LUMAN P. BRIGHAM *pages 612, 613*

Luman P. Brigham, notary public, and a member of the firm of Salinger & Brigham, loan and insurance agents of Manning, was born in Bradford County, Pennsylvania, the date of his birth being December 8, 1848. He is a son of George and Emma Brigham, his father being deceased and his mother still living at the old home in Pennsylvania. The subject of this sketch left his native State in 1861, and during the war of the Rebellion resided in Ohio. May 2, 1864, he enlisted in Company D, One Hundred and Thirty-sixth Ohio Infantry, with which he served eight months. He subsequently served in the One Hundred and Sixty-fourth Ohio Infantry, and was in the lines around Petersburgh during the closing scenes of the war. He is now a comrade of the Grand Army of the Republic, and is adjutant of the McPherson Post at Manning. Mr. Brigham was married at Indianapolis, Indiana, July 20, 1877, to Miss Celia McAllister, and they are the parents of three children—Helen, Jessamy and George. Mr. Brigham lived for a time at Arcola, in Douglass County, Illinois, and from there came to Carroll County, Iowa, and since 1882 has been a resident of Manning. He became associated with his present partner, Mr. Salinger, in 1883, and perhaps no firm engaged in the loan and insurance business in Carroll County have a business equaling in extent that of this popular, reliable agency. Dr. Brigham, as he is familiarly called by his friends, is a liberally educated man, a graduate of the State Normal School at Normal, Illinois, and for six years followed the teacher’s profession. He studied medicine and graduated in the medical profession from Hahnemann Medical College, of Chicago, Illinois, and for five years practiced medicine in Indiana and Iowa. Genial and courteous, and a man of strict integrity and honorable in all his dealings, he has gained a host of friends during his residence in Carroll County.
