William W Raner

Raner, William W. (Veteran.) Age 21. Residence White Side County, Illinois, nativity Virginia.  Enlisted Jan. 22, 1862. Mustered Feb. 5, 1862. Re-enlisted and re-mustered March 11, 1864.  Missing in action and taken prisoner July 22, 1864, Atlanta, Ga. Mustered out June 30, 1865, Clinton, Iowa.

The following information submitted by Marji Turner

William was born to John G and Rachel C (Huffman) Raner in 1842 in Braxton County, WV.  He was married to Phoebe S Eye on August 20, 1867 in Whiteside County, IL.  Phoebe was born on May 15, 1849.  They had three children:   

Ernest B Raynor, born in 1868 in Kansas and was a teamster for the US Army at Fort Worden

Oscar Raner, born in 1871 in Illinois and was in the Military

Nathan W Raner, born January 13, 1875 in Illinois and died October 31, 1953 at Vancouver, Clark County, WA. He is buried at the Fort Worder Post Cemetery, section 3, site 36, Tacoma, Pierce County, WA.


William W Raner died on June 6, 1876 in Newton, Whiteside County, IL.  He is buried in Smack Cemetery [Zion Methodist], section 23, Newton, Whiteside County, IL.  The old abandoned cemetery is located in the woods, on farm property.  To view other cemetery photo's, click on the links below.  (photo's taken by Larry Jordan, Galesburg, IL):
