CELEBRATING THE JOURNEY

The Clarence Sesquicentennial Committees have had a busy and exciting time “celebrating the journey” in preparation of Clarence’s 150th anniversary. On October 12, 2008 the American Legion was alive with polka bands, decorated pumpkins and the smell of brats and German potato salad. A bountiful “Harvest Basket” was filled with items donated from our local community members for a raffle, so much so that we were able to have TWO raffles. The Oktoberfest was a very successful kickoff event to start “The Journey”.

Committees didn’t have much time to rest though. An “Old Fashion Sesqui Christmas” was held on December 6, 2008 with a soup supper, a visit from Santa and a beautifully displayed old-fashioned Christmas from the past. We discovered haw many good bakers there were throughout the community as they donated homemade cookies, candy and other goodies for the cookie exchange. Our Christmas “raffle basket” was again filled with all the makings, donated by the community, for a perfect Christmas dinner.

Our next fundraising event was a breakfast held at the North Cedar Middle School on February 8, 2009. Pancakes, sausage, French toast, eggs, and biscuits-n-gravy—no one went away hungry. What a great place to enjoy breakfast looking out the beautiful expanse of windows and dining in the “round.” The raffle for this event was a “Sweetheart Basket” filled with all the delights of a perfect Valentine dinner including steak, lobster and an overnight stay at a casino.

Soon plans were underway for the St. Patrick’s Day corn beef and cabbage dinner which was held at the American Legion. Citizens of Clarence were once again generous in their donations. Residents of Clarence again responded with donations of meat, potatoes and cabbage—tables were full!! With a little luck of the Irish the “Pot-o-Gold” raffle was a big hit.

It seems as though all we had to do was ask and the community came together to support our endeavors. People of all ages are to be credited in making the 150th a success. North Cedar students helped serve at all of the fundraising events—helping to serve, set up and take down at the various functions. Community members donated food, contributed financially and gave of their time and talents. What a great community we have and what a great way to celebrate the journey.

We hope that you have enjoyed reading this Sesquicentennial History Book. We have tried to give a snapshot of the life and times of the citizens of Clarence as we emerged from an independent small village on the banks of Mill Creek to the community of today that is interwoven with the life of the county, state, country, and even the world. If we have omitted things that you feel are important, we apologize. We realize that a different group of people could begin writing another history book tomorrow resulting in another interesting book with different information. Please make this book your own. Scribble your memories in the margins and tape articles and pictures in it, so that your book reflects your view of our town’s time and place in history.      ~      The Committee
