Wind turbines going up south of Mason City
by John Skipper

MASON CITY — Six wind turbines, almost 450 feet in height, are being constructed near Mason City — and more turbines are in the works.

Mason Wind LLC of Norwalk is putting in four of them south of the Avenue of the Saints. Two others are planned east of Portland, according to Cerro Gordo County Administrative Officer Tom Drzycimski.

He said the turbines will be 445 feet high from the bottom of the base to the apex of the highest blade.

Drzycimski said Optimum Renewables of Des Moines submitted applications for special use permits on behalf of Mason Wind LLC that were approved by the county’s Board of Adjustment in February 2014.

Drzycimski said Optimum Renewables submitted a special use permit application for four more turbines near the intersection of 220th Street and Nettle Avenue.

The Board of Adjustment will consider the request at a public hearing at 4 p.m. Feb. 23.
