15 March 1971, page 13 Alvin J. Natvig, 76, 125 Hinckley St., died at his home Saturday afternoon. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, with the Rev.Hugo J. Handberg offiviating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Natvig was born 19 October 1894 in Saude, Iowa. He had been a resident of Mankato since 1928. On July 14, 1938, he married Valborg A. Gullixson in Chicago. He had been an instructor at Bethany Lutheran College, teaching Latin, mathematics and Hebrew. He also coached basketball and baseball at the college. He was the first coach at Luther College, where he had graduated in 1918. He had also taught at the Park Region College in Fergus Falls before coming to Mankato. Survivors included his wife, Valborg, two daughters; Mrs. Neil (Marilyn) Thomas of Lafayete, Ind., and Mrs. M. Jarvin (Anne) Emerson of Manhattan, Kan.; two sons, Harold O. of Mankato and George L. who is serving in the Navy in Key West, Fla.; a sister, Miss Gertrude Natvig of Mankato; and eight grandchildren. (1860 - 1935) Andrew Natvig, age 75, dead. Funeral this afternoon, Saude. Born near Bergen, Norway, March 31, 1860. Lived on at a farm near Saude 41 Years. Leaves wife and daughters. The death of Andrew Natvig, age 75 years, at his home near Saude on Monday afternoon, .April 15, 1935 at 3 o'clock, came as a shock to his wife and children, other relatives and many friends. He had not been well for some time, caused by the enlargement of the heart. However, he continued active, and attended a meeting of the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of New Hampton on Tuesday night, April 9th, he having been a director of this bank since a 1926. On Saturday he journeyed to Cresco for consultation about his health. His family had been told of his condition and he seemed to realize his weakness, yet he was never confined to his bed. Andrew Natvig has been a wonderful man, always honest and upright and worthy. He was a good son and brother and a lovable and true husband and father. He was born near Bergen, Norway. At the age his seven years he immigrated to America with his parents and four younger brothers. He was educated in the rural schools, at Breckenridge Institute of Decorah and Upper Iowa University of Fayette. For nine years he taught school, after which he engaged in farming for the balance of his life. He resided for 41 years on the same farm, one mile west of Saude. On May 22,. 1889, he was married at Saude to Miss Inger Dybevlk. To this union two sons and three daughters were born. Both sons, Alert Natvig amd Peter Natvig have preceded him in death. He is survived by his faithful wife and life companion, and three daughters - Mrs. H. J. Gilbert and Mrs. L. I. Gilbert of Howard County and Miss Pearl Natvig at home. Besides these, he leaves six grandchildren, six brothers and four sisters. The brothers and sisters are Herman or Mankato, Minnesota, Ole of Cresco, lver and Carl of Saude, George of Cresco and Day of Saude, Mrs. George Miller of Elma, Mrs. T. O. Vaala and Mrs. Andrew Vaala of Lawler. and Mrs. AIf Vaala of New Hampton. The deceased was a faithful and good member of the Lutheran Synod church of Saude, from which his funeral will be held this Thursday afternoon at 1: 30 o'clock. Services will be by the pastor. Rev, H. M. Tjernagel. Burial will be in the adjoining Synod Lutheran cemetery. His pallbearers will he his six brothers, Herman, Ole, Iver, Carl, George and Day Natvig. To his wife and children and other relatives we extend sympathy. Nobody is ever quite ready to have a loved one fall into the last long sleep. But it's the will of the Master. Few men, indeed, have lived so well and so completely as has Andrew Natvig. Active in business and church and in life, retaining his tine mental faculties to the last moment. 1871 - 1941 Died Suddenly Wednesday Afternoon Of Heart Disease At The Age Of 70 Years CRANE CREEK - Ellen Nelson died suddenly at her home at Jerico; Wednesday afternoon, January 7 about 2:30 o'clock. Mrs. Nelson had visited her brother-in-law Halvor Nelson and wife earlier in the afternoon. She had walked home and a short time later her nephew, Louis Haugen found her dead in a chair. Her death was caused by heart disease. She had reached the age of 79 years, 6 months and 14 days. EIIen Flatjord; daughter of Ole and Thorbjor Flatjord was born in Jacksonville Township, near Jerico June 24, 1871. In infancy she was baptized into the Lutheran faith. later she was confirmed in the same faith. On May 6, 1898 she was united in marriage to Martin Nelson also of Jerlco. Mr. Nelson died January 1, 1935. All her lifetime, Mrs. Nelson was an active member or the Crane Creek church, she was never to busy to attend services or to assist with duties that belonged to her church. Mrs. Nelson was a charter member of the Ladies aid Society and was present at the last meeting. During these many years she did her duties willingly and faithfully. She was a good neighbor. She attended rural school in this county. Mrs. Nelson had a cheerful disposition. She loved her home at Jerico and enjoyed doing her household tasks. Mrs. Nelson often visited the sick and did many kind deeds to alleviate their sufferings. Funeral services were held at her homo at Jerico, Saturday afternoon, January 10 at 1 o'clock with Reverend T. O. Torgerson, her pastor, officiating. The choir sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "Through The Night of Doubt and Sorrow." At I: 30 the funeral services were continued at the Crane Creek church. Mrs. T. O. Torgerson sang a Norwegian hymn during the service. The choir sang "When ...... Like a River." Mrs. Walter Dreckman was accompanist. The pall bearers were: Erick Nystel, Alma; Iver Nystol, New Hampton; Hans Braham, New Hampton; Andrew Throndson, New Hampton; Orval Landswerk, New Hampton; Knut Kjarvik, Lawler. Mrs. Iver Njos and Mrs. S. G. Sanderson had charge of the flowers. There were many memorial gifts to the Lutheran church in her memory. Mrs. Nelson was laid to rest beside her husband in the Crane Creek cemetery. A brother, Ole Haugen, and a sister, Mrs. James Johnson have preceded her in death. Mrs. Nelson is survived by a brother, Halvor Flatjord. New Hampton, and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends from a distance attending the funeral were: Mildred Johnson, Evanston, Illinois; Bertha Sperley, Mrs. Martha Qualen, Staples, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Johnson, Adams, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Martin Potratz, Mrs. Albert Protratz, all of Sumner. 8 March 1906 James Nolan, Near Belle Plaine, Smothered by Hay James Nolan, a prominent farmer living near Belle Plaine, while hauling hay, met with a fatal accident. In some manner the load was overturned and Nolan was buried beneath the hay, where he smothered to death. He was found twelve hours after the accident. Hans G. Northness, 71, New Hampton farmer, died at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, at the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Tom L. Johnson of rural New Hampton. He had been seriously ill for about a week and had been staying with the Johnson's for that time. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 9. at 2 p.m. at the Crane Creek Lutheran Church. A family prayer service will be held about 1:20 p.m. at the Perry Funeral Home chapel. Rev. John AM. Rode, pastor of the New Hampton Trinity Lutheran Church, will I officiate. Kenneth Lester of New Hampton will sing "Abide With Me" and "My Faith Looks Up To Thee." Organist will be Ole Sanderson of Lawler. Internment will he in the parish cemetery with nephew as pallbearers. Perry Funeral Service has charge of the arrangement, where friends may call Thursday (today) after 2 p. m. Hans G. Northness, son of James and Gusta Ethuen Northness was born November 18, 1891, in Chickasaw County. He obtained his education in the rural schools. He was engaged in farming on the same farm, nine miles north of New Hampton, where he was born and raised. He lived there with his sister, Annie Northness. Mr. Northness never married. He was a member of the Crane Creek Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Tom L. Johnson, Annie Northness and Mrs. Emil (Alma) Wollwage of New Hampton and Mrs. Joseph (Carrie) Johnson of Elma. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Theodore, John and Andrew, and two sisters, Mrs. Otto (Janie) Dahlen, and Mrs. Nick (Rosie) Dahlen. Contributed by Jim Johnson, October 2007 |

Nystel, age 73 of New Hampton, IA died on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at New Hampton Nursing and Rehab Center. ![]() Raymond Bernard Nystel was born on May 9, 1935 to Iver and Martha (Kjarvik) Nystel on the family farm in Jacksonville Township, Chickasaw County. He attended Jacksonville Township District Ten School. Ray took over his family farm where he farmed until 1985. Ray then worked for other farmers in the area. He moved to New Hampton in 1994 where he worked as a janitor for the Heritage Residence until his health wouldn’t allow him. He then worked for the New Hampton Library and the Carnegie Cultural Center. Ray enjoyed farming, working outside, carpentry, sharing his Norwegian heritage and especially spending time with his children, grandchildren and his dog Spunky. Raymond was a member of Crane Creek Immanuel Lutheran Church. Raymond is survived by his children Raelene (John) Maas of New Hampton, IA, Julie (T.J.) Schendel of Des Moines, IA and Rick (Anna) Nystel of Waterloo, IA; grandchildren Logan and Cameron Maas, Tate Schendel, Meghan, Myah and Tyler Nystel; sister-in-law Rose Nystel of New Hampton, IA; brother-in-law Lawrence Stansbery of Waterloo, IA; several beloved nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters Mae Njus, Aleda Lee, Hazel Lee, Evelyn Stansbery and Mavis Olson; brothers Edward, Kenneth, Ivan and Arthur. Burial will be in Crane Creek Cemetery, Lawler, IA with Ron Olson, Jerry Olson, Charlie Lee, Jim Lee, Irvin Nystel and Larry Stansbery serving as casket bearers.
