Private James M. Gallagher was born January 16, 1891, the son of Manus and Catharine (Treston) Gallagher. During World War I, Pvt. Gallagher enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with Company D. 168th Infantry.

Pvt. Gallagher was killed in action on July 28, 1918 at Chateau-Thierry, France. He was interred at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Rockwell, Iowa.
