FREMONT LODGE
NO. 616, AF & AM
On September 1, 1915, the Grand Lodge of Iowa of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons with Frank S. Moes, Grand Master, and Newton R. Parvin, Grand Secretary, did create a lodge of Masons, subordinate to the Grand Lodge, under the name of Fremont Lodge No. 616 in the town of Stanwood. The name Fremont was chosen because the lodge is in Fremont township. The following officers were elected: A. W. Jackson, W.M.; E. W. Gardner, S.W.; W. C. Jackson, J. W.
Other charger members were Dan Saxon, K. P. Wilkins, Wm. Girard, C. J. Long, W. D. Hart, John Grant, C. W. Norris, A. E. Thomson, W. C. Tilden, Charles Rigby, F. J. McClellan, E. A. Olin and George Findlay. There was considerable discussion concerning the possibility of a limited membership of around forty members, as the jurisdiction of the lodge was limited in all directions. Much to the amazement of the Grand Lodge, membership exceeded the assigned as a potential in the first year and a half. In a few years the membership had edged up to near the hundred mark.
The corner lot north of the Stanwood Lumber Company was the property of the local Masons, but it has been sold. The Masons maintain quarters in the second floor of the lumber yard building.
