Roy B. MARTIN, Jr., son of Mrs. Cecil MARTIN, who has enlisted in the naval reserves, went Monday to Des Moines. He does not know to what station he will be assigned.

Roy Martin Attains Staff Sergeant Rank

CLEAR LAKE - Roy MARTIN, son of Mrs. Cecil MARTIN, 400 North Fourth street, has been promoted to the rank of staff sergeant, it was learned Thursday. He was graduated from glider school, Lockhorn Field, Columbus, Ohio, Tuesday evening and received his promotion and glider wings at the ceremonies. Sergeant MARTIN has been in the service since February, being sent first to Grand Forks, N. Dak., and then to Jefferson Barracks, Mo., before entering glider school.

COMMISSIONED FLIGHT OFFICER

Roy B. MARTIN, son of Mrs. Cecil MARTIN of Clear Lake, was commissioned a flight officer after taking glider pilot training at Statigart, Ark. He entered the service March, 1942, proir to which he was employed by the People's Gas and Electric company.

Flight Officer Roy B. MARTIN, Jr. returned to his station at the army air base at Sedalia, Mo., Sunday after spending a couple of days with his mother, Mrs. Cecil MARTIN and other relatives.

Mrs. Cecil P. Martin Gets Message From War Department

Clear Lake - Mrs. Cecil PALMETER MARTIN, 400 N. 4th street, received a message from the war department Wednesday afternoon stating that her son, F. O. Roy B. MARTIN, Jr., is missing in action over Holland since Sept. 18. Flight Officer MARTIN was a glider pilot and went into Holland with an airborne division. Mrs. MARTIN last heard from her son in August while he was still in England.

MARTIN entered the service in March, 1942, and was trained at Grand Forks, N. Dak., and Jefferson Barracks, Mo., before entering glider school at Lockhorn Field, Columbus, Ohio, where he was graduated in September, 1942, with the rank of S/Sgt.

He completed glider pilot training at Stuttgart, Ark., in January, 1943, receiving a commission as flight officer. He was then transferred to the Sedalia army air base at Warrensburg, Mo., for further training. Later he was at Bowman field, Louisville, Ky., and Camp McCall, N. Car., before going overseas.

MARTIN has 2 brothers in the service, Charles "Buck" MARTIN is an ambulance driver overseas and William is in the air forces.

His father, Roy B. MARTIN, Sr., formerly of Mason City, is with the OPA [Office of Price Administration, food rationing division] in Chicago. MARTIN was employed by the People's Gas and Electric company, Mason City, before entering the service.

PRISONER OF WAR

Mrs. Cecil PALMETER MARTIN, 400 N. 4th street, Clear Lake, received a message from the war department Friday morning stating that her son, Flight Officer Roy B. MARTIN, missing in action over Holland since Sept. 18, is a prisoner of war. The message stated that particulars would follow. The whereabouts of F. O. MARTIN were ascertained by the International Red Cross, it was stated.

Local Flyers in Camp Now Liberated

Three airmen from this community are known to have been prisoners of war in the large prison camp for American flyers at Barth, which according to a Russian communique Thursday, has been liberated by the Russians.

The airmen are Lt. Donald G. HARRER, son of Mr. and Mrs. George HARRER, 1160 Maple drive, whose wife, Betty HAKES HARRER, and son Tonny live with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. P. LOOMIS, at 320 1st S. E.; Lt. Melvin J. SPENCER, son of Mr. and Mrs. K. W. SPENCER, 1222 President N. W.; and Flight Officer Roy B. MARTIN, son of Mrs. Cecil PALMETER MARTIN, Clear Lake.

Lt. HARRER and Lt. SPENCER have been prisoners of the Germans since Feb., 1944, and F/O MARTIN since last September.
