C. S. Whitman, proprietor of the City Livery and Sale Stable, established his business in Carroll in 1874. He keeps in stock good driving horses, first class vehicles of all description, and good saddle horses. Horses are also bought and sold. Mr. Whitman is a native of Columbia County, New York, born September 28, 1822, son of Levi and Mary (Doty) Whitman. He resided in his native State until sixteen years of age. September 15, 1850, he was married to Miss Phoebe Woodward, in Warren County, New York, and in 1859 he removed to Dallas County, this State, where he lived about one year. He then resided four years at Des Moines, where he was engaged in blacksmithing, thence to Dallas County again, where he followed farming until 1874. At that time he came to Carroll and engaged in the livery business, where he has since continued. Mr. and Mrs. Whitman are the parents of four children—Anna, Charles, Frederick and Harry. Mr. Whitman is a member of the Masonic order, Lodge No. 264.~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
