Virgil O. and Nancy Jane Smith -- 1915

Virgil Otis Smith, son of Elias James and Jane Ellen (Rhea) Smith was born December 26, 1865 Decatur County, Iowa and died December 12, 1951, Clarke County, Iowa. Trained by his father, he worked at blacksmithing while growing up. He married Nancy Jane German in 1886. Daughter of Nickolas and Rebecca (Garrison) German, she was born September 27, 1869, and died July 11, 1948. Both Virgil and Nancy Jane are buried in Hopeville Cemetery. They had six children: 1.-Charles Err Smith b. June 5, 1887, d. Feb. 23, 1968 (sketch elsewhere). 2.-Orb Smith b. Apr. 10, 1889, d. Feb. 24, 1945, m. Genevieve Dunfee Nov. 18, 1914. 3.-Cleo Smith b. Jan. 25, 1892, d. Apr. 17, 1976 m. Sylvia Mae Booth Dec. 23, 1914. They had 3 ch: (Delores Maxine b. Nov. 28, 1916 m. Vern Hesseltine Feb. 8, 1944, one stillborn child born to this union; Bessie Helen died in infancy 1921; Mildred Mae b. June 17, 1917 m. Marvin Dunfee Oct. 24, 1933, 2 ch: Patricia Lou b. Oct. 4, 1934; Anita Larie b. Feb. 5, 1943). 4.-Axle Grace Smith b. Mar. 8, 1894, d. May 6, 1919 m. Ira E. Watson Aug. 20, 1913, 2 ch: (Ruby Irene d. infancy; Etola m. Verlin Woodard). 5.-Fred R. Smith b. Oct. 12, 1897, d. Mar. 29, 1934 m. Oct. 6, 1928 to Twyla O'Neall, daughter of Peter J. and Cora Lorraine (McCarty) O'Neall, 1 ch: (Carol Lee). 6,-Virgil Smith b. Jan. 24, 1900, d. Jan 18, 1917.
