Through Senator Martin I have learned of Lowden’s 100th anniversary and I am glad to send greetings to your fellow citizens joined in the celebration of this important event. During the past century you have seen many outward changes in your community, but the Lowden spirit of enterprise and cooperation remains the same. Strengthened by this spirit, you can enter your second century with confidence.

OUR 100TH BIRTHDAY

The Lowden Centennial committee was organized early this year for the purpose of promoting the one-hundredth anniversary of the town. A central committee was selected and they in turn appointed various chairmen and committees. Since February 15, 1957, men of the community have laid aside their shaving equipment and have allowed their beards to grow. The purpose is to get into the spirit of 100 years ago and to build up Centennial sentiment. A Beaver club has been organized and more than 250 men have joined.

Companions to the Beavers are the Centennial Belles. Many women of the community are already being seen in their centennial outfits which are costumes they have either resurrected from attics and old trunks belonging to their pioneer ancestors or made their own in styles of early days, including the sunbonnets.

Many planters and flower beds are showing beautiful petunias, Lowden’s centennial flower, which is one of the many efforts being put forth to make this celebration a grand affair in every way. The city of Lowden extends a hearty welcome to everyone who comes to share this birthday celebration with us.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT

We wish to thank all the kind people who have contributed their help to the task of composing this booklet. Special gratitude goes to those loaning us Cedar County history books, to “the Lowden News” for their cooperation, to Mrs. Ethel Murphy of Clinton and P. H. Schneider of Massillon for their helpful material, and to the many people who so willingly contributed information and pictures when requested to do so. Due to limited space we regret that only a part of the material collected could be incorporated into this book. We will give due consideration to all errors and omissions and make proper acknowledgments in the Bicentennial history in 2057.

CENTENNIAL DAYS
page 164

From the barren prairie where the remain dwelt
And from the settlers’ sweat and tears.
Has come this town we love so well
And the heritage of the years.

A century’s labor and progress undreamed
By those who came before
Has caused us this day to recall and relive
The adventurous days of yore.

A hundred years are but a day
In the sight of the Lord, it seems,
But the passing century on this spot
Has witnessed the changing scenes.

We feel that they who lived here then
Are smiling and looking down
And recalling the way of life they knew
As we honor our little town.
