Zybell Memorial Library

The Clarence Library was organized by the Wednesday Literary Club and opened July 5, 1940. The town council assumed control on June 12, 1941 and levied a ¼ mil tax for support.

In the fall of 1951, Edna Zybell died and left her home to the city to be used as a library. This structure was remodeled and books were moved from the two jail cells that had been previously been used as a library to the new location. It became known as the Edna Zybell Memorial Library. Open house was held Sept. 1, 1951.

In 1975 the library was expanded from two rooms to the entire second floor.

The Library is a member of Cedar County Library Association and East Central Library Association. The library is supported by city and county taxes.

The 1984 library collection includes 7,200 hard bound volumes. Other services offered to the community are cassettes, records, microfilm reader and a movie projector for loan. Films may be ordered from the State Library through the library. The library is also a member of the Interlibrary Loan Service which enables patrons to borrow books from other libraries which the local library may not have.

Wanda McIntosh is librarian and Eleanor Stonerook is assistant librarian. Board members are: Eloise Kline, Mary Droll, Virginia Robinson, Marvin Schilling and Lavern Kintzel.
