Wednesday Literary Club

On September 19, 1984, the Wednesday Literary Club began its eighty-eighth year of study.

Several WLC ladies hold long-time memberships: Murl Elijah, 70 years; Irma Kelly, 64 years; Alma Kirkpatrick, 63 years and Anita Decker, 48 years.

Activities: WLC started the Clarence Library and regularly contribute books to it. A special book is given in memory of a deceased member. We have 100% participation in the reading program. An art award is given to a Clarence-Lowden Junior High school student. We entertain the Golden Ages each year with a potluck dinner and program. A tea is held for the Clarence-Lowden junior class girls each year. We joined in hosting county conventions. A tree was planted at the Community park for Arbor Day.

Programs have featured travelogs to many places and counties including India, China and Japan. A favorite program is the every member “5 minute” book review. Special days were visits to Kalona, Hoover Library, the Old Capitol at Iowa City and Brucemore. New, timely and difficult words were studied for “vocabulary” work. The current study is “Focus on Iowa”.
