The 87th anniversary of the Organizaversay of the Old Settlers Association of Cedar County Iowa was held June 9th 1923. Since June 10th the anniversary date happened to fall on Sunday. The 52 meeting of the association was called to order in the Court House at 11 oclock by President D R Smith. A committee consisting of Judge John T Moffit and M H Miller was named to recommend officers and an Executive Committee of the following year. Then followed adjournment until 2 oclock in the afternoon. Three musical numbers listed in the program for the afternoon session were omitted because talent had not been provided by the committee. Rev W E Van Buren offered prayer after which followed the Secretarys readings of the minutes of the previous meeting. J W Reeder Treasurer of the association reported that funds on hand amounted $18.37. The nominating committee recommended the following names for officers and Executive Committee for the next year. President Peter McKee, Vice President Chares Swatzlander, Secretary J L Sheldon, Treasurer J W Reeder. Executive Committee M H Miller, Chas Swatzlander, George E Beatty, T H Spear, H W Franco. After unanimous election of officers the President Elect was inducted to the office. A gold headed cane the Secretary F L Sheldon read obituaries of 55 Old Settlers who had passed since the last meeting. This number is 9 less than the number read at the 1922 meeting. Since there were sufficient funds in the treasury to pay expenses no collection was taken today.

Rev M Grether Pastor of the Tipton Reformed church delivered an interesting address paying tribute to the early pioneers of the county who had laid the foundation for one of the best communities in the State. Albert M Sheldon a former citizen of the County now residing in Oklahoma gave a brisk talk by invitation. Mr John T Moffit called the Roll of Old Settlers present from 1841 to 1856.

3. John Spear was born in Ireland May 1st 1839. Came to Cedar Co Iowa in 1855. Married Miss Susan Smith Feb 14th 1862 who died in the year 1896. Married Miss Sarah Louise Sissler March 22nd 1900. Died at his home at Stanwood Iowa June 30th 1923 aged 84 yrs 1 mo 2da.
