MASON CITY Dr. Jerome F. Biebesheimer, 90, of Mason City passed away December 26, 2006, in Mason City, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. January 2, 2007, at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 Willowbrook Drive S.W., in Mason City.

Jerome was born February 28, 1916, in Grundy Center, Iowa, to Charles A. and Jenny (Freese) Biebesheimer. He attended Grundy Center schools and graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1933. He then attended the University of Iowa, where he graduated from the College of Dentistry in 1940. He briefly practiced dentistry in Sac City, Iowa, before returning to Iowa City to join the faculty of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. His time at the University was interrupted by his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, based in Oakland, San Pedro and Chicago where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant SG. After his discharge he returned to Iowa City and rejoined the faculty.

On Memorial Day, 1942, Jerome married Lois Hook of Grundy Center. Together they raised their five children and celebrated 57 years of marriage. He took great pride in his children and their accomplishments, including that they all earned at least one degree from the University of Iowa.

In 1948 Jerome moved to Mason City and opened his general practice of dentistry. He practiced until his retirement in 1992. As a highly respected member of his profession he served on numerous dental and medical boards throughout his career.

Jerome was an avid golfer and bird hunter. He was a long-time member and past president of the Mason City Country Club. In June 1959 he shot the course record for the back nine, which has yet to be beaten. He shot his age on the course at least once every year from his 70th year through his 89th. He was also known as an excellent wingshot and dog trainer. He made numerous hunting trips for waterfowl in Saskatchewan, pheasants in South Dakota, quail in Missouri and Kansas, and grouse in Wisconsin, as well as hunting across Iowa for gamebirds including wild turkey. He also enjoyed over 50 continuous years of travel to Pine River, Minnesota, for hunting ruffed grouse. He was happy to have been out on opening day of the pheasant season this fall.

Jerome was active in the community, serving three terms on the Mason City School Board. He was a member and past president of the Mason City Lions Club, was an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church and served three times on its Session, and was on the staff of Mercy Hospital.

He is survived by his children, Johanna Nichols, Berkeley, California; Jerome Jr. (Arlene), Jonesboro, Arkansas; Gretchen King, Mason City; Christina Biebesheimer, Arlington, Virginia; and Charles (Lisa), Clear Lake. He is also survived by his grandchildren Anastasia Seaman and fiance Brian Cooley, Mason City; Genevieve King, Huntington Beach, California; Michael Biebesheimer, Fayetteville, Arkansas; and Lea and Ellie Biebesheimer, Clear Lake; as well as a great grandson, Kevin Seaman of Mason City. He is also survived by his special friend, Jean Ann Cahalan, Mason City. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Eloise Rorem, and wife Lois.
