Originally the building was a Lutheran Church. It was acquired by the First Church of Christian Scientists, which was first organized as a Christian Science Society on September 26, 1907. They incorporated under the laws of Iowa in 1924.

The church building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 30th of 1997.
