WILLIAM MASTELLER was born in Mahaska County, Iowa, on August 3, 1856. He attended Oskaloosa College in Mahaska County and in 1880 moved to Cass County, where he bought a farm in Brighton Township. He returned to Mahaska County in 1882 and married Mary Caroline Miller there, then the couple returned to Brighton Township and raised their children, Carrie and Dorothy.
