19 IN LITTER - A Yorkshire sow on the Erast Knobloch farm near Lester recently gave birth to 19 pigs. All but one were surviving late that same day.

200 LBS. PENNIES - Steve Skarin of Spencer recently cashed in 32,450 pennies after nearly four years of coin collecting while he attended college. Skarin used a lined gunny sack and a carriage dolly to move the pennies weighing more than 200 pounds.

A group of relatives was entertained in the Charles Carey home Thursday evening, observing the seventh birthday of their daughter, Linda. Following a social time refreshments were served.

BALDWINS WERE HERE - Two former Nashua couples, the Vernie Baldwins of Independence, Wi and the Merle Baldwins now of Austin, Mn., were among visitors to the Big 4 Fair. Vernie is farming near Independence. Keith is retired, but works part-time at a filling station near his home in the vicinity of the 218-90 intersection.

BEAVER CREEK DRY - Speaking of dry conditions, Glenn Young, who farms north of Bassett said Beaver creek, which runs through his place went dry Saturday night, the second time in 36 years for such an event to happen. Beaver creek is spring fed, Glenn explained, and it takes a dry year, indeed, to affect it.

BIG TOMATO- Ernest Madison of Lakeside recently harvested a tomato grown in his garden that weighted more than two pounds and was five and a half inches across.

Brenda Hirsch, who underwent surgery recently at the Shriners' Hospital for Crippled Children, Burns Institute, Cincinnati, Oh., arrived back in Waterloo by air Thursday afternoon, where her father, Roger, met her. The surgery this time was for grafting an ear to replace an ear supposedly burned away but there was a happy surprise. The ear was still there, hidden under scar tissue, and now Brenda has two good ears, as the other was not burned. She goes back October 1 for a checkup.

CANNED CUCUMBERS - Mrs. Richard Malin of Tama has found a new way of canning cucumbers. She found a can in her cucumber patch in which two cucumbers grew, thus canned cucumbers!

Cards of Thanks - Thanks to all who visited me at the hospital, sent cards, flowers or gifts, to those who helped with the hay, brought food, or any other help. A special thanks to the Albert Klunders for all they did for us and to Pastor Don for his call at the hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Jake Jacobs.

Carla Peters and Patrick McCarthy Took Marital Vows - Carla Jean Peters, daughter of Mr. Mrs. John Peters of Charles City and Patrick Joseph McCarthy of Ames, son of Mr. Mrs. Wm. Wilder of Nashua and Patrick McCarthy, Sr., of Fredericksburg, Va., exchanged marriage vows at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 28, at Bethany Alliance church in Charles City. Pastor Maurice McClun officiated the formal double ring ceremony. The bride is a graduate of Charles City high school and attended one semester at NIACC. She was employed by Carmen's Hallmark coph of Mason City. The groom is a graduate of Nashua high school, and is a Junior at Iowa State University. After a wedding trip to Kansas City, the couple will be at home in Ames.

CLINTON FRIEDLYS MOVE TO CHEYENNE - Mr. Mrs. Clinton Friedly moved in mid-August to Cheyenne, Wy., where he is working with the Ericson Hardware store. The offer was made while the Friedlys were visiting the Melvin Decklevers earlier in the year, when the Friedlys attended the graduation of James and Kelly Decklever. The Friedlys have listed their home for sale and are living at 1215 Monroe Avenue in Cheyenne. Mrs. Friedly and Pat Decklever and son Curt returned to Nashua last week to pick up remaining furniture and had a three-day visit with their relatives here.

Connie Schluter to Be Bride in Cresco November 6 - Mr. Mrs. Albert A. Schluter of Cresco announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Connie Rae to Steven L. Matt son of Mr. Mrs. LeRoy (Bud) Matt. The bride-elect is employed as a secretary receptionist for Dr. Robert Nelson and her fiancé is the manager of Matt's Lawn and Garden. A November 6 wedding is planned at Immanuel Lutheran church in Cresco.

Dennis Zwanziger, 15, son of the Virgil Zwanzigers, has "retired" from his job as carrier for the Des Moines paper, due to an injury. Dennis recently fell down the basement steps at his home, and suffered a dislocated hip, with surgery following at Mason City. He is now up and around on crutches. The new carrier is a neighbor, David Johnson.

DIETZ UNOPPOSED - There is no formal contest for the lone seat on the Board. Burton Dietz, incumbent, was the only one who filed.

Gordon Lockey left Sunday morning by plane from the Waterloo airport for Long Beach, Ca., after several weeks visit with his parents, Mr. Mrs. Clifford Lockey and other relatives.

Henry Beothold has been off the job at White Equipment after accidentally striking his right hand with a hammer while at work, fracturing a finger.

Jennifer Mehmen, four year old daughter of Steve Mehmen and Cindy Strawser Meyer, has been in a coma at St. Mary's hospital at Rochester since Saturday, August 28. She suffered head injuries that afternoon while she was playing on a tractor in the yard of the farm in Riverton, and fell, striking her head. She was taken to a doctor, then to the Charles City hospital, where, after a brain scan, whe was rushed to Rochester. Jennifer is the granddaughter of the Larry Strawsers of Nashua.

Max Weiss, sr., has an appointment in the Mayo Clinic this month for examination of his back.

Mr. Mrs. Clarence Boyd, Mr. Mrs. Clifford Lockey and Mark have returned home from a 15-day trip to Denver, Co., San Diego, and Los Angeles.

Mr. Mrs. Daniel Ettenger and son Joshua left Thursday morning for their hime in New York City after visiting her parents, the Scott Channers.

Mr. Mrs. Don Hubert attended a steak cook out in the Larry Mehmen home in Charles City Friday evening. Others attending were Mr. Mrs. Harold Rodamaker, jr., of rural Charles City, Father Bernard Grady of Charles City, Mr. Mrs. Richard Gabe of rural Rockford and Mr. Mrs. Frank McCoy of rural Orchard. After the steak fry, Rev. Grady showed slides of his trip to Bolivia, S.A.

Mr. Mrs. Mack Whited and granddaughter, Renee Coops of Mason City were guests Sunday afternoon in the Channer home.

Mr. Mrs. Raymond Boggess, Mr. Mrs. John Jones and Jeremy of Bassett, and Mr. Mrs. Bob Wennekamp of Carrville attended the birthday supper Saturday evening in the Joe Jones home in honor of Bill Jones' birthday.

Mrs. Barbara Thomsen and son Andes, left on Thursday morning for their home in Grand Lodge, Mi., after spending two weeks visiting her parents, Mr. Mrs. Scott Channer, and his mother, Julia Thomas, and sister in Charles City.

Mrs. Charles Carey and Mrs. Lewis Carey attended a baby shower honoring Mrs. Scott and son Paul Thomas in the Temple Baptist church in Charles City Saturday evening. Paul Thomas is the son of Rev. and Mrs. Scott.

Mrs. Thomas Petersen of rural Atlantic spent the Labor Day weekend with her parents, Mr. Mrs. Herman Venz.

Reports from the Sick and Injured - Sheriff Galen Folkers was knocked over by a runaway horse during the last Farmers' race at the fair Monday afternoon. He was standing in the infield near the judges' stand when the horse bolted from the track, knocking over both Folkers and one of the chuckwagon judges. The latter was not seriously injured, but Folkers suffered a dislocated shoulder and some chipped teeth. He was taken to the New Hampton hospital for tions, Glenn Young

SARA CHAMNEY AND CHARLES PRIZLER WED AUGUST 14 - Sara Jean Chamney of rural West Liberty and Charles Prizler, also of rural West Liberty, formerly of Davenport and Eldridge, exchanged marriage vows August 14 at Cedar Valley United Methodist church in West Liberty. Parents are Mrs. Eleanor Chamney and the late Donald Chamney of Evansdale, and foster parents are Mr. Mrs. Royal Johnson of West Liberty, Mrs. A. J. Barker of California and Charles Pizler of Oregon are parents of the groom. The Rev. Herbert Foxworthy officiated the ceremony. The bride will be a 1977 graduate of West Liberty high school. She is employed by Rohners Digital Sports Systems. The groom is a graduate of West high in Davenport and has completed one year of Scott Community College. He is employed by Longs Mfg. co. Mrs. C. L. Rockufeler of Ionia and Mrs. Effie Johnson of Charles City are great-grandmothers of Sara Chamney. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. John Rockufeler of Charles City and Hazel Chamney of Nashua.

Sheri Cerwinske, Michael Bayne, Married at Lackland - Mr. Mrs. Robert Cerwinske announce the marriage of their daughter, Sheri L. Cerwinske, to AB Michael Bayne of San Diego, Ca. They were married July 28 at 4:30 p.m. at Chapel 8 at Lackland Air Force Base, Tx., by Chaplain Melvin Pickering. AB Michelle F. Sumner was maid of honor and AB Brian Hinkle was best man. All four were in uniform. Both Sheri and Michael have finished Basic Training at Lackland and are now stationed at McDill Air Force Base, Fl. Both are in the Air Police. Sunday school was held as usual Sunday morning in the Congregational church. There was no church service as the pastor, Rev. Ronald Wamsley, is having two weeks vacation visiting his daughter in Greenville, NC.

Sunday, Mr. Mrs. Donald Hubert and family attended a picnic at Chickasaw honoring Mr. Mrs. Raymond Trask, who were home. Raymond returned Thursday morning for Army service at Corpus Christi, Tx., and Mrs. Trask remained with her parents, Mr. Mrs. Ted Hubert of Colwell.

The Congregational Ladies Aid Society was entertained Tuesday afternoon in the Mrs. Carl Ingram home. There were five guests present. Mrs. Ben Meyer gave the devotions. The October meeting will be a clean up at the church.

TRIPLE BLOOM - Mrs. Clarence Litterer of Charles City found a rare triple bloom in her flower garden recently, a pink Zinnia from a mixed seeding.

YARDSTICK HOBBY - Morris Dimond of rural Keokuk collects yardsticks. He took up the hobby in 1974 because it seemed unusual. So far he has collected about 200 yardsticks, and more keep arriving each month from friends and friends of friends.
