AURELIA. Population, 625. Dating its settlement from 1870, is an incorporated town located on the Illinois Central R. R., in Pitcher township, Cherokee county, 9 miles east of Cherokee, the judicial seat, 69 n. e. of Sioux City. and 146 n. w. of Des Moines. It has Congregational, Dunkard, Evangelical, Lutheran and Methodist churches, city gas plant, water works, 2 banks and a weekly newspaper, the Aurelia Sentinel. Exp., Am. Tel., W. U. CHEROKEE. Population, 4884. An incorporated city on the Little Sioux river and on the Illinois Central R. R., in Cherokee county, of which it is the judicial seat, 150 miles n. w. of Dubuque. It is lighted by electricity, has 8 churches representing as many different denominations; excellent schools, public library, an opera house, 3 banks, water works, railroad repair shops, telephone exchange, 3 newspapers, the Times, the Cherokee Democrat and the Cherokee Republican, etc. The State Hospital for Insane, located here, finished in 1902, is the largest hospital for the insane in the west.
