Richard Martin was born in Ireland, married in Illinois, and enlisted while living in Illinois, leaving a wife and two children to stay with her parents.  After he was discharged he moved to Farragut, Iowa which is in Fremont County.

A family member transcribed Richard Martin's diary which he carried through the civil war.  He served one year and was injured at Champion's Hill.  Through Ancestry.com I followed the dates of his enlistment through the dates of his discharge and matched them with his diary and the timelines of the 124th Infantry Regiment .  His diary pretty much matched up with the battles / skirmishes the 124th fought.  Richard was injured at Champion's Hill and his diary describes the hospital on site,
amputations, etc.
