OSCEOLA. The seat of justice for Clarke county, is a thriving incorporated town of 2,000 inhabitants, on the main line of C., B & Q. R.R., 150 miles west of Burlington, 138 east of the Missouri river, and by rail 80 from Des Moines. It is surrounded by a good farming country, the principal crops being corn, grasses, and producing also some barley, rye, and flax seed; these, together with hogs, cattle, butter and eggs, forming the shipments from this point. The business interests of the place incude 3 flour mills, a creamery, a grain elevator, 3 banks, and 2 weekly newspapers, the "Democrat" and the "Sentinel." There are 5 churches, Baptist, Christian, Methodist Episcopal, Methodist and Presbyterian and 2 good graded public schools. Improved lands in the vicinity are worth $15 to $25 per acre, and unimporved $8 to $12. Tri-weekly stages to Leon and to Indianola, and semi-weekly to Winterset. Exp., Am. Tel., W.U. Mail, daily.
