TIPTON. Population, 2,048. The county seat of Cedar county, is an incorporated city located on the C., R. I. & P. and the C. & N. W. Rys. (depots mile apart), 25 miles n. of Muscatine, 52 w. of Clinton and 182 e. of Des Moines The town is solidly built, lighted by electricity, has an excellent system of water works, an armory hall, 2 weekly newspapers, 3 banks, Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Reformed and Presbyterian churches and a public library. It was settled in 1850 and incorporated in 1857. Shipments are grain, live stock, butter, eggs and produce. Exp., Am. and U. S. Tel, W. U.; Harry R. McNamara, post master.
