GIRL SCOUTS

The Stanwood Girl Scouts were organized in 1965, as part of the Cardinal Council. The purpose of the organization is to encourage constructive thinking, to promote service projects, and to enjoy recreational get-togethers.

The junior girls, Troop 62, were led by Sally Taylor and Pat Coppess. The following girls made up the membership roll: Anna Miller, Vicki Merfeld, Christine Peterman, Candy Smith, Cynthia Licht, Kandi Meyer, Belinda Yock, Brenda Licht, Kim Kautz, Karen Syring, Debby Kelley, Tracey Peterman, Donna Flockhart, Patty Brommell, Dawn Coppess, Melinda Taylor, Joan Paulsen, Kathy Spear, Monica Billick, June Bails, and Vicki Conant.

The first leaders of the Brownies, Troop 64, were Lucille Shultz, and Doris Kelley. The troop consisted of Lori Kleppe, Cindy Brommell, Debbie Wagner, Terri Kleppe, Kristin Speer, Mary Kay Shultz, De Ann Tenley, Debby Meyer, and Debby Conant.

In addition to working for their badges, the girls have participated in a wide variety of activities: Swimming and skating parties, a paper drive, a clean-up at the park, helping to buy drapes for the Memorial building, a father-daughter banquet, over-night campout, and annual cookie sales.

BOY SCOUTS

Scouting history in Stanwood began as early as 1912. The Methodist church history states that the Rev. J. J. Bouder had a Boy Scout troop from 1912 to 1915.

Harry Christy, Stanwood superintendent of school, became scoutmaster in 1915 and continued until he was called to service during World War I. William Ropa revived the scouting program again in 1928. Some might remember Jim Klahn, Vincent Grueber and Cyril Olson, scouts at that time. Bill served as scoutmaster for five years. The Rev. Delhooke, Methodist pastor, was assisted by Cyril Olson in 1933 and 1934. Some of the scouts of this era were Paul Hegarty, Bill Rhoads, Seward Mackey, Cecil and Ronnie Spear, Bill and Ed Barnes and Jim Klahn.

Bill Hansen was scoutmaster in about 1942 and had between 14 and 21 scouts. The group was sponsored by the Commercial Club. Art Ropa, Lud Meyer and Glenn Ridenour were committeemen at the time.

Woodrow Stock took over for two years in 1944. His unit’s sponsor was the American Legion. In the program during this time were Gordon Licht, Ken Koch, Ken Boyle, Bob Flockhart and Dale Coppess.

For the next ten years scouting did not exist in Stanwood. In 1956, some Legion members laid the ground work for getting Cub Scouts for their sons. The group has since continued to sponsor the organization. Boy Scouts began again in 1957 with Richard Herlein, Adair Spear and Dale Wood serving as scoutmasters.

The first Cub Scout charter was received October 31, 1956. Dale Wood was cubmaster of the 18 charter members. Mrs. Wood and Velma Seitz were the first den mothers. In January of 1957 the pack was divided into three dens with Mrs. Glenn Thumma, Mrs. Cecil Spear, Mrs. Vonee Proesch and Mrs. Betty Britcher serving as den mothers. Mrs. Jim Tenley soon replaced Mrs. Britcher who moved from the community.

More recent den mothers include Mrs. Ed Speer, Mrs. Barnell Rowald, Mrs. Darrell Worby, Mrs. Paul Hegarty, Mrs. Milford Pruess and Mrs. Willard Eiler. During these years Wayne Syring was cubmaster.

Cub scout leaders to date are John Rouse, scoutmaster; den mothers, Mrs. Kenneth Koch and Mrs. Kenneth Meyer; and assistants, Mrs. Leland Wagner and Mrs. Gordon Licht. There are 15 registered Cub Scouts.

The boy scouting program was started again in 1964 with Marvin Rohwedder as scoutmaster. His assistant was Jim Moneypenny. Klaus Knoop and Gene Brown also served as leaders. Dr. E. W. Speer became scoutmaster in January of 1968. He now has 12 registered Boy Scouts.
