History of St. Bernards

Catholic Church

The Catholic church was organized in Clarke County around the year 1885 with the Rev. Father Sheridan of Chariton saying the first mass in the Osceola mission during that year. There was no regular place of worhsip for the mission until 1890 when the frame church on East Pearl street was erected at a cost of $1,400. There were about 150 parishioners at that time.

Among the early members were Daniel Casey, Patrick Cavanaugh, Patrick Clifford, Michael Hogan, John Loux, S. Shockling, M. Flynn, and others. Services were held each fourth Sunday by Father Sheridan.
