Elisabeth
Ziegenfuss was born on April 12, 1845 at Silberhausen, Thuringia in
the Kingdom of Prussia. She was the daughter of Johan Heinrich
Ziegenfuss (born March 27, 1816) and Elenora Sander Ziegenfuss (b.
August 18, 1818). The family had long history in Silberhausen, and
other areas in Central Germany, working as farmers. “Ziegenfuss”
literally translates to “Goat’s foot.” Johan and
Elenora Ziegenfuss immigrated to the United States in 1856, and came
to settle at Hazel Green, Wisconsin. Other than Elizabeth they had
Mary Ann Heim, Magdalena Gebhart, Minne Bartel, and John Henry Ziegenfuss. Johan
Ziegenfuss died on March 3, 1891 at Breda, Iowa. Elenora Sander
Ziegenfuss died January 24th 1894 at Carroll, Iowa. Johan and Elenora are not interred together,
as each was buried in the Catholic cemetery in the city where they
had expired. |
