Robinson Heritage Farm

William T. Robinson, and wife Anna came to Cedar County in 854, purchasing 160 acres of land near Clarence, Iowa. The tract of land was wild and unimproved, but William broke sod, planted crops in the fields, built a small house and a good barn, and set out a grove of trees. He and Anna lived on this farm until his death June 28, 1902 at the age of 82 years.

William E. Robinson , William T.’s son, took over the farming operation upon his father’s death. He died on the farm June 29, 1918 at the age of 64 years.

Arthur Robinson , William E.’s son, continued to farm this land. In 1920, Art married Bess Kalous and in 1928 built a new home which is the house we continue to live in. He died July 5, 1972 at the age of 80 years.

Wayne Robinson , Arthur’s son, farmed the land upon his father’s retirement, and continued the farming operation until his death October 23, 1972 at the age of 50 years.

Ronald Robinson , Wayne’s son, then took over the farm after his father’s death and continues to farm the land today.

Heath Robinson , Ron’s son, has recently moved back to Clarence, and who knows….Maybe he will someday farm the land of his ancestors.

It is interesting to note that no one other than a Robinson has ever farmed or lived on this land. It has never even been rented to anyone else.

Rural Schoolhouses

At one time rural schoolhouses were placed throughout the country at spaces of about every two miles. The schools were kept close together as the majority of the students walked to school, no matter what the weather. These schools were usually built on a corner of an intersection with the farmer selling the land to the county school system for $1 with a clause that if the school closed or disbanded he would receive his land back. The average building was 26’ x 34’ with many schools being built between 1833 and 1880 at a cost of $600. Due to the use of wood burners many times the schools burnt down and needed to be rebuilt. The school at Onion Grove, between Quincy and Rose Avenues on Oxford Junction Road, was destroyed by a tornado on May 18, 1898 and the students were sent to Dayton #3, section 3 of Dayton township on 110th Street. Four rural schools immediately closed when consolidation was approved in Clarence in 1920. Others followed through the years, with the rural district choosing which community school the students would attend.

As the rural schools closed, many were sold and found other uses, such as garages, granaries, and machine shops. Five schools were moved to Clarence to become homes. The first one moved to Clarence was White Cloud school from the intersection of 165th and Ocean. It became the home of Tom and Mabel Woods, at 403 Fifth St. On either side of Wenndt Realty at 107 Lombard and 117 Lombard are schoolhouses brought into town by John Dettmann and remodeled into homes. In 1935, Oak Hill School at 170th and Rose closed and in 1946 it was purchased by C.F.W. Kleppe and moved to Clarence at 408 Fifth Ave. for a home. Later in 1952, Henry Thies purchased the Hawthorne school at 200th and Rose and had it brought to Clarence , where it is still the family home. Several other schools were moved to town with the intention of being remodeled but were then found to be of inferior quality and were torn down. School buildings were moved to town to be used while the new school was being built in 1934.
