On this 8th day of February, A.d. 1883, personally appeared before me, Clerk of the District Court, a court of record within and for the county and State aforesaid, Danl. McLaughlin, aged 52 years, resident of the State of Iowa, county of Cerro Gordo, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Danl. McLaughlin, who enrolled on the 20th of February, 1862, in Company C of the 17th regiment of Wisconsin Infantry commanded by Capt. Lawoll and was honorably discharged at Corinth, Miss on the 10th day of December, 1862; that his personal description is as follows: Age, 52 years; height, 5 feet 10 inches; complexion, light; hair, brown, eyes, blue. That while a member of the organizastion aforesaid, in the service and in the line of his duty at Corinth, in the State of Miss., on or about the 7th day of April, 1862, he has from exposure to rain and inclement weather prostrated by an attack of pluero pnuemonia; the occupation of applicant "wagoner" compelled him to be on duty night and day on the trip from Pittsburg Landing to Corinth - exposed to rain and fatigue. That he ws treated in hospitals as follows: At regmintal Hospital at Corinth; at Columbius, KY., Hospital on the Mississippi River floating - For ... about Nov. 25th, 1862; At St. Louis at Sister's Hospital, from Nov. 25th, until discharged Dec. 10, 1862. That he has not been employed in the military or naval service otherwise than as stated above. That since leaving the service this applicant has resided in the Co. of Cerro Gordo, in the State of Iowa and in Fond du Lac, State of Wis. and his occupation has been that of a merchant and farmer. That prior to his entry in to the service above named he was a man of good physical health, being when enrolled a laborer. That he is now forty, disabled from obtaining his subsistence by ....

Patrick McMonagle, being duly sworn says that he is a resident of Fond du Lac City, Fond du Lac County, State of Wis. and has so resided for over 28 years in said county and his age is 43 years; that his post office address if Fond du Lac City, Fond du Lac County, State of Wis. That he is well acquainted with Daniel McLaughlin who is an applicant for .... invalid pension under ..... No. 472.694 and has been so acquainted for about 24 years. And before his entry to army said Daniel McLaughlin was to all appearances a sound man and free from lung disease. That deponent saw said Daniel McLaughlin mostly after his release from the army and that he even then was suffering from lung disease and continued to suffer ..... until he removal from Wisconsin .... final years of 1870s. That in the opinion of this deponent owing to said lung disease said Daniel McLaughlin from the time of his release from the U.S. service until his removal from Wisconsin as aforesaid, able to do more than half the work of an ordinary able-bodied man. That .... ......... mentioned deponent lived about seven miles from said McLaughlin and saw him at an average of Once a week during said time and he and McLaughlin frequently ...... together on deponent's farm. That said McLaughlin is a brother-in-law of this deponent and he has no interest in any claim for pension which said McLaughlin may have against the U.S. Govt. signed: Patrick McMonagle.

I have the honor to return herewith your request for a report of hospital treatment in Claim No. 472,694, with such information as is furnished by the records filed in this Office, viz. that Pvt. Daniel McLaughlin, Co. C, 17th Wis. Vols. entered G.H. New House of Refuge, St. Louis, Mo. Oct 3rd, 1862 with tuberculosis and was discharged from service Dec. 10th, 1862. There are no records of the Regimenht on file prior to May 19, 1863, of the Floating Hospital at Columbus, KY, bearing on this case, nor of the Sisters of Charity Hospital, St. Louis, MO, subsequent to Aug. 2nd, 1862. signed: B.F. This is to testify that I have known Daniel McLaughlin from boyhood until the year 1858 and that he did work for me several years at the Iron Furnace and that he was at all times considered an able-bodied man while he worked for me and always considered to be a very healthy man never complained of any disease until I met him after he came home from the U.S. Service he was complaining then of lung disease. I have been called to go see him when it was thought by me and all present that he could not live one hour. I consider him a broken down man and from all I know of him he contracted his disease or diseases in the U.S. Service. I further say that I am not interested in any manner in this matter further than when called upon to make a true statement. signed: D. Dougherty Subscribed and Sworn to by D. I Daniel McLaughlin on my oath do depose and say: that reason why I cannot furnish the medical testimony prior to my enlistment is I never was sick and I further swear that since my discharge and up to the year 1875 the physician that doctored me is dead (Dr. Smith) and I further swear that the afficavit file in your office dated Sept. 1st, 1883 should read "the physician that doctored me since my discharge and up to the year 1875 is dead" and I further sear the reason I didn't appear before Dr. McDowell of Clear Lake as ordered March 17, 1883 is the order did not reach me. signed: Danial Mc Laughlin.

On this 16th day of June, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and eighty four personally appeared before me, a clerik of the Dist. Court, within and for the county and State aforesaid, DM. McLaughlin, aged 56 years, a resident of the Twp. of Dougherty, county of Cerro Gordo, State of Iowa, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is a pensioner of the United States, enrolled at the Marble Rock Pension Angency at the rate of six dollars per month, by reason of disability from Chyronic disease of Lungs; incurred in the military service of the United States while acting as a soldier in the War of the Rebellion, Private, 1st Wisconsin Volunteers Co. That he believes himself to be entitled to an increase of pension on account of Rheumetism and total disability on acct. of Bleeding of lungs.The Rheumatism ....was occasuibed bt exposure at and after the Battle of Pitts. Landing and before and during the Battle of Corinth. Add to Hemoraghe of the lungs ...in an account of the general disability contracted by the applicant while acting as a teamster in said Co. and Regiment.

Frank Murray being duly sworn says that he is a resident of the town of Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac co., Wis.; that his post office address is Van Dyne P.O. Fond du Lac Co., Wis. That he was once a member of Co. C 17th Wis. Inft. Vols. and was well acquainted with Daniel McLaughlin who was a member of said Co. and regiment. That while a member of the organizastion aforesaid in the service and line of this duty near Pittsburg Landing, Tenn., in April 1862, said Daniel McLaughlin contracted a severe cold owing to exposure to .... cold and his lungs nbecame affected and he was shortly there after discharged on account of said lung disease. That deponent has no interest in any claim for pension which said McLaughlin may have against the U.S. Govt. signed: Frank Murray.

In the matter of the claim for Increase of Pension of Daniel McLaughlin, Private, Co. C., 17th Wis. Vols. On this 6th of March A.D. 1886 personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and for the aforesaid County duly authorized to adminster oaths, Roger Connaughton (age 45 years, a resident of \f1\fs18 Dougherty twp) and Charles Gallagher (age 45 years, a resident of Dougherty twp,, in the County of Cerro gordo and State of Iowa. Nicholas Cunningham (aged 45 years, a resident of Scott twp) and Pat Helfery (age 33 years, a resident of Dougherty twp, Cerro Gordo Co. whose Post office is Cold Water, Franklin Co, Iowa. We have known Daniel McLaughlin and lived neighbor to him for the past seven years and would consider him totally disabled from doing any manual labor by reason of the desease of lungs. We would consider his disability greater than it would be if he had lost an arm or a leg.

Joseph Keenan being duly sworn says that he is the Pastor of St. Patrick's Church in the City of Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac County, State of Wis., and as such pastor he is the cusodian of the church records of said church. That the following is a true copy of such church records as to the baptism of William McLaughlin. Nov. 111th, 1876 I have baptised William the legitimate child of Daniel and Julia McLaughlin. Rev. Jos. J. Keenan being duly sworn says that he is the Pastor of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Fond du Lac City, Wis. That as such pastor he is the custodian of the records of said church. That he has carefully examined said records and that there is no record of the birth of Anthony McLaughlin. He also finds no record of the marriage of Daniel McLaughlin to Julia McMonagle- that the records of said church from Oct. 4th, 1863 until May 11, 1853, in relation to marriages have been lost or desroyed. That the records of baptisms from about the year 1870 until the year 1881 of said church are very incomplete and many ommissions have been made therein. Patrick McMonagle, Mary McMonagle (maiden name Campion) of the town of Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac Co., Wis., being duly sworn say that their post office address is Fond du Lac City, Wis. That they were well acquainted with Daniel McLaughlin, late of Co. C 17th Wis. Inft. Vols., now deceased. That said Daniel mcLaughlin was married to Julia McMonagle on Nov. 15, 1863, at St. Patrick's Church, Fond du Lac City, Wis., by the Rev. James Colton, the then pastor of said church. That deponents were present at said marriage. That said Rev. james Colton is abraod. Catharine McMonagle (formerly Hickey), and Mary Hickey being duly sworn say that they are residents of Fond du Lac County, Wis., that their Post Office Address is Fond du Lac City, Fond du Lac County, Wis. That they were well acquainted with Daniel McLaughlin, late of Co. "C" 17th Wis. Inft., now deceased; and were well acquainted with his widow, Julia Mclaughlin; that the son of said Daniel McLaughlin and Julia McMonagle viz., Anthony McLaughlin, was born in the City of Fond du Lac, Wis., on the 15th day of August, 1873. That deponents were friends at the time of such birth. Charles Gallagher, Mary Hickey and Catharine McMonigal being each duly sworn on oath say that they and each of them are residents of Fond du Lac, State of Wisconsin and have resided there for the last twenty years and upward; that they aand each of them were presonally acquainted with Daniel Joseph McLaughlin, Anthony McLaughlin, and William McLaughlin, who are minor heirs at law of Daniel McLaughlin deceased, who died in Cerro Gordo co., Iowa. Deponents first .... - say that Daniel Joseph McLaughlin was born on the 12th day of September, A.D. 1871, at the City of Fond du Lac, County of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin; that said Anthony McLaughlin was born on the 15th day of August A.D. 1873 in the City of Fond du Lac County of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; and that said William McLaughlin was born on the 11th day of November, A.D. 1876, in the City of Fond du lac, State of Wisconsin. Deponents further say they were near neighbors to the said Daniel Joseph, Anthony and William McLaughlin and remember definitely the birth of each and the date of their respective births.

That he is the only legal guardian of James, Daniel Joseph, Anthony, and William Mclaughlin, legitimate children of Daniel McLaughlin, who enlisted under the name of Daniel Mclaughlin at Fond du Lac, Wis., on the ...... day of ....... A.D. 1862. He enlisted in Co. "C: 17 Regt. Wis. Volunteers in the War of the Rebellion, who died Nov 6th, 1886 in Dougherty twp, Cerro Gordo co., State of Iowa, from desease contracted in seige of Corinth in 1862.... who bore at the time of his death the rank of Private in the service general that he left his widow surviving whose name was Julia mcLaughlin and who died March 11, 1889, in Dougherty twp, Corro Gordo Co., Iowa. that the above-named are the only surviving legitimate children of said Daniel McLaughlin who were under sixteen years of age at the time of his death, of whom there was another son who was a man doing for himself when his father died, whose name was John McLaughlin, and who died April 11, 1889 in Dougherty twp. of said county. John McLaughlin, of soldier by Julia McLaughlin, born Sept. 11, 1865. James McLaughlin, of soldier by Julia McLaughlin, born Dec. 15, 1869. Daniel J. McLaughlin, of soldier by Julia McLaughlin, born Sept. 12, 1871. Anthony McLaughlin, of soldier by Julia McLaughlin, born Aug. 15, 1873 William McLaughlin, of soldier by Julia McLaughlin, born Nov. 11, 1876. That the father was married under the name of Daniel McLaughlin to Julia McMonagle, there being no legal barrier to such marriage; that the said children have not aided or abetted the rebellion; and that an application the same as this is on file in Pension Office but date cannot be determined. signed: Charles Gallagher.
