1909 m. Marguerite Burgess; Laviece b. 1909 (twin to Leron) m. Frederick Patterson; Cecil Thomas b. 1911 m. Marian Alicia Copeland; and Maxine b. 1921 d. 1942, m. Loren Voth.

William M. Jones was born September 19, 1889, and died July 1, 1976 in Osceola, Iowa, son of Umphrey and Elizabeth (Parry) Jones, natives of Montgomeryshire, North Wales. Born in a log cabin in Doyle Township, he attended country school and the United Brethern Church at Gregg Chapel. He was married on March 15, 1915 at Leon, Iowa, to Golda Gladys Carrel, born March 11, 1895 in Richland Township, Decatur County, Iowa, and died of tuberculosis September 19, 1933, daughter of James and Laura Alice (Clark) Carrel. Raised on the family homestead, she attended school in the Denham School House. They had five children: 1.-Harry Eugene b. 1916 m. Lilith Wald one week before leaving for overseas as machine gunner on a B-17 flying fortress in WWII. He was killed in action over the North Sea, July 17, 1943. 2.-Dale Carl b. 1918 m. Dorothy Sarah Hunt. He served in WW II as a pilot in the U.S. Air Corps, 4 ch: (Cindy, Gary, Maria, Bob) 3.- Iris Louise b. 1921 m. E. .B. Jimerson, a former school teacher at Westerville and Hopeville, 6 ch: (Richard, Bob, Barbara, twins: Daniel and Dave, Pam) 4.-Alice Elizabeth (Bette) b. 1924 m. Alfred Ogbourne, 4 ch: (Patrick, Bill, Michael, Mary Kay) 5.-James William b. 1927 m. Marie James, 4 ch: (Frank, Faye, Mitch, Jean), Jim served in the U.S. Marines in Korean War. |
