Massillon Joins The Crowd

MASSILLON, a “suburb” of Lowden, just four miles north, also helped promote the nation's 200th birthday celebration. Volunteers built the below ferry float which also appeared in various parades, including the Iowa State Fair Parade in Des Moines. It received several awards. The float was a replica of the Denson's Ferry which was said to have been used to cross the Wapsipinicon River at the site of Massillon, 1837-1857. The Massillon area residents ended the summer's bicentennial activities with a gala parade and program in the Massillon Cedar County Conservation park on Sunday, August 8, 1976.

Picture of Massillon Ferry Float
The above picture was taken at the Solon, Iowa Beef Days parade in late July, 1976. Participating that day were Margaret Sailor, John & Mary Lou Skinner, Myron Schneider, Lyle Raiber, Bill and Barb Ihns, Marvin (Charlie) Bright, and Harry Skinner. Lloyd and Alice Hamdorf furnished the transportation.
