John H. Lawson
Born 28 Nov 1841 Bartholomew Co. IN - Died 3 Mar 1922 Bloomfield, Davis Co.
He enlisted 24 Aug 1861 as a Pvt. in Co. D, 3rd Regiment, Iowa Cavalry Volunteers. Discharged for reenlistment 26 Mar 1864. Reenlisted 28 Mar 1864 in Co. D, 3rd Iowa Cavalry Vols. On 1 July, or thereabouts of the same year, he was promoted to 1st Lt. of said company. On 26 Jan 1866 he was discharged in Atlanta. He never married. According to family lore, the doctor and his landlady pooled their funds to provide him a coffin and burial plot. He is buried in Johnson Cemetery, Fabius Twp., Davis Co.
John’s parents were Hudson Lawson and Rachel RUSSELL. According to the 1850 Federal Census for Davis Co., IA, Hudson was born in 1809 in VA. The date and place of his death are unknown. Rachel Russell was born 16 Oct. 1811 in Lee Co., VA. Her family moved to Bartholomew Co., IN ca 1817. She and Hudson were married there on 25 Dec 1833.
They had six children: 1. William Jasper 3 March 1836 – 12 Feb 1915 + Sarah Rachel YATES 3 Jan 1840 in Putnam Co., IN – 14 June 1919 Both died in Blair Twp, Garfield Co., OK. They had six children
2. Francis Green Ca 1839 - ? Francis and Husdson disappear following Hudson & Rachel’s divorce in Nov. 1858.

4. James Stokely 6 Jan 1845 – 16 Mar 1919 + Martha Jane HENDERSON 6 Oct 18948 Van Buren (Now Cass Co). MO– 2 April 1919 They had six children, one of whom was my grandfather.
5. Mary Emily 1 Nov 1847 – 14 Aug 1934 in Kansas City, MO. + Josiah Johnston HENDERSON 6 April 1839 in Putnam Co., IN – 15 Jan 1914 in Muskogee, OK They had five children.
6. Melinda C. “Milly”, “Lindy” Jan 1852 – 1919/20 + Major Thomas Daniel 3 Mar 1850 – 11 June 1935 (Davis Co.?) They had two children.
All children with the exception of Melinda were born in Bartholomew Co, IN, probably near present day Richmond. Melinda was born in Davis Co., IA, probably near Monterey. All deaths occurred in Davis Co unless otherwise noted.
Wilfford Drummond Tharp Born 23 Dec 1832 Lewis Co., VA (now WV) – Died 25 Mar 1910 Mt. Pleasant Henry Co, IA
Initially he hired another man to take his place for one year. Later he received word that the Confederates had kidnapped a brother. They attempted, without success to gain his freedom. Another brother was also captured by the Confederates and taken to the POW Camp at Andersonville, GA. Following that Wilford and another brother enlisted.* He was a Private, Co. H, 15th IA Infantry. Enlisted 5 Oct 11864 at Davenport, IA, Discharged 24 July 1865, Louisville, KY

They had seven children. The youngest, Timothy, was my 2G Grandfather.

2. Lovina b 29 Jam 1826 VA - Died?, Ritchie Co., WV + Felix COLLINS No dates, died in Ritchie Co. They had ten children.
3. Hezekiah B. Born 1827 VA – Died ? + Elizabeth WASS Born in VA, Died in Ritchie Co., WV They had five children.

+ Sarah E. STANDLEY Born 24 Nov 1839 in Putnam Co. /, IN – Died 14 Dec 1920 in Moulton, Appanoose Co. They had seven children, one of whom was my grandmother. Both are buried in Sunset View Cemetery, Moulton, Appanoose Co.

* This is taken from my dad’s memoirs. I think he referred to Sampson Sedgwick. A search of the National Park Service Civil War database reveals no other Tharps from Iowa that match the information I have.
** Sampson Sedgwick did serve in the Union Army, but enlisted in VA, or if you prefer, present day West Virginia. |
