This Circle was organized in 1921 in a particular neighborhood to enable these ladies to do social service work as a group of ladies on behalf of St. John’s Church. They met in members’ homes until the new church was dedicated in 1972. Quilts and much clothing were sewn and sent to Children’s Homes supported by the larger Church. In addition, early in the life of this organization, when it was still possible to send canned goods to the Emmaus Homes in Missouri and to the Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown. Because of new regulations food stuffs are no longer sent so the thrust of their projects has been quilting and the monies from the quilt work are disbursed to the various Youth Homes of the United Church of Christ. However, some sewing is still done for the Nursing Home and for County Health Service. The organization felt that the Church and its work should be represented in the Quasquicentennial parade so we entered a float. Our theme of the various facets of our Circle’s work served us well and this float received first place in originality. Mrs. Emma Kammeyer is our only Charter Members, but we also have four Fifty Year Members in our organization.
