| The Carroll Times Carroll, Iowa 28 Feb 1918 Page 1 Carroll County Boys Departed On Tuesday Friends and Relatives of Men Gave Them a Great Ovation at Court House. Thousands At Train Great Throngs of Well-Wishers Lined the Streets and Crowded About the Depot Platform as the Boys Entrained for Camp Dodge, Tuesday. The citizens of Carroll county certainly did themselves proud by the manner in which they said farewell to the boys who left Tuesday morning for Camp Dodge. The program as arranged by the Citizens Club was carried out to the letter, and was a very appropriate and interesting one indeed. The registrants began assembling Monday morning, and by two o'clock that afternoon sixty of the men were in line to respond to roll call, which took place at the club rooms. E. A. Wissler informed the men that they were at liberty then until time for the banquet, which was held at the Burke Hotel at 7:30, and at which about seventy-three plates were served. After the banquet, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the participants, the men sought different forms of amusement, some attending the moving picture shows and some attending the smoker and reception held in their honor at the club rooms. Tuesday morning the men were assembled in front of the court house and a picture taken of the group, after which they repaired to the court room and were entertained with the following program: Address, "Duty Calls Me," by Father Joseph Roder. Song, by a mixed quartette. Address, "A Modern Knight," by Rev. R. Burton Sheppard. The Carroll Band was in evidence and enlivened the time whilst waiting for the arrival of the train after the program had been rendered, and placed the crowd in an excellent humor by rendering patriotic airs. About eleven o'clock the line of march was taken up to the depot, where the train was waiting, and upon their arrival at the station they immediately entrained. When the last man had boarded the train the signal was given to go ahead, leaving no time for the last fond farewell that so many coveted.
