Borre Peterson was one of the first settlers in section 2, on the east limits of the site of Canby.  He came in 1873, in time to assist with the organization of Norman Township and serve on the first board of supervisors.  He was born in Norway Nov 26 1839 and immigrated before the civil war.  In 1861 he enlisted from Iowa in the 12th regiment of volunteer Infantry and served under General Grant at the battles of Fort Henry, Fort Donaldson, and Shiloh.  He was taken prisoner at Shiloh and held at Macon Georgia for over 6 months.  He was released and returned to the army and served a new enlistment through the close of the war.  He came to Canby by Spring Grove, Minnesota with his wife and two children.  Peterson became a Canby businessman, owning a feed store and serving as a policeman.  1900 lived in Canby, was a member of the C Summers GAR Post #94 in Canby, Minnesota.  Died 1920 buried in Naples S DAK.
