Recalls The Past

Pearl RUNYAN, now Mrs. Ray FULK, P.M. Park, Clear Lake, taught the Owen Grove No. 3 school in Owen Township for three years. This picture was taken in her first year, 1921-22, when there were 22 pupils.

Each morning school opened with the reading of a certain chapter or verse from the Bible, choisen by the pupils and read by the teacher. This was followed by prayer.

Weather permitting, all went outside for flag raising and pledging allegiance, after which daily lessons were begun.

A hot lunch was served at noon cooked by the older pupils. Dishes were washed and dried by the younger ones.

A 4-H Club was started under the guidance of Roy (Pat) O'DONNELL and the school was standardized.

It now stands on the North Iowa Fairgrounds, placed there through the courtesy of Leigh CURRAN, who attended the school through the eighth grade. His father, John CURRAN, was school director.
