New Hampton Tribune, Vol. LV, No. 4

JIM JOHNSON DIED FROM HEART ATTACK
Splendid Man, Always Active, Is Called In His Sixty-ninth Year

James Johnson, the brick and stone mason, died at his home in New Hampton, Thursday morning, January 23, 1931. Death was due to enlargement of the heart (myocarditis). He had been sick but a week.

The deceased was born in Dane County, Wisconsin, July 1, 1862. He was married on January 6, 1886, to Miss Nellie Olson.

To this union five children were born, two of whom died in infancy, and three of whom with their mother, remain to mourn his death. The living children are John of Sacramento, California, Mildred at home, but a student in Columbia University, New York City, and Harold of Columbus, Ohio. He also leaves one grandson, one sister, Mrs. Nels Johnson of Adams, Minnesota, and one brother, John Johnson of Minot, North Dakota.

His funeral services were held on Monday afternoon from the Crane Creek Lutheran Church, and burial was in that parish cemetery. Services were conducted by the pastor, Reverend H. O. Finstad.

Jim Johnson was a fine old man and many are sorry that he has been called from earth. He was a man of good habits, moral character, sturdy constitution and he continued to be active in his accustomed pursuits, that of stone mason, brick laying, plastering and cementing, after the usual age men ordinarily drop out of the ranks of the workers.

We mourn with his family and to his wife and children and other relatives we extend sincere sympathy.

JOHN WASHINGTON JOHNSON
New Hampton Tribune
29 Apr 1900

John W. Johnson was born in Onondaga county, New York, Nov. 25, 1820 and died at his home near Bassett, April 8, 1900.
At the age of 12 years the deceased, in company with his parents, moved to Saline, Mich. In 1849 he came to Fayette county, Iowa.
On Nov. 25, 1850, at the age of 30 years in the town of Elgin, Fayette county, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Miss Lydia Rowley of the same place.
In the winter of 1851 he moved to Bradford, Chickasaw county, Iowa and on the 10th day of December, 1851 moved on to the farm on which he died.
The deceased raised a large family of children. Seven besides his wife survive him. One, Effie, died in childhood. Of these, two reside in Charles City, Mrs. William Blunt and J.L. Johnson; Mrs. A.E. Gault resides in Bassett. Mrs. H. Thomas in Ionia; Mrs Augustine in Linn county, Iowa and George and Ey at the parental home.
The funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church at Bassett by Rev. Dorcas on Tuesday, April 10, and the body was interred in the cemetery at Chickasaw.
He can justly be classed as one of the pioneers of Chickasaw county, no settlements then within its borders excepting the old town of Bradford, in which there was one store, an Indian trading post and two or three log houses. The county was not then organized and almost every foot of land lying to the northwest was unsettled, Nashua, Lawler, New Hampton and the towns in the county were not thought of. All travel was by team or on foot across the prairies. No railways at that time running as far west even as Chicago. Everything consumed had to be hauled from near the Mississippi river across almost unfordable streams and over the boundless sea of prairie. His life was but a link between the past and the present, a bridge between the old and the new. His was a mind bold and independent, ever ready to condemn wrong and to advocate what he considered to be right. Another old pioneer gone, taken his place with (she) the silent majority.

Remains Were Buried at Crane Creek

Mrs. Nellie Johnson, age 70 years, 5 months and 3 days, died at her home on East Main Sunday afternoon, July 5, at 3:35, following an illness of five months. A short time ago she submitted to a very serious operation for a tumor of the stomach, hoping that it would improve her health, but she grew steadily worse. Everything possible was done for her but her sickness did not respond to treatment.

Nellie Olson was born in Norway, February 2, 1865. When a very small child she came to this country with her parents. Shortly after their arrival her parents both died leaving her an orphan at an early age. She was reared in the home of an uncle, Ole Flatjord, of Crane Creek. Her early education was received in the schools of this county.

On January 6, 1886, she became the bride of James Johnson of New Hampton, who died January 22, 1931. Five children were born to them; one son and one daughter preceded their mother in death. Those who survive are John of Oakland, California, Harold of Columbus, Ohio, and Mildred at home. Besides her children she is survived by one grandson, James, of Columbus, Ohio.

Following her marriage the family lived on a farm near New Hampton, later moving to this city. Mrs. JOHNSON was a member of the Crane Creek Lutheran church. She was a faithful worker in the Women's Relief corps of this city. She was a devoted wife and mother, a kind neighbor and a true friend. By these qualities she had endeared herself to all whose lives she touched.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 7, at 1 o'clock, at the home and 2:00 o'clock at the Crane Creek Lutheran church. Rev. H.M. Finstad conducted the services. Members of the Martha Mission furnished music for the service at the home. Burial was made in the Crane Creek cemetery.

Those from out of town who attend the funeral were Mrs. Nels Johnson, Mrs. Nordine Torgerson, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Johnson, all of Adams, Minnesota.

IN MEMORY OF MRS. JAMES JOHNSON

We extend our deepest sympathy to all who mourn the death on Mrs. Johnson. In the passing of Mrs. James Johnson we feel the loss of an estimable woman, neighbor and friend whose kind words and deeds endeared her to all with whom she met. Her cheerful conversation was always an uplift to Mrs. Mills. Mrs. Johnson was at all times just her self "Nellie", a person of rare integrity. For more than a half century we have heartily enjoyed "Nellie" as best of friends. Mills family.

Again the Master beckoned and one of our faithful sisters heard the call and gently her spirit winged its way to Him who gave it. She was faithful to every trust and down through the years her untiring labor in behalf of the Relief corps will stand as a monument to her memory. The tender sympathy of this Women's Relief corps, A.P. Morton post, No 69, is extended to her sons and daughter. Not dead, but only promoted. She has entered the Order above, And there 'neath the smiles of the Master, She will finish her labors of love. The next regular meeting of the corps will be Tuesday, July 14th. --Mable Thorson, Press Cor.
