CLEAR LAKE — Commons, kitchen and entrance renovations at Clear Lake High School are expected to begin this summer.
The School Board this week awarded the project to Dean Snyder Construction, whose $2.1 million bid was the lowest of three construction companies that submitted offers.
The project will solve several issues — confusion over where the main entrance is located, a multitude of exterior stairs, an outdated kitchen configuration and a crowded lunchroom, according to Superintendent Anita Micich. Plans from architectural firm Bergland + Cram of Mason City call for adding a covered entry and replacing stairs. A courtyard to the north of the commons will be enclosed to add a secure entry and main office with clear sight lines. School officials say they plan to use the current main office for counseling, health and conference space.
It’s located on the other side of the building. Renovations will also make more space for the kitchen, serving areas and new seating. The reconfigured commons will allow up to 175 students to be served during each of the two lunch periods, instead of three. The project will be funded by sales tax revenue, which is mainly designated for school infrastructure needs.
