About the American Protective League
The APL was a nationwide citizen volunteer organization established March 22, 1917, that operated with approval from and under the direction of the U.S. Deptartment of Justice, Bureau of Investigation (known today as the FBI) during WWI to provide information concerning disloyal persons, conduct investigations for other federal agencies, and assist with locating delinquents under the Selective Service Act.
