MASON CITY - Robert J. Douglas, 83, of 78 Kentucky Court, died Thursday (March 26, 2009) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 30, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Jon M. Seda, the Rev. Kenneth B. Gehling and Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka, con-celebrating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, where full military honors will be conducted by members of Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St N.E., Mason City, where a scriptural wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the Newman Foundation.

Robert James Douglas was born Aug. 4, 1925, at Manly, a son of Jake and Dorothy (Shannon) Douglas. He was united in marriage to Kathryn Makris on Feb. 9, 1952, at Holy Family Catholic Church.

Bob attended school at Manly and Holy Family Catholic School, Mason City. He was a 1943 graduate of Holy Family Catholic High School, Mason City. He served in the Navy and was a 1947 graduate of the University of Virginia, earning a bachelor of arts degree in business.

Following his discharge from the Navy, Bob returned to Mason City and joined his father at Douglas Insurance, where he worked for 40 plus years. He served in the Naval Reserve for 20 years.

Bob was chairman of the Cerro Gordo County Democratic Party, commander of AmVets, president of the Pioneer Historical Society, president of the Cerro Gordo County Tuberculosis and Health Department, was a member of Toastmasters International, served as commander of a Naval Reserve unit, was a member of the Mason City Airport Commission, was treasurer and president of Cerro Gordo Independent Insurance Agents, president of the Mason City Chamber of Commerce, president of the Holy Family Church Parish Council, president of the Newman Catholic School Board, president of the Newman Foundation, and chairman of the North Iowa Band Festival.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Elk's Lodge, Mason City.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathryn Douglas, of Mason City; three daughters, Jean (Dennis) McMenimen of Cedar Rapids, Pat (Rick) Dunkel of Cedar Rapids, and Deb (Dr. Joedy) Istas of Omaha, Neb.; three sons, Bob (Pam) Douglas of Des Moines, Mike (Lynne) Douglas of Fairfax, Va., and Tom (Erin) Douglas of Mason City; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Douglas of Peoria, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Bill and John; and two grandsons, Marc and Benjamin.
